When the effort is no longer profitable...

Captain Rex, once known as Clone Trooper CT-7567, had seen a lot in his life and there was very little could surprise him anymore.

So when he bumped into an old friend he had not expected to see again, as he exited Home One's mess on the way to prep gear for the assault on Endor, Rex was rather pleased. A familiar R2 droid had been about to enter the hatch, and instead let out a trill of recognition and happiness.

"R2-D2, is that you, old friend?" Rex asked, as he squatted down on his aged, but still limber knees to get a better look at the droid. It let out a series of alternating beeps, trills, and whistles as it rocked back and forth.

"I'm shocked you're still operational and haven't been memory wiped. Last time I saw you was just before the Battle of Courscant, right before Ahsoka headed to Mandalore. How did you survive the war, I thought General Skywalker died during Order 66? I know Senator Amaidala died about that time as well, I thought he had been killed with her." Rex asked, so many questions, that he'd long put aside as unanswerable, rushing to the forefront of his mind.

The way R2-D2 went completely silent and still, before spinning his dome to see who was around, and let out a short trill.

"Follow you? Why? What's going on, what happened? Why can't you tell me here?" Rex asked as R2 instructed him to follow the droid.

R2 led Rex down several corridors to one of the squadron common rooms. On the hatch was the emblem of Rogue Squadron, one of the Rebellion's elite starfighter squadrons. The droid opened the door, and headed inside.

"...Wedge, you'll do fine without me up there with you. I'm needed on the ground this time; there is something I must do that cannot be done in a cockpit." a young male voice was saying as Rex entered the room, before R2 went up to the man.

"R2, I thought you were helping make sure C-3PO was getting last minute oiling before the mission? Huh, what do you mean we need to talk in private?" the young man said as the droid started trilling and whistling at him.

"Sorry sir, the droid and I are old comrades, and he said he wanted to me follow him when I asked him how he survived the Clone Wars. I'm not sure why he brought me to you." Rex said, trying to figure out why the young man he was talking to seemed so familiar.

"R2, you never told me you fought in the Clone Wars? Sorry, where are my manners. I'm Luke Skywalker, what's your name." The young man said, causing Rex's mouth to drop open.

"Pardon me, did you say your last name is Skywalker?! I...sir, my name is Captain Rex; are you related to Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, by chance?" Rex asked, feeling like he was dreaming. Maybe some how General Skywalker had saved the child Padme had been carrying, even if he couldn't save her.

However, the look on the younger Skywalker's face darken and twisted in a way that made Rex very uneasy.

"Wedge, can you excuse us for a few minutes." Luke said quietly. The other pilot nodded, reading the room and heading through the hatch.

Luke waited till the door shut, before he took a seat; R2 simply moving over to the side quietly.

"Captain, I am the son of Anakin Skywalker, but before we begin, what we are about to discuss cannot leave this room, not for now. I take it you knew my father and R2-D2 during the Clone Wars?" Luke asked, his eyes seeming to be looking far away from the room they were in.

"That I did; served along side him, General Kenobi, his apprentince Commander Tano, and the Jedi throughout most of the war. He was a great leader, a great man, and we saved each other's lives many times. That R2 unit was your mother's gift to your father after their secret wedding, and he saved both of me and your father countless times." Rex replied, which caused a surprised look on Luke's face, before he looked at R2.

"Why did you never say anything R2? You knew who Obi-wan was the second you landed on Tatooine, didn't you? That's why you headed out on your own that night. You even knew who my mother was; not even Aunt Beru or Uncle Owen would say anything about her. Neither did Obi-wan or Yoda." Luke said, almost accusingly, at the droid.

"Wait, you met General Kenobi and Master Yoda?" Rex replied, his head swimming with the news.

"Yes, though they are both dead now. Obi-wan was killed on the Death Star shortly before the Battle of Yavin, while Yoda passed away only a few days ago after instructing me as best he could. Captain, I have some news you are not going to like to hear. You may want to sit down yourself." Luke said, grimacing as he rubbed the wrist of his right hand.

Rex could tell something ugly was coming, but he decided to stand. "With due respect sir, I've seen, heard, and done enough ugly things things in my life. I'll take it standing, if it's all the same to you."

Luke looked at R2, who let out a mournful sound, then looked at Rex. "So you know part of it R2. Ok, well, there is no easy way for me to say this, I have barely accepted myself. Captain, R2, my father is Darth Vader; Obi-wan said he betrayed the Jedi and destroyed them. He tried to recruit me to overthrow the Emperor on Cloud City, where he told me the truth about who he is." Luke said, looking Rex straight in the eye.

Rex was stunned, it was like someone had told him the Hutts where starting an anti-slavery crusade. It clashed with everything he knew, with everything he had thought about General Skywalker, and yet when he remembered Ahsoka's words just before the inhibitor chip forced him to fire on her, and how she'd reacted to Vader's involvement with the campaign around Lothal and Ezra Bridger. He remember the warning Ahsoka had gotten from Maul during the Seige of Mandalore. Suddenly, Rex understood why the Jedi had been destroyed so thoroughly, and why the Emperor had chosen Vader as his right hand man. But some things weren't adding up; Padme's death and the suit foremost among them.

"I...sir, I do not know what to say. What you are telling me...some of it makes sense, some of it...I don't understand how your father ended up turning on the Jedi Order or why he has chosen to disguise himself in that suit under that name. He was a hero of the Republic, and a good man when I knew him. But I also know the Jedi were betrayed and destroyed by those they had trusted. The Emperor turned the Jedi's own troops against them, and a few Jedi like your father joined the Empire after turning on their fellows or being broken. R2 was still your father's astromech when I last saw him, and you mentioned a droid named C-3PO when I was coming in...sir, your father build C-3PO as a child and gave him to your mother, Senator Padme Amidala, as an aide. Your parents couldn't be open about there love due to Jedi rules, but those droids were always around them." Rex said, trying to figure out what the hell had happened to change Anakin into Vader, and how Luke was alive when Padme had died without giving birth, from what Rex had been able to glean off the holonet after the end of the Clone Wars.

"You knew my mother? She was a Senator?! And 3PO knows too? R2, you knew all this an never told me; why did 3PO never say anything?" Luke said looking between Rex and the droid. R2 let out a sound, and both of them were taken aback by what the droid said.

"They wiped 3PO's memory when you and him were sent to Alderaan with...Leia?" Luke asked, looking perplexed. R2's answer came shortly, and both there jaws dropped.

"Anything else you are hiding? Do you know what happened to my father to make him change?" Luke asked, while Rex stroked his beard, trying to take in everything he was learning. R2's reply was hesitant, and he actually began backing away from the two men.

"You won't tell us! What the kriff R2, I've trusted you with my life many times, and you won't tell me what happened to cause him to change into Vader?!" Luke said as he began to get out of his seat.

"Calm down sir; R2-D2 was at your father's side for years and I know this droid won't hold things back without a reason. R2, I was with Ahsoka when Order 66 happened, I was able to tell her about Fives before the chip took complete control, and she took the it out of my head before we both escaped. She said something awful had happened with General Skywalker, and I know his rep as Vader. Did losing Padme drive him over the edge?" Rex asked, kneeling down in front of the droid. R2's answer was short and to the point.

"Ask him myself, since I'm going to confront Vader at Endor anyway." Luke said before he grimly nodded.

"You know he's going to be at Endor? How...wait, you're Force sensitive, aren't you? What do you hope to accomplish confronting Vader? Where's your lightsaber?" Rex said, things all falling together.

