DCEU: DC Cinematic Universe Thread

The DCEU is dead yes. The new Flash movie will serve as a retcon.

James Gunn and whatever the other guys name is said they're retconning the old Cinematic Universe and creating a new one. I posted the flurry of stuff they are planning on releasing in the coming years in theaters and on HBO Max.

Something called Superman: Legacy will reboot the cinematic universe franchise sometime in mid-2025.

So instead of the DC "Extended" Universe, we're getting the "DC Universe."

At this point I'm just kind of getting tired of shared universes. Marvel has burned me out on them, DC has repeatedly shown they have bleep-all idea on how to even develop one which oddly kind of mirrors their respective comics post Crisis on Infinite earths now that I think about it. DC rebooting/tinkering/course correcting through Crisis after Zero hero and New 52.

Really I just want to watch an entertaining movie about Batman or Superman and not have to worry on seeing a half dozen other movies which setup/affect/lead into the one I'm watching.

Well the main reason I brought up 'The Rock' thing wasn't so much about how lol fail the DCEU is, which is well known and chronicled :p but I was kinda surprised and I guess disappointed that Dwayne Johnson apparently wasn't just egotistical, but such a narcissist as well.

Like, the OP of this thread was about how Dwayne Johnson wanted to make the DCEU his new star vehicle where his Black Adam would fight Henry Cavill's Superman and I was just wondering in the back of my mind... why wasn't Shazam/Zachary Levi involved in any of this pre-marketing blitz that The Rock was pushing.

Apparently it was because The Rock was such an egoist he wanted nothing to do with the people involved with the Shazam film including Zachary Levi and the Director. And that stood out to me as just being both petty and surprising because while The Rock is a creature of Hollywood now, I never really heard much controversy about him being a petty or smug asshole (beyond his spat with Vin Diesel regarding the Fast & Furious franchise) so that seemed to stand out to me.

Guess it's just something that I'll keep in mind for the future, and wanted to share. Seemed more of a personal interest story as much as it is one on the DCEU/DCU.

A trailer for Blue Beetle has been released. I keep forgetting that this is a thing that exists.

There's some nice bits but overall, I feel like there's some really cringe moments in this film. Doesn't really pique my interest all that much.

Maybe it should go the way of Batwoman and just be a tax writeoff. :p

It's planned release is August 18th, 2023.

For myself at least, the most interesting aspect to Blue Beetle was his attribute of, wildly different, legacy characters and the wacky behind the scenes history which brought that about by pingponging him from comic book company to comic book company.

I can't say the trailer is bad per say but watching it I just kind of got the impression of "teenage ironman" with a character likely not nearly as fun as Tony Stark.

Yeah I liked some bits of it but the 'Father' character I'm assuming. I think he has painted fingernails and kinda acts effeminate. I know I just dunked on Critical Drinker for being too sensitive on woke shit in regards to the Dungeons & Dragons movie, but there has been a strong theme with major Hollywood studios in regards to intentionally injecting large amounts of gayness into media targeting us brown people to make us more Gay. So yeah, my main issue with the trailer I suppose is that he seems to of been raised by a proud LatinX family as opposed to anything I find relatable.

But yeah the trailer does seem kinda derivative. Like Shazam also kinda tread over this territory pretty well.

Didn't even notice the painted fingernails part. xD For myself I kind of assumed the effeminate vibe I got off of him was just part of the Left's war on masculinity in general where men tend to be written as women-lite and are never allowed to really "grow up". But I'll admit your viewpoint makes a lot of sense as well.

Yeah and it could be that his quirks aren't related to gayness or effeminacy at all. There's other explanations after all but, I will retain healthy skepticism until informed otherwise. :p

Kind of a good video that encapsulated a lot of my thoughts regarding Dwayne Johnson, Black Adam and Shazam.

I kinda agree. 'The Rock' did seem to kind of sink not just his own movie, but Shazam: Fury of the Gods and the ol' DCEU in general. Black Adam and Shazam should've shared the screen together instead of the two somewhat emptier films we did get. A film with them both might've had more success and maybe even keep the DCEU going with some momentum.

But The Rock wanted his own movie and a superhero franchise centered around him and him fighting Superman.

Flash is opening to lower cinema scores then even Black Adam and Shazam 2. Apparently it got an unusually low 'B' grade which makes it comparable to stunning films like Ant-Man: Quantumania and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justass.

More importantly it's trending to have an opening box office weekend lower then both Black Adam and Shazam 2 as well.

Supposedly the movie is better then those films but the fancy new James Gunn ending is crap.

