DCEU: DC Cinematic Universe Thread

Didn't see one of these made so, here it is. A Discussion thread for all of those disparate DC Cinematic Universe Movies... though the Cinematic Universe is so scattered right now it might be hard for a Normie to even know what's part of the Cinematic Universe and not.

AND to start off discussion...

Apparently the star of the upcoming Black Adam movie, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, told an interviewer that he intends and that the entire point of the Cinematic Universe at this point is to get his Black Adam character to fight Superman who presumably will still be portrayed by Henry Cavill, despite reports to the contrary.

Bounding Into Comics said:
No less surprising is why the film incorporates Superman at all. The two are going to fight. Black Adam himself, Dwayne Johnson, admitted as much to CinemaBlend in the continuing leadup to his starring turn as the antihero’s premiere.

He, The Rock, says he definitely, unequivocally “intends to make a movie where Black Adam fights [Superman].”

“Absolutely. That is the whole point of this, man,” he answered quite directly and clearly. “I have been saying for some time, there’s a new era in the DC Universe that’s about to begin.”

Saw Black Adam and it was pretty above average overall I guess? Nothing great or amazing or profound. The film actually had a fair bit of bloat and a lot of characters and things going on and the like which really didn't do the film that much justice. There was also a really weird spot three quarters the way into the film where it really felt like it ran out of steam and then decided to chug into more film for another half an hour or forty five minutes or so.

Everyone did a good job acting and the special effects looked nice, as it is with all Superhero movies (well almost all of them) nowadays. But there were too many characters. And the tone of the film was all over the place sometimes. Comedic and sad and grim and serious and lighthearted interchangably. It was almost borderline jarring. And while the acting and characters were fine... they could've easily cut out several of the characters as well and it probably would've been a more smooth and slick film. Some of them were just absolutely wasted in this films screentime.

There was a climatic battle (there are several climatic battles in this movie) which was just cringe to me, and it could've been excised as well or just done... far, far better.

Black Adam himself was cool and I liked him and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is likable. So was Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate and Daniel Kaluya Aldis Hodge as Hawkman. Everyone else was good too but they also were kinda ancillary characters to whatever story they were trying to tell.

Presenting Black Adam as a Superman level antihero and his interesting moral code.... ehhhh they tried. I don't feel it landed well or was presented that well either. It led to some interesting scenes and discussions but for the most part, they didn't really go into depth on Black Adam's morals and ethics, they just unfortunately scratched the surface which was too bad.

To this films credit, there was a legitimately surprisingly well done SUBVERSION as well. Plus one really strong moment of emotional resonance that gave me feels all over. Another highlight of the film was I like how it presented the magic. I like how Dr. Fate operated a fair bit more then Dr. Strange's magic using (for the most part) in the MCU films. It reminded me of how Dr. Strange seemed to have a more eclectic power set in Avengers: Infinity War instead of just throwing portals around or whatever like in his own films.

We also need to stop front loading films with narrative openings. Sometimes I feel... you can just present the scene without the excessive voiceover and people will actually understand it.

Overall... if your slightly interested in superhero movies, I'd recommend giving it a watch. It's not bad. It's just above average. But it was entertaining... and in a far more interesting way then the latest MCU film that was released, Thor: Love & Thunder.

Well a month in and the Snyderverse is in revolt and #FireJamesGunn is trending over Henry Cavill's Black Adam media blitz bragged showing his return as Superman.

Henry Cavill got axed because Gunn apparently wants a soft reboot with a younger actor. Likely one more youthful, nubile and ripe.

Currently one of the fifty petitions or so calling for the return of Henry Cavill and/or the firing of James Gunn.

Honestly a reboot probably would be best for the DCCU, it's just that I doubt James Gunn is a good one to do it. My question is, where are the people who wrote for Batman: The Animated Series and the Justice League cartoon?

Last I saw of Bruce Timm he was still making DC animated movies, that was 2017. He's in his mid-60s now though, he may just not have another megacrossover universe in him.

It appears that the scenes with Henry Cavill Superman and Gal Gadot Wonder Woman have been cut from the upcoming release of the 2023 Flash movie for the DC Cinematic Universe.

Who remains you might ask that might be considered a bit more controversial?

EZRA MILLER's FLASH is still in the Flash movie. :ROFLMAO:

"We're gonna do a big make-over to make the DC cinematic universe better so people will love it!"

"That's desperately needed! What are your plans?"

"First, we get rid of Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot -- two people that absolutely everybody wants to look at for extended periods of time -- and then we release a film starring a known criminal and sexual deviant."

"BRILLIANT!"

...Never change, Warner Bros. Never change.