"Yes, I can touch the Force like my father. Obi-wan and Yoda instructed me as best they could, even from beyond the grave in Obi-wan's case. There is still good in my father, I felt it when I fought him, and I want to bring him back to the light. My lightsaber is charging onboard the Falcon at the moment; I was planning to retrieve it just before the ground team launched." Luke said, as he leaned back in his chair to stare at the ceiling of the room. Rex was trying to figure out what to say, what to do, when he decided Luke needed back up.

"Well sir, if it's all the same to you, there is a call I need to make. Can that Lambda fit another ground team member?" Rex asked, coming to a decision.

"Sure, though it'll be tight. Why do you ask?" Luke said, looking at him and trying to read the clone trooper.

"There is someone who needs to be there, to help you, if there is truly good left in your father. I'm not sure where she is right now, but if I can find her, Ahsoka Tano needs to accompany us to confront your father. She was one of the people he trusted and cared about most. And if your father is serving Palpatine, who also goes by the name Darth Sidious, that means the Emperor has the Force as well, and you will need back up to defeat him. Lady Tano is one of the most powerful Light-Side Force wielders left in the galaxy. I thought she'd died on Malachor IV for a while, but I found out she's been on a personal mission to find her disappeared apprentice Ezra Bridger for several years now. But I expect she might break off that search for this. Give me a few minutes." Rex said as he pulled up his personal comm, and hit his personal channel to General Hera Syndulla.

"Well this is a surprise, Rex. I thought you'd be busy prepping gear for the ground assault. What can I do for you?" The green skinned Twi'lek female said through the comm.

"Do you have an emergency contact for Ahsoka? I know she wanted to stay deep cover till she found Ezra, but something's come up that she needs to hear." Rex said as he looked at Luke, who was looking at Rex while putting his hand on R2's dome.

"I have that channel, but I haven't had any contact with Ahsoka for over a year. I have no idea where she is or if she'll even be able to answer. Here, I'll send you the channel, you can speak to her yourself; I need to get the Ghost prepped before we head to Endor with the Fleet. Hope she can help with whatever it is you need to speak with her about." Hera said, before Rex's comm beeped, and her holo faded.

"So this Ahsoka Tano was close to my father, and his apprentice? How did she survive the destruction of the Jedi Order?" Luke asked.

"Well, for a while she was a Jedi Padawan, though I called her Commander; was a little rough to begin with but grew into a...person who could hold her own in any battle and has a noble heart better than 90% of the Jedi out there. But...the Jedi Order was far from perfect, and she was framed by another Jedi for crimes she didn't commit. She was ejected from the Order initially, but was offered a chance to rejoin when her name was cleared; Commander Tano turned it down, and left the Order for good over it's hypocrisy. Close to the end of the war she came back with intel on the person in charge of Mandalore at the time, and served the Republic as a citizen, not a Jedi. We escaped a sabotaged and crashing Venator cruiser when Order 66 came down; it was an ugly time during the Empire's rise and we drifted apart till Ezra found me for her. Ahsoka knew your father as well as anyone, probably better than even Obi-wan did in some ways, and her treatment by the Order definitely angered your father. She might be able to help you reach him." Rex said, inputting the new comm channel Hera had given him.

A few moments later the head of a Togruta female popped up, and stared at Rex for a second before speaking.

"Rex? I gave this channel to Hera, before I went searching. Both you and Hera know my search for Ezra requires I minimize contact with the Rebellion for now. But I felt a...tremor in the Force a few minutes ago, like something massive had shifted; what's going on? And who's that with you?" Ahsoka asked.

"Ahsoka, how quickly can you make it to the Sullust system rendezvous point?" Rex asked.

"Sullust...maybe 4 to 6 hours, if I push my ship's hyperdrive to the limit. Why?" She asked.

"Ahsoka, the young man behind me is Luke Skywalker; he's General Skywalker's son, and apparently Princess Leia of Alderaan is his twin sister. I'm sitting in a briefing room with him and kriffing R2-D2 on Home One. Did you know Anakin became Darth Vader?" Rex said, letting that sink in.

The Togruta's eye's widen, then closed and she sighed. "Yes Rex, I know Anakin became Vader. I never told you because I know how much you idolized and trusted Anakin. I had suspicions about who Vader was while we were fighting along side Ezra and Kanan, but I confirmed it on Malachor IV. But I had no idea Anakin had children; Padme was the mother, wasn't she? She died so suddenly at the end of the Clone Wars and I never found out what happened to her. I wonder if that's what broke him." Ahsoka said, as a small tear ran down her face.

"It seems that way, at least according to R2. The droid says he knows what happened to Anakin and Padme, but that we need to ask him ourselves. I'm calling because Luke says he's going to be confronting Vader at Endor, to try to bring him back to the light. I'm planning to help him as back up, see if maybe there is some of the General I proudly served somewhere under that black armor." Rex said, as Luke moved in closer.

"Bring him back to the light...there was no light left in him that I could feel when I fought him on Malachor. And without the Force Rex, you'd probably just end up a puppet of the Emperor again; Sith mind control powers are not to be underestimated by Force users, never mind regular people." Ahsoka said, her eyes taking a far-off look.

"Miss Tano, I know what I felt when I fought him on Bespin. When he thought I was going to die rather than join him, he felt fear, not for himself or his plans, but fear of being powerless to help someone he cared about. There is good in him, I know it. I wish Obi-wan, Yoda, and R2 had been honest from the beginning. Maybe I could have brought him back to the light on Cloud City if I had known. I don't think Vader knew he a child that was alive till after the Battle of Yavin." Luke said earnestly.

"You met Obi-wan and Yoda...they warned you about this as well I'm guessing. But Anakin didn't know he had living children when I fought him...I remember how much he cared for Padme and his friends. Maybe I didn't see the light in him, because it was too deeply buried till he found out about you. And you said Leia Organa is your twin sister; if R2 knew that, so he must have been there when you were born. This...this changes everything. Maybe Anakin...if he turns on Sidious, and we are there as back-up...If there is any light left in Anakin, I owe it to him to help you try to bring it out. I left your father's side when I should have stayed, left him alone, even if it was for the right reasons. I might have been able to keep him from falling if I was there." The Togruta woman said as she slowly shook her head at the memory.

"Then please help me save my father, now. We can fit you in on the ground team going to Endor to take down the shield generator complex, and once there, find a way to confront him. But we cannot delay launch of the mission for very long, or we will miss the Emperor's visit." Luke stated.

Ahsoka closed her eyes and nodded after a few seconds, but her eyes were weary.

"Will be there as fast as I can. May the Force be with us." The Togruta woman said, because closing the channel.

When the effort is no longer profitable...

"Admiral, a shuttle just jumped in close to the fleet and is bearing on Home One, but it's not broadcasting normal Alliance codes. Should I alert the CAP to intercept?" A sensor technician said as Admiral Ackbar and Mon Mothma were going over some last minute details.

"The last of the scheduled arrivals got here 2 hours ago; send the CAP to intercept. Request the shuttle identify itself and stand-off beyond 100 kilometers from the fleet." Ackbar said, before turning to Mon Mothma.

"Ma'am, you may want to get to your own shuttle and prepare to depart for the Sullust fleet." Ackbar stated before heading up to the sensor station.

"What do we have here, lieutenant?" Ackbar said as he looked at the sensor read-outs. It was odd, the readings almost looked like an old Republic-era Jedi shuttle.

"Sir, the individual claims to be code-name Fulcrum and requests immediate berthing on Home One. Says she's here at the request of Captian Rex from the ground team. Sir, that code hasn't been used since before Yavin, and the shuttle is not on any Alliance registry." the lieutenant said.

