A spiritual emulation of the creative power of the Universe, which is what led to sexual rituals in many religions and to customs such as Temple Prostitution, basically performance art of Creation, if you will.

Aside from the physical pleasure of sex, there is a strong emotional component of closeness and connectedness that is associated with sex, at least in healthy relationships. This emotional connection helps bond husband and wife together and that relationship between man and wife forms the foundation of the family which in turn forms the foundation upon which society itself rests.

See I'd consider all that to be pleasure.

I'd put that under the emotional benefits. I mean, there is a significant difference between a one night stand and having deeply meaningful sex with a loving partner, and it's not just in peoples sexual abilities.

I don't think that it is though. It is related to pleasure to some degree, but masturbation can be pleasurable, sex with a prostitute can be pleasure, there are a million different kinds of pleasurable activities that don't form the kind of strong emotional bond between people like sex does within a relationship.

That's just degrees of pleasure in my opinion. I agree love makes sex better I still consider it pleasure though. So it seems a matter of definitions as opposed to real disagreement.

Fair. I think your definition would be better off if split up into base pleasure and emotional benefits, so as to facilitate discussion.

Maybe but I'm personally utterly terrible at non-anger emotions. I can see your point intellectualy though.

In somewhat of a rephrase of what others have put in...Sex is a display of physical and ('or', in some cases of...more debatable healthiness) emotional care for the partner--and even spiritual. 'Tantric sex' is an attempt at invoking that last element deliberately, albeit in full hippy-dippy shenaniganry ways judging by news coverage. On a less silly and more culturally-recognizable level you also have abstinence-until-marriage as a principle that emphasizes sex as something more than physical or emotional.

I think ultimently that the question is a deeply personal one that will be ansered differently by different people. I think this is a case where there is no right anser and a lot of correct ones.

Weighing in as a virgin coming at this question from a purely abstract/philosophical perspective...

The understanding that I have, beyond the two obvious already stated, as that it's the most complete physical expression of intimacy and companionship you can have with someone. Which is part of why it's so distorting and destructive when you try to share that part of you cheaply with someone you aren't an intimate companion with.
