This video is kind of a long watch, but it gives plenty of examples as to why I'm thinking fan-subbing needs to come back, and what I mean by that is that true fan translating needs to come back instead of just stealing official subtitles, which are just as often victim to what passes for localization these days. You have no idea how much the stuff covered in this pisses me off. Or, as another example I know, how Dark Horse censored the original Ghost in the Shell manga by removing a more adult scene. A lot of people don't seem to share my thoughts on that, which I am really disappointed by as well, because it's not just a case of me being a perv and wanting to see the extra nudity, but just the fact that someone rather patronizingly decided that I as an adult didn't "need" to get that part of the product because they had decided the story didn't really "need" that part of it. The point is that I'm an adult, and I don't appreciate being censored on anything, let alone for such patronizing rationale.

Anyway, video:

Most people in the entertainment industry these days are narcissists, particularly here in America; everything they work on has to be about them and their opinions, and if it's not then they need to change it until is it.

Take it as ancedotal evidence, but I know someone writing a script in Hollywood who was asked outright "well, what if someone like Ben Shapiro likes this story?".

People need to understand, the twitter sphere is the media and tech industries in America at this time. And they believe this stuff to a T.

Fleet by Sandra McDonald.

A few generations ago, a solar CME fried all electronics. The rest of the world began rebuilding. Guam island, where our story takes place, was taken over by essentially a solarpunk/indigenous supremacy military junta, where only the military leadership enjoys any reinvented or rediscovered technology, any 'imperialist colonizers' who show up from the sea are either killed on sight or abducted so their brains can be forcibly downloaded into a computer for interrogation, the peasantry are regularly drafted/enslaved to mine raw materials from ancient landfills and brainwashed with hidden instructions and have ideologically suspect memories deleted via said brain-computer interface technology and our protagonist is transgender and employed as a regime commissar.

Game of Thrones's spinoff has officially gone woke.

A main character in House of the Dragon (Game of Thrones prequel) Corlys Velaryon has been cast with a black actor, despite the character in the books being explicitly described as being Valyrian (platinum/silver gold AKA blonde hair, white/pale skin, purple eyes).

Also, Mysaria, a minor character in the same show has been cast with an Asian actress despite the character being Valyrian as well.

House of the Dragon casts Corlys Velaryon, Rhaenys Targaryen and other key characters (winteriscoming.net)

But what do you expect from HBO's shitty ASOIAF fanfics?

"ABILITY OVER APPEARANCE! THEY ARE ACTORS! JUST PRETEND THEY ARE WHITE, SHITLORD!"
But the second a black character is placed by a white man, they screech like stabbed pigs.

Honestly, it's exactly what I expected.
Considering the disaster that was the final season of Game of Thrones, I'm betting that they're just trying to drum up some controversy, in order to get people to start talking about this new spinoff.

Dude, I already posted this in this thread. :p
It's the sort of thing that bears repeating though. So many people have no idea how corrupt the professional translation community has become; it's one of the many, many reasons I've begun to embrace piracy when it comes to Japanese media, because official western releases are almost always tainted by regressive leftist ideology in some way.

One thing I think is notable here is how they make one of the pro-Human factions somehow based on human defectors during the war. This doesn't make any sense, really - pro-Humans wouldn't trust or work with those who defected in the war, especially ones whose defection was strategically significant to the Empire's defeat. And defectors would be likely to be rewarded for bringing about the Empire's defeat by their alien rulers, and so have their standing depend on their favor, so they would be pretty unlikely to be the first to act against them?
Given that history's been rewritten, we've got no idea what the war was actually like. Might have had more parallels to the fall of the roman empire or Nixon selling out american manufacturing industry to china than outright conquest, with human traitors allying with the xenos since they were outside imperial politicking and their loyalty was therefore theoretically assured in a way that the loyalty of locals wouldn't be, transferring technologies and resources in exchange for cheap manufacturing and labor, etc, until the xenos had attained enough power relative to them that they'd outlived their usefulness.

Things I will do when I become Evil Empress said:
#16: If the Hero says he is willing to betray his cause and accept my offer of ruling the world at my side, he will only be believed once that betrayal results in his cause's total destruction, at which point his demonstration of total lack of principle should lead to his immediate execution.
I always think it'd be fun to play one of these setting as the faction painted as the "bad guy" that I know is intended to map to people like us. Always thought it'd be neat to play a Humanis Shadowrun game, for instance.
/tg/ had Witch Girl Threads part #1, #2 and #3 which were essentially taking Witch Girl Adventures but instead of the reality-bending sociopathic god-queens which were the canon protagonists, you play as members of an SCP Foundation expy dedicated to fighting them and/or the various secret agencies trying to weaponize them for various governmental, conspiratorial, corporate or some combination of the above ends. Also Cain's Ouroboros which was Abigail Soto's Bellum Maga (Roleplaying The Feminist Resistance) played from the point of view of the cultists of the Serpent.

Things that the Serpent has given us:
  • Recordkeeping.
  • Technology.
  • Any form of societal organization beyond 'do what the local witch warlord god-empress says or you'll be lucky if she merely kills you.'
  • Any form of religion beyond 'worship Gaia and whichever of her demigoddesses is the local warlord (or said local warlord will make a gruesome example of you)'.
Things that the Gaians have given us:
  • Anarcho-primitivism.
  • That cult which was secretly running south korea for a while (this was actually canon in the original).
  • Superpowers in the form of witchcraft, which requires sacrificial offerings as a power source and only works for witches who're loyal to Gaia (disloyalty being punished with loss of power) who've used the power it grants them relative to everyone else to rule as a self-appointed master race of living goddesses in the goa'uld style.
  • A succession war every generation since witchcraft isn't heritable, so the political map is constantly redrawing itself between the fiefdoms of new witch-warlords. Guess who gets drafted as the footsoldiers in said wars and/or used as raw materials for the armies of magically mutated monsters.
It just reminds me of some bullshit the director of Snowpiercer said about how his movie was essentially about how evil capitalism was, while apparently missing the fact nothing about his little world actually represented capitalism in any way. Nothing about the movie made any sense, really - it was just the usual class warfare bullshit. And I see that more recently they've made it into a TV series, too.
Meanwhile, I remember seeing some wokeist articles attempting to Cancel Bong Joon-ho for making an anti-migrant-crisis hate propaganda screed. After all, it wasn't like Wilford had to take anyone but his prepicked elite Front Cars inhabitants aboard when the planet started freezing, he only let the Back Car inhabitants freeload rather than just dying off because he could. And they repaid him by over-stressing the train's extremely finite onboard resources and industries, leading to their enslavement as low-tech substitutes for overtaxed irreplaceable machinery, revolving and getting humanity's last hope destroyed when the train got derailed by their irresponsible use of explosives in a sealed environment where everything was vital machinery during their revolt.

So Snowpiercer endorses communist revolution ... by portraying communism as literally destroying all of humanity. Massive self-own there.