Fulcrum...Ackbar did a double take at that name and who had requested it meet the fleet; those facts, combined with the shuttle's type, made him certain he knew who was onboard. But why had the old clone requested she come out of deep-cover?

"We don't have room for the shuttle in the main hanger, tell Fulcrum to head for the port-aft secondary airlock. I'll be making my way there now, please inform Captain Rex to meet me there." Ackbar said before making his way toward the turbo-lifts.

****

"Captain Rex, please report to the port-aft secondary airlock, the Admiral is requesting your presence." a voice chirped from the comm on Rex's belt. He had spent the last few hours regaling Luke with tales of his father's exploits during the Clone Wars; Luke had listened with rapt attention, while R2-D2 added a few visual aids from his memory bank.

"Ah, that's probably Commander Tano now. The Admiral fought alongside your father, her, and myself during the Mon Cala civil war; he's probably rather surprised to see her as well." Rex said as he motioned for Luke and R2 to follow him.

It was a quick walk to the nearest turbolift, and after a few minutes, the trio exited into a corridor and saw the Admiral with a couple guards waiting by an airlock door.

"Well Captain, I'm rather surprised you thought it necessary to pull Agent Tano out from her operation, and rather surprised she agreed to it. What is this all about, and why is Commander Skywalker with you?" the Admiral asked, looking at the three with...not suspicion, but definitely curiosity.

"Admiral, sir, there are...reasons for my contacting her that are...need to know for now. What you do need to know, is that Commander Skywalker is the son of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, Commander Tano's Master." Rex said, motioning to Luke.

Ackbar's mouth feel open, and then he laughed a bit. "I cannot believe I never made the connection, but I thought General Skywalker died during the Purge, and never knew he had fathered any children. Attachment was forbidden for Jedi, after all. Still doesn't completely explain why Agent Tano is about to dock with this ship."

"Admiral, I do not want to say more in the open; this is a highly personal matter. Suffice to say we've requested her help for the ground team." Luke said, trying to get the Admiral to realize this was not a matter for ears of his guards.

"Hmm, she would be rather useful in ground combat. Ah, I believe Agent Tano just docked, she should be out shortly." Ackbar said as they felt a thump through the deck.

A few minutes later, and a Togruta female emerged from the air-lock. R2-D2 immediately drove up to her, trilling happily.

"It's good to see you too, R2. Permission to come aboard Admiral?" Ahsoka asked as she saluted the Mon Cal.

"Permission granted, Agent Tano. The ground team could definitely use the extra talent you represent. You know Captain Rex, and behind him is..."Ackbar said, but Ahsoka brushed right pasted him to hug Rex, then stopped short of Luke and looked at him.

"Luke, you have your father's build, but your mother's face. I can feel the Force radiating off you. You are probably more powerful than your father was, but you are...undisciplined in your thoughts and feelings. Much like your father in that regard. How long do we have before the ground team needs to depart?" Ahsoka asked, as she examined Luke with her eyes and with the Force.

"Ground team is set to depart in half an hour, Commander. General Solo will be leading it; we have a Lambda class shuttle and codes that should get us to the ground without our cover being blown." Rex replied.

"Not much time; ok, show me to an armory, I want to put together a small field kit. Admiral, please put my shuttle on auto-pilot and leave it at this location when the fleet jumps. It doesn't have any weapons, so it'd be useless in a fight." Ahsoka said as she turned to the Mon Cal.

"Will do Agent Tano; these two can show you to the armory, and to the Lambda. But I want to ask, have you found any clues to Bridger's location?" Ackbar asked.

"Nothing solid; Purgill sightings have been very rare since Lothal, and even rumors of them are sparse these days." Ahsoka said, shaking her head. Ackbar nodded, then motioned his guards to follow him to the turbo-lift.

Rex led the group to an armory near the landing bay the ground team was departing from, while Ahsoka spoke with Luke about his early life, his time on Tatooine, and his part in the Battle of Yavin and Hoth, trying to get a sense for the boy.

"Wait, Jabba's dead, and Leia killed him with her own slave chain?" Ahsoka asked, eye's wide open as they entered the armory.

"That's what she told me; the barge he was on definitely was destroyed with him onboard." Luke said, as he started grabbing his own kit.

"Padme would have been proud of her for that, she was a very strong woman and good fighter when she couldn't negotiate her way out of things. You might mention that to your father when we see him, see how he reacts; he hated the Hutts and Jabba due to being a slave to them on Tatooine when he was a child." Ahsoka said as she started trying to find some low profile armor to wear.

"My father was a slave?!" Luke said, astonished by the factoid.

"As I heard it, he won his freedom in a pod-race with the help of a the Jedi who was General Kenobi's Master, shortly before the battle of Naboo. He joined the Jedi Order right after that, at about age 9 or so." Rex intoned.

"May I see your lightsaber, Luke?" the Togruta woman asked; Luke handed it over too her, and she inspected the outside, before igniting it.

"This is a relatively new blade, isn't it. I cannot feel a Kyber crystal or Ilum crystal in it, so you had to have forged it from an industrial furnace sourced crystal, am I right?" Ahsoka said, feeling it's balance as she weaved it through some basic motions.

"Yes, I finished it several months ago from instructions Obi-wan left in his hut. The instructions made it sound like Jedi had been losing lightsabers quite often during the Clone Wars." Luke said as she handed it back; that cause both Rex and Ahsoka to chuckle.

"No, most Jedi didn't lose their lightsabers very often. Obi-wan had those instruction because you father kept losing his blade during...some rather insane stunts he pulled during the Clone Wars. He lost his lightsaber about as often as he crashed the ships he was in." Ahsoka replied as she finished putting gear into a rucksack.

"To be fair Commander, General Skywalker only survived most of those crashes because he was the best starfighter pilot in the galaxy." Rex stated.

"Yet I seem to remember a certain buzz-droid infested Aetherspite that I had to rescue him from after they shocked him unconscious. That was right before..." Ahsoka's tone shift, and she went silent.

"I never understood why Ofree did what she did, and framed you for it Commander. But in a way, maybe she saved your life by showing you the hypocrisy of the Jedi Order." Rex said in hushed tones.

"I prefer not to think about those days Rex, but I may need to in order to reach Anakin. He was the only Jedi that didn't turn their back on me when that happened, the only one who believed my innocence. Luke, you need to know, your father had anger in him at the Jedi for many things that happened to him, myself, and because it forced your parents to keep their love a secret. I am not sure if reminding him of those days will make it easier, or harder, to reach him." Ahsoka said, eyes glazed over as she remembered the past.

"I have so many questions, I don't even know where to start. This is a lot of info to take in all at once." Luke replied, as he put on his forest camo poncho. He was surprised when Ahsoka grabbed him by the shoulders and turned him around to face her.

"Luke, put it all out of your mind, and focus on the here and now. I have fought your father since he became Vader, and the only reason you survived on Bespin is because he wasn't trying to kill you. If you want to save him and bring him back to the Light, you cannot allow your thoughts to wonder or be undisciplined; the Emperor will try to turn your own thoughts against you to make you fight him. The stories of the good your father did, keep those in your mind, but keep your center focused on your own connection to the Light. I am going to be trying to mask my own Force presence till we meet with Anakin; if he senses me too soon, he may believe I have...corrupted you and that could make it harder to pull him back to the Light. Once we get on the shuttle, I am going to be going into a Force trance; do not disturb me till we reach the ground, alright." Ahsoka said, trying to impress upon Luke how dangerous it could be for him to be too hopeful, too distracted, or too anxious to confront his father.