Going to see Flash today. Or is it The Flash?

I wasn't going to because Ezra Miller is a dirtbag but one of my friends is buying a ticket for me and says I'll like it. And gave me the whole spiel of how its more then Ezra Miller, there's a whole cast and crew and production team and theaters (he's a manager at the theater) and I was thinking sure, but I kinda want them all to fail except the theater? But then I was like... the movie is already bombing so... anyways. Watching it.

Will give a FULL REPORT on it... unless I don't. The theater is almost empty but looking at the seating map some idiots decided to sit near where I'm sitting in the totally empty theater... FFS.

Saw Flash.

It was okay. If you thought Ezra Miller's Flash was annoying in previous movies... well don't worry, he's even more annoying in this film. Then... you get TWO Ezra Miller's in the movie and they actually don't just double the annoyance factor, but work off of each other to maximize their annoyance factor. Now this isn't a fault of Ezra Miller necessarily but the awkward script and humor that they forcefed the Ezra Miller(s) in this film. Now the Ezra Miller annoyance factor is an annoyance throughout the film but towards the last half of the movie it does taper off a bit as they seem to reconcile with their inherent obnoxiousnesses.

The other plus is that the Ezra Miller(s) are compelled to share screentime with people who aren't Ezra Miller which improves things significantly. Michael Keaton/Batman was neat. The actress who portrayed Supergirl (*searches*) Sasha Calle actually did a good job and her iteration of Supergirl was pretty good. Sadly with most of the movie focusing on Ezra Miller(s) Flash(s) there isn't a real good chance to flesh out the storylines of these two supporting characters.

The first half of the film was quite uninteresting to me while the second half, despite being of higher quality, was still pretty uneven in overall quality and interest factor. The CGI did in fact look quite dated in many respects and while some of the Flash doing Speedforce things was neat, other times it was just okay. The epic final battle was alright.... Zack Snyder did it better. Like with many Hollywood movies, I wish they would map out the big epic climatic battles better instead of the CGI chaos we normally get.

There were actually some legitimate emotional beats in the film as well, but also plenty of emotional narm as well. Same with the humor, I did actually chuckle aloud a few times, but a lot of the humor seemed to be an inferior imitation of MCU humor and just didn't land. Ezra Miller(s), poor annoying character and script aside, did okay. He certainly didn't turn in a good enough performance to make me forget he was a dirtbag.

The main drawback of the film was the plot. And it's the main reason I didn't like Across the Spiderverse either. I was mostly on board with the storyline here involving the time travel and alternate timelines etc but towards the end of the film it introduced the same plot device I loathed Across the Spiderverse for. What the MCU coins as an Absolute Point. I just can't... it feels so lazy and contrived to manufacture a storylines drama. That might just be more of a me problem however.

Flash was entertaining... but very midrange in quality overall.

I'm wanting to make a youtube video on this myself, but the thing that drives me nuts the most about Absolute points/Canon events is that they have completely contradicted the way the multiverse has been portrayed in the comics they are based off of...not to mention they are only a thing for that particular story and then never mentioned again. The absolute point was just an excuse to give Dr. Strange a Villian/Anti-Hero backstory and then never mentioned again. Not to mention if certain heroes have to exist and have to go through certain plots points in order for the universe not to fall apart then what about all the universes where those heroes DON'T exist or the universe was specifically created from the question of "What if X cannon event didn't happen. I'll hold out a little for ASV only because it's half a movie and I'm still waiting for the other half, but yeah it's a plot point that makes for great meta commentary but falls apart with any sort of meta knowledge and/or greater scrutiny.

Didn't see one of these made so, here it is. A Discussion thread for all of those disparate DC Cinematic Universe Movies... though the Cinematic Universe is so scattered right now it might be hard for a Normie to even know what's part of the Cinematic Universe and not.

AND to start off discussion...

Apparently the star of the upcoming Black Adam movie, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, told an interviewer that he intends and that the entire point of the Cinematic Universe at this point is to get his Black Adam character to fight Superman who presumably will still be portrayed by Henry Cavill, despite reports to the contrary.

That explains a lot.

Flash projected to lose $150 million and suffers a yuge drop of over 70% drop from it's opening.

However in more good news the lack of success of Flash my ight result in Kevin Smiths live action cinematic treatment of Batman Beyond to never come to fruition. So that's nice.

Feel bad that Eliot Page or Jazz Jennings will never be able to portray Terry McGinnis onscreen though.

So, they are doing a DC/Suicide Squad isekai with Harley and the Joker, it seems.
