It's a common theme trending among the left and progressives. To quote an SV user "the right wing is the most dominantly overwhelming threat to our democracy". It's an othering tactic.

And here I was having spent...I don't know, 9 or 12 units in college learning that democracy's greatest strength was the ability to tolerate and accept opposing political values. If that's how...small-hearted, democracy is in the First World these days, I think I'm better off just staying here in the Third World.

The problem isnt democracy the problem is modernity or to be exact its end.

Modernity is a period of experimentation in a civilizations life cycle where it experiments and tinkers with ideas before reaching its final form. Its normally a 300 or so year process and right now we have roughly 80 years of it left. So the united states, europe all of the west is essentally going to be well bug fucking crazy for awhile.

Lots of people are going to strait out die, so you might legit be safer in the third world right now for you know your entire life and the life of your children and their children.

It's insane how omission of important details and context can completely change the picture.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree on the whole modernity or end of history (if that's what you're referring to) thing. That said, I do agree with the general direction of your argument, since my own beliefs in the cycle of empires point to the same thing. We are witnessing the end of the American Empire, and either the beginning of a new dark age or Chinese hegemony for the next century or two.

I mean for an Empire we sure haven't been conquering a lot of stuff with the intent to own it in recent memory. Although I suppose we can finally annex Canada like the founders wanted to when we do get the expansion bug itching us

You are taking the ''history repeats itself'' waaaay to literally. A themes of human and societal behaviour repeat through the eras, but belief that what is happening now is a carbon copy of events millenias ago, down to the exact timetable is simply wrong. America is an empire, albeit not one of physical but economical dominance.

The context you're not getting with that is that the left have redefined democracy for themselves as "when we win". When they lose it's demonic "populism" (see Brexit, Trump, BoJo). So in that case, yes, that's correct in that the GOP and American right are the most pressing opponents for the Dems and the American left.

I’ve noticed that as well, it’s certainly made me rethink the meaning of « Liberal democracy forever » fukuyama talked about in the 90s and that got tooted by the entire western Elites for many many years, in indsight, looking at today situation, this all make so much sense.

Paul “fail upwards” Krugman is at it again.

Nonsense like this is why I tend to think most economists, like most businessmen, are just the guys who either made enough lucky guesses or connections earlier in life, to make a career out of gambling with other people's money. They don't actually know what they're doing; they're just selling the illusion that they do.

But cringe orange man says mean things about the news! 😭😭😭

“There are millions of immigrants who will come here and raise their right hand and buy into the creed...”
Yes and that’s the problem, their gullibility sustains the globalist american empire.