Luke took a step back, closed his eyes, and breathed deeply for a few seconds, before meeting Ahsoka's gaze and nodding.

"Well, if we're all ready to go, we shouldn't keep General Solo waiting." Rex said, before the three of them picked up their packs and headed to the hanger.

Bacle

When the effort is no longer profitable...
Founder
"So, who's the Togruta that came up the ramp with you and Capt Rex, just before we left? I hadn't seen her before in any of the mission briefings." Han asked Luke after the Lambda entered lightspeed.

"Her name is Ahsoka Tano, and she's is....a special operative for the Alliance. Capt Rex requested her help with the mission due to the possibility we may run into Vader." Luke hedged, not wanting to air all his secrets about his parents to Han.

"What's she got that we didn't already have?" Han asked.

"She's a former Jedi Padawan and long time Rebel agent, Han. She's been in the Rebellion almost as long as I have, and is probably better trained with a lightsaber than Luke. My father Bail trusted her with his life, and with sensitive information multiple times." Leia said, looking rather intensely.

"You know who she is Leia?" Luke asked.

"Yes, she's actually rather famous among the older leadership of the Rebellion. She was one of our best and most active agents back before the Battle of Yavin, but went missing for a few years before turning up to say she was going to look for her lost apprentice, Ezra Bridger." Leia replied.

"Oh, so we have another wizard with us, and a formally trained one at that; well, guess we really lucked out, didn't we Chewie. Maybe we should have her brief the troops on how to fight other wizards while we are waiting to reach Endor." Han snarked.

"Just focus on getting us to Endor, Han; she's said to only wake her from the trance when we reach ground." Luke chided him.

"Off to save your Master again, young one?" Came a chuckling voice through the darkness of the Force Trance.

Ahsoka started, and found herself back in the Jedi Temple on Courscant, standing in the center of the Jedi Counsel Chamber. Sitting right in front of her was Master Yoda, a slight grin on his face.

"Of course she is, it is in her nature." A familiar voice said just off to her left; Ashoka looked over to see Obi-wan Kenobi leaning against the window of the Chamber, smiling at her with mirth in his eyes.

"Master Yoda, Obi-wan, what is...how am I speaking with you two; Luke said you were both dead." Ahsoka stammered as she gazed around the Chamber, which looked just as it had before her exile from the Jedi.

"Oh, we have certainly shuffled off our mortal coils, but there are ways for those strong in the Force to retain the individuality and consciousness after death." Obi-wan said.

"However, discussion of our current state, we did not contact you for. Fate of your Master, we must speak with you about." Yoda said, looking tired and yet focused.

"I know Anakin is Vader now, I know of his children, and of Luke's desire to try to bring his father back to the light. I...I did not think there was any good left in him after Malachor IV. But Luke won't be deterred, and I owe it to Anakin to try to help bring him back to the Light, if that is possible. I left when I should have stayed, I could have been there for him, maybe kept him from falling to the Dark Side to begin with." Ahsoka said, the sight of the Chamber stirring many memories in her.

"Perhaps. Or perhaps you also would have been one of the first Anakin killed when he was turned by Sidious, had you stayed. In any event, the future is now in great flux, and you and Luke will be the ones to decide the shape said future will take." Obi-wan intoned.

"Eager to convert young Skywalker to the Dark Side, Sidious is; wishes to replace the 'damaged' apprentice he has in Vader, Sidious does. When Sidious sees you, change his mind he may; attempt to recruit you and Luke, or make you fight each other to see which is stronger, his new goal may become." Yoda said, looking intently at Ahsoka's face.

"Sidious has nothing to temp me with." Ahsoka stated firmly.

"Not even if he offers information that may lead you to your lost apprentice, Ezra Bridger?" A new voice queried. Ahsoka's head, lekku, and montrals whipped around to see her old master, Plo Koon was standing behind her.

"Master Plo...no, even if Sidious offers me something that may help me find Ezra, I won't take it. I only want to help bring my master back, if that is possible, and to end Sidious's reign of terror if I can. It's the least I can do for everyone Sidious and his Empire have hurt and killed." Ahsoka stated, as she looked over the being who had effectively raised her.

"Revenge is not the Jedi way, young one." Yoda cautioned.

"Don't you remember; I'm no Jedi." Ahsoka said, as she looked at the spirits who had assembled to speak with her.

Ahsoka was surprised when all 3 of the spirits chuckled and smiled at her, before Obi-wan spoke.

"No, you are not; and yet in many ways you are a truer Jedi than any of us ever were. That is why you can save both your Master and his son, if you are able to defeat the Emperor on his own ground." the spirit said, as the world started to fade back to blackness.

"Reclaim your title as Jedi and reclaim your Master's soul, you may, if you are strong enough in the Light. May the Force be with you, young one." Yoda's voice said as they all faded out.

"Don't you remember; I'm no Jedi." Ashoka said, as she looked at the spirits who had assembled to speak with her.
Ah, Ahoska. "I'm no Jedi, I just happen to act in the most Jedi fashion imaginable, follow Jedi ideals, and wield traditional Jedi weapons and use the force like Jedi, but I'm really not a Jedi at all."

Done.

Heh, yeah.

Ahsoka may have left the Jedi, but the Jedi teachings never left her.

Capt. Rex felt a stranger kind of nostalgia and focus come over him as he stood in the aisle so Ashoka could use a seat for her trance.

It felt like riding into one of the many, many times he had ridden into battle during the Clone Wars with the young Togruta at his side.

However, Rex understood the gravity of what his mission would demand of him, particularly now that he knew who was behind the black armor that had hounded the Rebellion since the beginning. Yet the if it truly was Anakin Skywalker behind the mask, so much of what happened during the end of the Clone Wars took a new light in his mind.

That his children had survived, but Padme had not, and R2-D2 knew what had happened but would not reveal it...the little droid was giving his old owner one last bit of respect and faith by letting General Skywalker tell his son, himself.

Rex looked at Ashoka out of the corner of his eye, and knew however hard this was for him, for Ashoka it had to be so much worse. She had known for years, but she had promised to find Ezra and bring him home. Ashoka had put her promise to her own apprentice above any desire for revenge or betrayal she may have had; that was definitely more Obi-wan's influence than Anakin's.

Now she had to face it all, to face her master, his general, their friend, and the father of the young man who was on the cusp of being a fully trained Jedi himself. All while facing down the person who had masterminded the Clone Wars, was effectively responsible for Rex's very existence, and was also a Sith Lord who had nearly come to dominate the known galaxy.

And whatever their personal feelings were, they knew that the Rebellion had it's own mission here, one that superseded everything else.

Rex felt a jolt in the shuttle as it exited hyperspace, and could only wait in silence as shuttle flew towards the forest moon. He couldn't hear what was going on in the cockpit, so he instead looked again at Ashoka, figuring if there was anything he could do or needed to do it things went south during the approach, her reaction would be his first warning.

The Togruta stayed still, tranquil as she breathed shallowly with her eyes closed. The shuttle kept on it's course, and no sounds of alarm or evasive actions had occurred.

Rex felt the shuttle hit atmo and start to decent to the Forest Moon, and started preparing for landing. When the shuttle finally shutdown, the ground team began to disembark quickly, and Rex went to wake Ashoka.

"Hey Commander, we've hit ground." Rex said as he lightly shook the Togruta.

"Thank you Rex. Vader will be coming for Luke soon enough, and when he does, we will need to separate from General Solo's team. Till then I'll bring up the rear of the team and keep an eye out for scouts." Ashoka said as she donned her pack.

