A simple explanation would had been that "the fewer cases are more severe, thus more deaths".
But as 'Covid cases' and 'Covid deaths' data has been a lie since Day One, this is not likely.
BTW - I've read that the introduction of helmets in WWI skewed statistics in an interesting way - as the steel hats decreased the fatality of hits to the nogging, their introduction increased the rate of head wounds ... hence "helmet=bad" ...
