Bringing up this topic because I was looking into the ULEZ camera situation in Britain, and of course reddit has the most inane and frankly uninspired takes on the matter.
A few excerpts.
So if you're a broke octogenarian living in Barnet, you probably don't like ULEZ.
Loving the fact that the only thing capable of rousing the citizenry of Greater London to direct action is a minor traffic charge intended to keep their air breathable.
Drivers are so fucking entitled. They ignore every road law and vandalise measures made to have them pay for the damage they cause to the environment around them.
It's embarrassing that the only thing people care about is their ability to pollute the air around them
(!) This user is pro-lung cancer
or in otherwords, tories feel they are above the law and commit acts of criminal damage costing the Taxpayer.
All the boomers suddenly care about poor people when they're prattling on about the ULEZ, but as soon as it comes to voting Tory it's fine to fuck over poor and disabled people.
All righty, so lets see who doesn't like ULEZ.
1: They're old, old people are icky and we don't like icky people!
2: They're poor, because hating the lower class is just so fashionable nowadays! Why don't poor people just buy nicer cars? Shaking my head...
3: They're entitled, neglecting that the word 'entitled' without the preface of 'believe they are', means they are in fact ENTITLED to the thing you say they are entitled to...
4: They vote the wrong way, in a democracy(tm) you have to vote CORRECTLY
5: They love pollution, Captain planet oh where are you?
Now these arguments might actually work on some people, why else would they be used? Peer pressure and shaming does get change.
But my question is 'for how long?', you cannot shame a people about the same crap forever, eventually people drive the oldest shittiest cars while proudly smiling and remarking "Yeah I'm old, poor, stupid, whatever, I like my car though".
I guess this blends into the endless polarization that we face daily, and there exists no such vitriolic stereotyping of pro-ULEZ people on the site.