She followed the team out of the shuttle, and felt a strange sense of calm as she fell back on the instincts and mental practices that she had honed avoiding the Empire while searching for Ezra. Ashoka needed her mind alert, but clear, if she was going to be helping the Rebels destroy the shield generator and confronting her old Master with his son.

AN: So not the most interesting chapter, but I needed it to help bridge to the next bit, instead of just time jumping and skipping everything before the Ewok village.

Chapter 5

When the effort is no longer profitable...

The Ewok village had a serene, almost innocent air to it, even after the whole trapping and trying to eat several members of the ground team. Ahsoka knew Luke and Leia were definitely Anakin's kids now, after what had transpired in the forest.

Ahsoka had been tempted to help the team on several occasions, but knew she needed to keep her force presence as small as possible for as long as possible. As well her place at the back of the group meant she was responsible for watching the team's back, so she had to focus on physical alertness over Force awareness.

However, watching Luke float 3PO around had been rather amusing. Currently the golden droid was regaling the natives with the tales of the team's leaders, including Luke.

Ahsoka could feel Rex approaching her in the bridge's motion, and turned to accept a mug of caf from the old clone.

"I just spoke with R2; he gave me the recordings you asked for, but said it would need Luke's thumbprint to activate the holorecording. He also gave me a copy of his whole Impreial encryption database and all of the General's old personal codes." Rex said as he motioned to the small palm-sized device in his belt.

"I was wondering if he would, glad he did. R2 is still being loyal to Anakin in the last real way he can, without endangering his friends. And having his encryption datatbase meant we might be able to turn the Death Star's system's against Sidious. Any edge against that monsterous Sith woud help. Does General Solo know you won't be there for the operation tomorrow against the bunker?" Ahsoka asked, having had to speak with Solo privately herself, to make clear she was here to help Luke deal with Vader, not to help assault the bunker. However, Rex was someone with enough combat expereince his presence on the team may be missed if he was not there as was originally planned.

"I may be good, but we both know that if Luke falls to Sidious, and if either the father or the son is forced to kill the other, then what happens down here won't matter. We need to back Luke up and find out what happened. I owe it to Fives, to Jesse, and all my brothers in the 501st who died fighting for and believing in General Skywalker or following a command they could not disobey. I told R2 to explain as best he could to Solo before the attack, so the General can modify the plans." Rex answered, face seeming to stare back into the past.

"...I still get nightmares about the men on that cruiser as we crashed. In hind sight, maybe it would have been better to let them kill Maul, instead of use him as a distraction. Would certainly have saved Ezra and Kanan a lot of grief. Maybe we could have found a way off the ship without killing so many good men." Ahsoka said softly.

"No, you made the right call; my men would have taken us out if they were not also dealing with the chaos Maul caused. His rampage kept the bridge from properly coordinating the hunt for us, and damage Maul caused kept the crew from being able to properly seal against us. It also kept them from self-destructing the ship; which would have been a last resort to kill us. Those men died, but we did not kill them, Sidious did." Rex said, putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder her.

"...I know." Ahsoka said, looking up at the old clone. Then she did a double take.

"You shaved your beard...I haven't seen you without it in years." The Torgruta said, slightly shocked and kinda amused.

"Truth be told, wasn't sure General Skywalker would recognize me without it." The old clone said with a laugh.

"You still think hijacking the shuttle mid flight is the best plan?" Rex then asked the former Jedi Padawan, who he saw as a daughter.

"Yes. Luke needs to confront his father alone, at least at first. We need to wait till they are alone and contained, where no outside interference can stop us. Did you bring some droid poppers?" The Togruta asked in return.

"Yes. I'm not going to let Senator Amidala's son die if there is no good left in the General. But I know the General well enough to know he might be able to be reached if we can figure out what happened and talk him through his anger. But we might have to get his blade away from him first. He needs to know Fives didn't die in vain, and he needs to know about what Maul said on Mandalore. He's been a slave or servant to someone all his life. I'm pretty sure it's the same master that put Order 66 in my brother's and I's brains. He needs to know R2-D2 is still being loyal to him, and see the recordings. He needs the information to make a choice he was never given before, to be free." Rex said solemnly.

"If there is any good left in Anakin, we will find it." Ahsoka said as she watch Luke leave the Ewok village.

Love the chapter I hope R2 makes it clear to Han that Rex isnt staying well in advance of the battle as he has a habit of having the worse possible timing to mention things.

When the effort is no longer profitable...

Sheev Palpatine awoke with a start in his private chambers on the the Second Death Star.

Vader had reported to him that he had sensed his son amongst the Rebels who had infiltrated the Sanctuary Moon of Endor. The time was approaching when the Sith Lord would have a chance to convert the son, and replace the disappointment of an apprentice the father had turned out to be.

However, the Sith Lord and Emperor of the Galactic Empire was still an old man confined to his aging body. Sheev had clones tucked away in the Deep core on Byss under the watchful eyes of his most loyal and fanatical followers, but he could not simply transfer to one of those without causing himself and his empire even more problems.

So Palpatine had done something many old men do, and decided to take a nap so he could face what was coming with no bodily fatigue.

"Hahahahahaha."

A nap he had just been awoken from by the sound, the feeling through the Force, of his old, dead failure of an apprentice Maul, and also that most annoying, but thankfully also dead Jedi Kenobi, laughing in unison.

Something had changed in the Force and Sheev Palpatine felt something he hadn't experienced in many years; true fear.

****
Following Luke out of the village at a distance had been easy enough, and trailing the AT-AT back to it's base was straight forward. Getting both of them into the base, and knocking out a stormtrooper so Rex could take his armor, was almost like old times in how they acted and worked as a duo.

"Any idea were Luke or Vader are?" The old clone asked.

"Somewhere near the landing pad, maybe on the shuttle, or at least Luke is. Vader...I think he's in the command center. I'm worried about the amount of troops we're seeing, though." Ahsoka said.

"I saw about a dozen men guarding the land pad, but the whole complex is crawling with troopers. And not just regular garrison guards either. They look like they are expecting an assault; I think this whole thing might be a trap. We need to warn the ground team and the fleet. I know we are here to help Luke confront his father, but we could lose most of our attack forces if they get caught in this trap." Rex said, a look of deep concern on his face.

"I thought of that too; we need to help even the odds. That trooper had a thermal detonator on him, right?" the Togruta said, looking towards the shield generator's tower.

"He did." Rex replied, getting the feeling he used to get with some of the more insane plans that General Skywalker and Commander Tano had come up with.

"Could I have it?" she asked.

"What are you thinking?" the clone asked in return, as he hand her the explosive.

"I'm thinking we could use some insurance for the ground team, and a way to possibly distracted Vader long enough to surprise him and take the shuttle." Ahsoka said, before using the Force to jump on top of the building they had been hiding behind.

"Heh, just like old times." Rex said to himself as he began to make his way towards the landing pad.

Chapter 7

Bacle

When the effort is no longer profitable...
Founder
Ahsoka was used to having to be stealthy; her years trying to track down Ezra had made it a force of habit.

Her hunt had taken her far away from civilization for long periods of time, hunting down possible decayed purgill hyper-jump signatures on the fringes of known space, and trying to search for Ezra via the Force during meditations.

Getting near the shield generator took every non-Force assisted trick the Togruta knew, and no small amount of luck.

Ahsoka had found her way into the maintenance substation at the base of the shield emitter tower. There were three officers inside, and getting them out of the way without setting off any alerts would be...tricky.

The former Jedi Padawan contemplated trying to use a subtle Jedi mind to get them out of the way and how she would get a warning out to the ground team to hold off on the assault on the bunker.

