Technology CHIP WARS (Nvidia v. Intel v. AMD v. uhhhh errrrr everybody else or whatever...)

GPU prices are so high that even if you saved up money for a GPU upgrade and have an in-demand GPU to sell, mining is pretty much the only thing that'll offset the extra expense incurred.

Right, use a discord bot for in stock notifs. You can get some good MSRP sales.

I am using two. It doesn't help when the cards aren't at MSRP once you get past the launch date. I'm not paying $400 for the shitty EVGA SKU that Gamers Nexus reviewed.

The only thing you're getting at MSRP is AMD CPUs.

Well, I hate myself for getting in on the Newegg Shuffle for this launch, but prices are real bad. The only AIB cards at MSRP are a pretty lame Asrock dual slot card and XFX's SWFT 309, which is a nice triple fan card. I dunno if the 309 will stick to MSRP, but since XFX has two more higher price SKUs, maybe it will.

Also, AMD's site crashed when the 6700 XT came up, so I can avoid buyer's remorse from dealing with Digital River, at the very least.

Intel is looking to further fill the auto industries demand for chips as major automakers like Ford and General Motors have actually had to shut down production due to the lack of chips needed for modern vehicles. Apparently unlike their competitors, Intel isn't as constrained by the chip supply issues such as those pertaining to Taiwan based suppliers such as TMSC.

They have to charge a decent amount for their latest chips, they're massive. 8 cores and yet a bigger die than their last 10 cores.

Intel is seeking 8 billion worth (or $10 billion USD) of sudsidies to build a semiconductor facility in Europe to help reduce Europes reliance on imports due to the ongoing supply shortage that is particularly affecting that region.

Chips making chips! Machines making machines! How perverse! :p

There are hundreds of companies that use AMD EPYC-based machines for their important workloads, sometimes business-critical workloads. Yet, when it comes to mission-critical work, Intel Xeon (and even Intel Itanium and mainframes) rule the world. Luckily for AMD, things have begun to change, and TSMC has announced that it is now using EPYC-based servers for its mission-critical fab control operations.

Seems that a new bitcoin (Dodgecoin, I think?) is taking off, so it looks like the GPU shortage is going to be extended.

Also seems like harddrives are becoming scarce due to bitcoin mining too.

They aren't called bitcoins, they're crypto currencies of which bitcoin is one.

And you're thinking dogecoin, which is far from new.

And the HD mine thing dropped to 50% of its previous value on launch, so not much to worry about there.

On latest Steam Hardware Survey AMD passes 30% of CPU's for first time but drops in GPU's slightly, still at around 16%.

Of course, some of these results do need to be taken with a grain of salt. The Steam hardware survey may not be taken by every user and can't be completely representative. Still, it provides an idea of trends.

Not that many Steam users are quick to adopt the latest hardware. The most popular GPU on the platform is the GeForce GTX 1060, according to the survey, and 1% of Steam users are somehow continuing to get by with CPUs featuring clock speeds lower than 1.4 GHz. It takes a while for the survey results change much.

A few months ago, I built a rig with the following specs:
  • Ryzen 9 5900X
  • GeForce RTX 3090 FE
  • 128 GB Corsair Dominator DDR4-3200 RAM
  • Asus ROG Strix X570E
  • All SSD storage
It's all housed in a Fractal Design Define 7 Compact. It replaces my huge water-cooled uber-tower from 2017 and basically stomps its ass, performance-wise. I had a huge Kerbal Space Program obsession recently, and that game's physics only allow one CPU thread per object, so single-threaded performance is a big deal if you wanna keep the game from lagging. The Ryzen 9 5900X stomps the SHIT out of the i7-6950X I was using before. Intel had better watch out, because AMD is back in fucking town.

You'll need a nice and powerful power supply for that 3090 and I hope to god you got one with decent VRAM cooling on the back otherwise it will die in a few months.