Honestly the sooner Hollywood crashes and all of those IPs become abandonware the better. Wannabe Babylon has kept America's mythology hostage for far FAR too long.

Okay this is a bit jaw-dropping.

Dude apparently wrote and submitted a Batman story 32 years ago. DC Comics rejected it, but he claims Warner's lifted the entire story whole-hog for the latest Batman movie, so he's suing.

So far pretty samey. Movies get sued by writers claiming somebody ripped their plot all the time. This basically happens to every movie ever made, there's always somebody who threw down a similar story at some point and it's typically dead-easy for a studio to swat it down, either because the similarities are just genre conventions or because the studio can reasonably say the director hadn't seen that script. Where it gets weird is the allegations that Warner is pushing DC comics to countersue him for copyright violations for submitting a story to them 32 years ago.

The actual lawsuit hasn't been filed yet so this could be bogus. Honestly, it seems like it should be. If Warner actually succeeded in that suit, it would basically destroy the entire freelance industry. Now granted, Hollywood has been moving steadily away from that model for years now, but it's still a going thing and the idea that you could face a half-million dollar lawsuit for submitting a script to a comic company... one that had the policy of buying such scripts... is just laughable.

It's just... Warner has basically been mag-dumping into their own foot for years now so I wonder if it could be true. We'll see as this develops.

Black Adam is dead.

It's nice how Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (I believe sincerely) was selling the movie as stating his character could go up against Henry Cavill Superman for months leading up to the Black Adam before literally a month later Henry Cavill getting dumpstered and now The Rock and his own ideas for the DCEU a few weeks later.

I admire Warner Bros for being so ruthless as to milk their talents apparent passion for a project for every penny of marketing goodness and still getting them to thank the studio for the privilege of getting canned.

Though I mean, the talent was pretty well compensated so there's that. :p

Flurry of announcements regarding DC Comics Adapted properties.

James Gunn announced ten different movies and TV shows in the pipeline recently.

First it confirms no Henry Cavill Superman, no third Wonder Woman movie, no continuation of Black Adam etc etc etc. Four already announced (and in some cases soon to be released) films are going to come out in the coming years. These include the new Shazam movie, the Flash movie, Blue Beetle and the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But apparently none of these will be part of the new DCU.

First is the movie Superman Legacy which should come out July 11th, 2025 and will reboot the franchise.

Next is The Authority based on the Mark Millar comic book series and kinda helped start the whole modern 'dark and edgy' superhero phase we are currently in.

Then the Batman movie 'The Brave and the Bold' which in the comics was based on the Bat-Family, specifically this will introduce a new Batman (separate from all previous... and current film Batmans) and involve his biological son Damien Wayne who will apparently be taking up the Robin mantle in this film.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will also be a live action film based on Tom King's Supergirl run in comics just last year.

Swamp Thing, another theatrical release.

Creature Commandos which is an animated series that will show on HBO Max and feature classic movie monsters fighting Nazis in World War Two apparently.

Waller, a TV series based on Amanda Waller, as portrayed by Viola Davis in several DC movies already.

Lanterns, an HBO Max TV show that will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart as the titular "Space Cops" in a series that they describer as less space opera and more like 'True Detective' only extra-terrestrial apparently.

THEN there's Paradise Lost, which will be an HBO Max series about the Amazons of Paradise Island.

Oh and last (and least) a Booster Gold show on HBO Max as well.

Second, apparently Warner Bros. will be using an "Elseworlds" style branding for some of the movies that won't take place in the DCU proper which is something they've taken from the comics.

Thus both The Batman Part II will be released on October 3rd, 2025. Related to this is a Penguin TV spinoff that will star Colin Farrell. Also the Joker sequel Joker: Folie à Deux has been announced along with a 'Black Superman' project helmed by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

lol Apparently Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was really pushing the DCEU being centered on Henry Cavill Superman and his Black Adam character to the point he snubbed the Shazam cast from being even mentioned in the Black Adam film even though the two characters are basically rivals in the comics.

Zachary Levi, who obviously portrays Shazam, posted a news article snippet saying just that on his Instagram. :sneaky:

I will say having seen Shazam 2 recently I think I did like it more then Black Adam.

The DCEU is dead yes. The new Flash movie will serve as a retcon.

James Gunn and whatever the other guys name is said they're retconning the old Cinematic Universe and creating a new one. I posted the flurry of stuff they are planning on releasing in the coming years in theaters and on HBO Max.

Something called Superman: Legacy will reboot the cinematic universe franchise sometime in mid-2025.

So instead of the DC "Extended" Universe, we're getting the "DC Universe."

So what will be the new acronym for DC live action movie discussions lol.

Post Retcon DCEU