But with Vader so close, opening herself up to the Force like that would likely blow her cover prematurely.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a MSE droid wheeling it's way down the corridor below the pipes Ashoka was hiding in the shadow of.

A spark inspiration stuck her, and swung down to grab the droid off the floor, while sticking a slicer-pad into it's programing port.

"I've never seen a stormtrooper pay a MSE droid any mind unless it's delivering them forms to fill out." The Togruta thought as she began reprogramming the MSE.

She wipe it's current orders, and instead gave it a few simple commands to follow. It would use a droid comms terminal to send a burst transmission out on the coded frequency the strike team was monitoring for when the fleet arrived, with a warning to hold off on the attack till after the fleet arrived.

It would also act as a covert transport for the purloined thermal detonator, and take it into the maintenance spaces just below the shield emitter's dish. Ahsoka set the timer on the detonator for 1 minute after the fleet was due to arrive, so they would see it go down themselves and know the attack could commence.

It only took a couple minutes to complete the reprogramming, and send the MSE on it's way. With that done, Ahsoka started making her way along the pipes back towards where the landing pad with Vader's shuttle was.

****
Getting to the shuttle pad unmolested had turned out easier than Rex expected. Rex knew Ahsoka would find her way to the pad and get herself onboard the shuttle with her own skills; he just had to make sure he was able to find a way aboard the shuttle without tipping off Vader or anyone else that he was not one of the Empire's men.

Rex decided on just grabbing a datapad and a signal scanning rod from maintenance bay. From there he worked his way towards the pad, looking busy and pretending to be scannning at random points along the way. Rex told the officers at the entrance to shuttle pad area that he had been ordered to scan for possible Rebel transmissions in this area for the next several hours. They didn't question the old clone's story, obviously aware they were expecting an attack soon, and let him begin moving about the area.

Rex was able to surreptitiously make his way towards the shuttle. He noticed the guards from before were gone, and the only troopers left visible on the pad were the guards at the shuttle's ramp.

"Guess the want to stay out of sight till they can spring the trap. Not gonna work out that way, fella's. Now comes the tricky part..." the old clone thought to himself, circling the shuttle several times, before turning to one of the troopers guarding the shuttle ramp.

"Trooper, I need you help for a second, there's some anomalous signal coming from behind the forward gear hatch and I don't have the codes to open it. Need to make sure the Rebels haven't found a way to get anything onboard it." Rex said as he gestured towards the front of the craft.

"Yes sir." The stormtrooper replied and followed Rex towards the front of the shuttle.

Once they were in front of the hatch, the other trooper extended a rank stick into the port next to it, causing it to pop open. Rex pulled out the handstunner he had brought and jammed it the stormtrooper's neck joint, just as the Imperial turned back to face the clone. Rex caught the falling and convulsing trooper, while yanking his helmet off and slamming a hand over his mouth, before a quick twist of the neck removed one more of the Empire troops.

Stuffing the body of the trooper into the hatch, while taking his helmet, gear belt, and rifle, Rex marched over to resume the man's post at the bottom of the shuttle's ramp.

"Tech found nothing, just a stray signal from part of the engine controls." He said curtly to the other ramp guard, who made no reply or movement except a momentary inclination of his helmet.

Now Rex just had to wait for his old general, and his general's son, to board the craft and then...then maybe Rex would have a chance to see if there was anything left of his old superior under Vader's armor.

Chapter 8

Bacle

When the effort is no longer profitable...
Founder
Luke Skywalker had practiced meditating a lot over the last year, and had been in one for most of the morning. His father had placed him aboard the shuttle, under guard and in binders. A few minutes earlier Luke thought he might be able to feel Ahsoka's presence nearby, so he knew at least part of his back-up was present.

When he heard the ramp slide down, Luke presumed his father was finished with whatever business he was conducting at the base, and tried to clear his mind of anything meaningful.

Vader marched up the ramp with his troopers in tow, heading for the cockpit himself while barely sparing a glance for Luke. The young Jedi could feel his father lightly probing Luke's mind with his Force presence, but he was currently focused on bringing Luke before the Emperor and fighting his own internal turmoil. However, the troopers escorting him stopped and took their seats opposite him, with his their weapons casually pointed in Luke's direction.

Luke guessed that his father's love of flying was one of the few things that had survived from his former life, based on the stories Ahsoka and Rex had told. It would certainly explain why Vader was the most feared pilot in the entire Empire, on top of being the Emperor's top enforcer. He may want to pilot the shuttle himself, just to have some time behind the controls, though he expected his father would settle for glaring menacingly over the pilot's shoulder.

The engines started with a whine, and Luke felt the shuttle leave the pad.

Luke had done his best to keep his mind off Ahsoka and Rex while he was around his father.

Neither of them had said anything about how they would help him since the team landed, and had focused on the mission at hand until the team was at the Ewok village. He had lost track of them during the celebration, but knew they would find their own way to help him when the time came. Luke had realized that the less he knew about what they might plan to do, the less Vader may be able to glean from him as he felt his feelings.

About 10 minutes into the flight, several things happened all at once.

A maintenance panel on the ceiling of the main cabin popped open all of a sudden, and Ahsoka swung down into a double kick into the chest of one of the stormtrooper's across from Luke.

While this happened the other trooper hopped up, turn his gun on his fellow, and shot him in the chest as soon as Ahsoka cleared his line of fire, then hit the hatch control for the small engineering alcove between the main cabin and the cockpit as he ripped off his helmet, revealing it had been Rex the whole time.

However, Vader was already there with his lightsaber lit, but stopped short when he noticed who was in the cabin with Luke. For several second Luke felt surprise, relief, shock, regret, and sadness fly through Vader's mind. However before Vader could say anything, Rex spoke first.

"Clone Trooper CT-7567 and Commander Tano reporting that the Siege of Mandalore was a success, General Skywalker, sir." Rex said while snapping to attention in front of Vader.

Luke had expected Rex calling his father by that title would be the end of the clone, if his father was truly as far gone as he claimed.

However, instead Vader actually extinguished his lightsaber, nodded slightly to Rex, and turned to look at Ahsoka.

"...the Emperor believed you to still be on your hunt for Bridger, Ahsoka; he did not foresee your presence here. And Captain Rex, I can see your time with the Rebels has not dulled your skills. But you both must know that unless you submit to his will, the Emperor will not show any of you mercy." Vader said, looking over his former Padawan and First in Command.

"Master, I am here for your son's sake. He believes he can save you, that there is still light in you. I didn't feel it on Malachor IV, but now...it's buried deep, but it's there, even if you won't let yourself admit it. I think I have an idea of what you wanted to speak to me about before the Battle of Mandalore, and Anakin, I am so sorry we never spoke. When I left the Order, it felt like that meant I had to break contact with Padme as well; she was my friend and I wasn't there when both of you needed me." Ahsoka said, bowing low before Vader.

Luke could sense the anguish his mother's name brought up in Vader, the mass of conflicting feelings of guilt, shame, anger, and sorrow. But he also felt something else; a feeling of...nostalgia might be the best word, slipping into Vader's mind.

"General sir, you should know Maul warned Ahsoka about how Palpatine, or Lord Sidious, had been manipulating you for years and had groomed you for the role you are in now. Maul created the war on Mandalore to lure you there to kill you and deprive Sidious of his pupil. I know how much the Chancellor meant to you during the Clone Wars, how much you looked to him as a friend, maybe the closest thing to a father you ever had. So much about the end of the war and the rise of the Empire made so much more sense when Luke mentioned who is actually beneath that armor." Rex said from where he was still standing at attention.

"...I know Palpatine was manipulating me during those years now, Captain; it is how Sith operate. However I did not know that the Mandalore situation was Maul's attempt to lure me in and kill me. However, it changes nothing now. You will all be brought before the Emperor, and he will be your master now." Vader said, seeming to repeat himself about the Emperor almost for his own sake.

"General, I was able to warn Ahsoka about the inhibitor chips trooper Fives tried to warn us about; it's how she and I survived Order 66. You may not have had an inhibitor chip, and I don't know precisely how Sidious turned you against the Jedi, but I know one thing sir: you never had a chance to make the choice to be free and your own man. You had to hide your marriage, hide attachments, and follow the sometimes foolish dictates of the Jedi Council. You have been a slave or servant to one master or another your whole life, General. I am here not just for your son's sake, but for yours. You helped me rescue trooper Echo from the Separatists after everyone else thought he was dead. I am here to try to rescue you from the hell Sidious has made you live, and try to help you make up for the lost time you've missed with your children. After all the times you saved my life during the Clone Wars, I owed you too much not to try." Rex said defiantly.

"Children...as in more than one. Who is my other child?!" Vader said, surprise and...something that might have been joy in his voice as he asked.

"Princess Leia Organa; she's got your temper and tenacity, along Padme's diplomatic skills and wit. You should be proud. Also, you should know, Luke only met me and Rex because R2-D2 has been watching over your son for you since shortly before the Battle of Yavin. Oh and 3PO is still as prissy as ever. R2 says he knows some of what happened to you, but said he would let you tell us yourself. The little astromech is still trying to be loyal to you and still respects the man you were. He gave Rex a few sealed recordings that will only play for Luke's thumbprint, said it would help if there is was good left in you." Ahsoka said from where she was walking up besides Luke.

That stopped Vader in his tracks and even his breathing became irregular. Luke could sense that this news had turned that momentary feeling of joy into immense guilt and shame in his father. The Dark Lord actually seemed to deflate a bit, and took a seat against the bulkhead.

****

"No wonder she resisted the attempts of the interrogator droids. And no wonder the hyperdrive on the Falcon had been made functional at Bespin, if R2 was with Luke and Leia." Anakin Skywalker thought to himself from within the confines of his suit.

But knowing now that he had participated in the torture of his own daughter, brought back the nightmares of him choking Padme on Mustafar, and that unleashed a flood of memories and feelings he had walled off for years now. They had been leaking through bit by bit since Vader had felt Luke among the Rebel team, but now the dam had broke completely.

Seeing Ahsoka and Captain Rex being willing to risk confronting him, yet still believing there was good in him, after everything he had done...was something Anakin had never expected. Hearing Rex mention Fives and Echo had reminded him of a time when the soldiers who followed him did so out of loyalty and trust, more than fear. Sure, some of the 501st were still clone vets who had followed him as a Jedi, but their numbers were few and far between these days, and most of them were on the ground, prepping for the Rebel attack on the shield generator.

Hearing that R2-D2 had been watching over Luke since the Battle of Yavin also caused Anakin to remember the droid that had saved his life, and the lives of so many others, so many times. He had told the droid to stay with the ship on Mustafar, but never knew what became of it afterwards besides that it likely left with Kenobi, as Sidious had said the droid was not with the fighter. R2 had been Padme's present to him upon becoming a Jedi Knight, and had been loyal to Anakin throughout the Clone Wars. He even remembered taking the droid up to fight the Trade Federation so long ago.

Knowing 3PO was still operation did warm a small corner of Anakin's heart. He had allowed the droid to be returned to Solo and the Princess on Bespin, after initially ordering the droid melted down, because 3PO was still his responsibility, as his mother had said so many years ago, and had never been anything but faithful an loyal to himself and Padme.

The light in himself Anakin had been so long trying to extinguish felt like it was getting stronger the more these memories came into his mind. Luke, despite being his son, did not actually know Anakin as a person beyond the suite of Vader and Imperial propaganda. However, now Anakin was facing two people who knew him well enough that no lie he told himself would fool them.

And for some reason, Anakin could not bring himself to be truly angry with them interfering in his attempt to convert his son.

Both of them had known of his relationship with Padme, particularly Rex who had so often acted as lookout when Anakin was trying to contact his wife. He could tell that despite his rep as Vader, neither of his old subordinates actually felt fear of him currently, and both still held respect for who he had once been.

Ahsoka was less sure of the light in him than his son, but he could feel in her a deep regret regarding her choice to leave his side when she did. She was holding on to hope she could bring him back to the light, partly for Luke's sake, but also partly for her own.

Rex was more sure of the light in him, Anakin could tell, despite not being a Force sensitive. However he could also sense Rex was prepared to fight him if he had too, and had something up his sleeve. He was still the same loyal, dedicated, skilled soldier he had been bred to be.

However, none of them understood Palpatine's real power, or how much Vader had relied on the power of the Dark Side to keep himself alive and functional. Even now, Vader could feel the Dark Side reminding him that the light in him was his own weakness, and that the Light would never be able replace what he had already lost.

"You haven't lost everything, my old friend. And the Light will not abandon you, if you let it back in. I failed you as a master and a friend, and I failed Ahsoka as well by not trusting her when you did. But you never failed Ahsoka or Captain Rex as a Jedi and General, and they never failed you. Let them help you now; Sidious is not strong enough to fight all of you at once. You have a chance to make things right, with your son, your apprentice, and maybe even with Padme's soul." An ethereal voice said into his thoughts, a voice that had been visiting off and on since the first Death Star was destroyed.

Something cracked in that moment inside Anakin, and the Dark Side in him actually let out what might have been a metaphorical squeal of terror. For the first time in a very, very long time, the sound of Obi-wan Kenobi's voice in his head did not fill Anakin with rage, and a painful smile twisted his burned lips.

"You are right Kenobi; they never failed me. And Ahsoka has proven skilled enough I know I did not fail as her teacher. However, they still do not grasp the powers Palpatine commands, or what would happen if he is removed from the throne." Anakin thought towards the voice.

"Then tell them, prepare them for the fight, young one." Another voice broke in, one Anakin had not heard since the hanger on Naboo, so many years ago. Anakin started at Qui-Gon's voice, as it brought even more memories forth, and quashed the Dark Side in him even more.

"This is what the Chosen One prophecy meant, wasn't it." Anakin thought as a reply.

"Yes and no; the future is never fixed, and prophecies never go as neatly as anyone expects. But you must be willing to take the next step yourself, and make your destiny what you chose, not what is chosen for you. You can chose here and now to become the free man you never had the chance to be before in your life." Qui-Gon's voice said, as it faded out.

To be no one's servant, to be no one's slave, to be his own man, to be able to have something of the family he thought lost to him for so long...nothing the Dark Side or Palpatine had to offer could give him that.

Ahsoka could sense the turmoil in Anakin as he sat silent against the side of the cabin, and could tell that the Force presence of Obi-wan, and someone else she had never met, were communicating with her old master.

However, she also didn't miss that she could also feel the light getting stronger in Anakin, and wondered what in the world had happened to push him so far into the Dark in the first place, or what was being said to him by those spirits.

Suddenly the Togruta felt a wave of Light off Anakin, and he sat up straight, before he ran his mask over the three of them.

"Where is the recording R2-D2 gave you, Captain?" He asked Rex.

"Right here General; Commander Skywalker, it will need your thumbprint before it will play.' Rex replied, before pulling out the storage device and handing it to Luke.

When Luke pressed his thumb to it, a recording sprang to life.

At first Luke didn't know what his was looking at, then he realized it was a droid-level point of view of an old Podracer, which shifted as a small child was lifted on the shoulders of a cheering crowd. Luke realized that it had to be his father as a child, based on what Rex and Ahsoka had already told him.

Next it showed a tranquil balcony scene, with a what looked like a private marriage ceremony being preformed, with a large, lush green field and a lake in the background. Luke guessed it was his parents wedding, and noticed his father had one mechanical arm, just like himself, in the recording.

R2's recording then transitioned to showing Ahsoka cutting an unconscious Anakin out of a cockpit before the starfighter he was in crashed. Luke had to guess this was just before the Ofree incident Ahsoka and Rex mentioned in passing.

Finally, the recording showed the pained, sweating face of a woman who looked much like Leia, as she said "There's good in him. I know...I know, I know there is...still..." before she went silent and appeared to die.

Vader stood still for a moment, not even breathing, then fell to his knees as he starred at the image in the recording. Then he moved his hands up to his mask, and start pulling it off.

This caused the three Rebels to start, but only for a second. Ahsoka dived for one of the med kits, figuring that Anakin might need some supplemental oxygen very quickly, while Rex crouched down himself so he would be on Anakin's level as he took the mask off, while Luke just watched as his father pulled the pieces of the mask off, while drawing on the Light Side of the Force to keep air in his damaged lungs.

Luke started when he saw his father's scarred face and blue eyes, so like his own, as they gazed at the face of his lost and dead wife. Luke himself was rife with feelings as he saw his mother's final moments, almost missing Ahsoka slapping a forced oxygen mask over his father's mouth and nose.

"That was really reckless Anakin; but you wanted to see Padme's face again with your own eyes, didn't you." Ahsoka said from behind the armored figure.

"...she still thought there was good in me. Even at the end, even after what I did to her...I did not deserve her. She was my angel, and I destroyed her." Anakin said as a whisper through scorched vocal cords.

"What do you mean you destroyed her? What happened between you two?" Ahsoka asked, feeling uneasy.

"I...I choked her in anger when Obi-wan revealed himself as having come with her to Mustafar on her ship, though both of them tried to tell me that she didn't know he was on the ship. I believed Obi-wan had turned her against me, just as the Jedi had turned against me when they sent me to spy on the Chancellor, or as the Jedi turned against you when Ofree framed you. I was so deep in the Dark Side that I let my rage drive me to hurt my angel, and even though I felt that she was still alive when I dropped her, I must have done more damage to her than I thought. Luke, my son, if you wish to take revenge for what happened to your mother, I will not stop you." Anakin said, before lowering his head.

"No Anakin, you were right, physically you did not do any real damage besides knocking Padme unconscious. The medical droids said she was healthy when we brought her in, and said Padme simply lost the will to live, but I know it was more than that now. I left you to burn on Mustafar, and you unconsciously ended up drawing from her life-force to keep yourself alive. You didn't even know you were doing it. Had I killed you then, or brought you with us for your own medical care, she may have lived. Luke, your father was a victim of many, many manipulations by the Emperor over decades, even before he ended up in that armor, and your mother would not want you to seek revenge for her." The spirit of Obi-wan Kenobi said, appearing before them at Anakin's side, visible to everyone but Rex.

"Thank you Obi-wan." Both father and son said together. That however did cause Rex to look around, then shrug.

"I'm guessing General Kenobi is speaking with you all again. This Force stuff is always a mess, but if there is one thing I know, it's that Senator Amidala would have wanted you to try to make things right, if you want her forgiveness. And I cannot think of a better way to make it up to her than all of us dealing with Sidious and removing him from the picture. I still want my own revenge against Palpatine, for what he did to Fives and all my brothers who died for the Republic in that pointless war." Rex asked, looking his General in the eyes for the first time in decades.

Anakin looked Rex in the eyes, looked at the people who had come to save him, based all on his son's belief their was still Light in him. He had failed at so many things in his life, he had almost become defined by his failures, and Palpatine never failed to remind him of that when he disappointed or failed the Emperor.

But seeing Ahsoka and Rex, two people who had never turned on or betrayed him, and who he had not failed when they knew each other before...maybe failure didn't have to define his life.

Anakin Skywalker, formerly Darth Vader, made his choice in that moment.

"It will not be so simple as that Rex, not for the galaxy or for us, as Palpatine has powers beyond anything Maul, or Dooku, or Ventress ever had. There are things he has kept even from me. And the Republic was turned into the Empire because of the corruption of the Republic was too deep to root out any other way. You saw how they treated Ahsoka when Ofree framed her, and you know the Senate never did anything for the people beneath it unless it was for profit or power. Padme was one of the only Senator's worth respecting. If we kill Sidious, the Empire will still exist, and there are those in it who are as cruel and merciless as Sidious, just without the power to act on it to the degree he did. Your Rebellion is not powerful enough to rule the galaxy, or take it from the Empire's collective forces, even with Sidious gone. I am sure he has plans for if he should die, and I doubt they involve reestablishing the Senate or Republic. Also understand he designed this suite to be vulnerable to Force lightening and electrical attacks, and may have a code that could disable my suite's functions remotely. Without calling on the Dark Side, I may not be able to survive such an event. As soon as he realizes what has happened, he will try to kill all of us, and I would likely be the first to die. Ahsoka, Rex, if that happens, promise me you will deal with Sidious and look after my son." Anakin said, as he got to his feet and put his Vader helmet back on.

"Aye, Aye, General." Rex said and snapped to salute Anakin again.

"I promise I will do everything to pass on to him what you taught me, if that comes to pass." Ahsoka said, with a slight bow towards Anakin.

"Father, I will not let this fight be the end of you. The Force will be with us, and the Emperor's plans will fail." Luke said as he looked his father's helmet in the eye pieces.

"Do not underestimate the power of the Dark Side, my son. The Emperor may seem to be an old man, but he is a blackhole in the Dark Side of the Force. I would recommend you all take your seats; we will be landing on the Death Star shortly. I need to speak with our pilot." Anakin said as he made his way towards the hatch that would take him back to the cockpit.

"Don't kill him, Father; you will not remain in the Light if you begin spilling more innocent blood." Luke said, feeling that his father was very used to killing Imperial officers who angered, disappointed, or were simply in his father's way.

Anakin stopped, realizing he had almost instinctively been preparing to simply choke the pilot to death, and Luke could tell.

"I will not harm him permanently, but I will be modifying his memories. I also recommend you put that dead trooper somewhere out of sight before we land. Rex, put the helmet back on and put binders on Ahsoka; it's the only way I'll be able to get her or you close to the Emperor. Follow my lead when we reach the Death Star. I will have to act and seem as if I am still a part of the Dark Side once we reach the station. I cannot give Palpatine reason to think I am doing anything but delivering Luke and Ahsoka to him." The former Jedi said to the clone and his former Padawan.

"Aye, aye, Skyguy." Ahsoka said as she held out her hands to Rex, who had stuck his helmet back on and put Ashoka in the binders on his hip.

"...it's good to have you back at my side, Snips. Luke, you were right about me, and you were right to bring these two with you. May the Force be with us." The armored figure said as the hatch slid shut.

AN: I've been working on this for a few days, and still not completely satisfied with it. However I feel I did the characters and situation justice, or at least hope I did.

I rather like how, during the areas where he's wavering between the Dark and Light side, you alternate calling him "Vader" or "Anakin" depending on which direction he's leaning.

Looks like this is coming to a climax soon.

Thanks.

However, this may be leading to the climax at Endor, but I plan for this story to go much, much farther than that.

Also, it appears I've been misspelling Ahsoka's name, and had to do some editing to fix that.
