A View on the Ice Part 1

Michal sat there shivered and sneezed in their little court room as the man was brought before him he glared at the wretched man he had been one of their number who had sold his soul to the Dragon and had collaborated with the guard and sold out many amongst the prisoners the had been how Emil had met his end. They would not have known except for young Leopold who had been one of the watchers for this sort of thing.

"The court has heard your evidence against you," Michal said, "as a representative of the Armia Krajow I hereby sentence you death for the act of high treason against the people of Nowa Warszawa Sergeant Rowecki escort him out of the court and execute the sentence."

"Yes sir," said the sort man with the heavily scarred face and motioned to two of the burly men.

The man kicked and screamed as he was dragged out by the men and Rowecki had his shiv in hand.

Michal sighed and looked to the other two members of the court one a young woman who face was so cold it might have been carved of ice for how cold she looked and would have been called striking if her nose was not missing due to frostbite. The other man was an old man bent with age but his eyes were cunning Old Leopold was one of the old mayors who had stood against the Dracs and paid for it in blood and his family and the Dracs seeing no threat or use for the man had tossed him in a cell.

Misha and Old Leopold spoke with authority for a lot of people and there was him he was one of the volunteers of the Armia Krajow and leader of his small platoon who had volunteered to get taken and join the prison convoy to find where the bastard dracs were taking their people.

They had found hell in this place at first several of his Platoon had died even though they were inured to the conditions they still suffered and did what they could to gather intelligence on the place they were in. To have people fighting and fighting so well against the Dracs if the rumours the had heard from several careless camp guards they doing well if they were to be believed.

"That is the last traitor for the day," Michal said looking at Misha and Old Leopold, "We should call the session today tomorrow we have to deal with more."

Old Leopold nodded, "How is that snake you found," the old man asked a cold smile on his face.

Michal snorted, "We have him kept in the same 'luxury' we enjoyed in the desert, he curses and says the Dragon will burn us but Corporal Pilecki is showing him that will not be the case."

"Good," said Misha, "Bastards must pay I have spoken with the others and we are searching for the rest they will not hide."

"Yes they will pay," Michal said, "any way we have shelter and food we can hold out until the people of this system come to us."

"At least we don't lack for water," Misha said with a chuckle, "Tell me Michal who goes the training of the militia?"

"About as can be expected they are a small force we only have weapons we can improvise," He said, "we can keep the peace but if anyone lands with any hardware we cannot do anything, however, the members of the Armia Krajow we will continue to do our duty whatever the cost. Zrzeszenie Wolność i Niezawisłość dla Nowa Warszawa."

"Zrzeszenie Wolność i Niezawisłość dla Nowa Warszawa," they both replied.

He stood, "I'm going to check the training of the militia under Pavel see if any need any motivation and walk the perimeter."

Misha stood, "I will tag along it is on the way to the women hospital."

He grimaced a lot of those women were psychological case's in there as well as the horrors of this planet the Drac soldiers were animals.

"I'm going to rest my old bones," Leopold said, "then I may walk to the cooks and get some soup."

"Enjoy your soup old man see you tomorrow," Michal said and waved as they left.

Michal and Misha put on their thick coats and walked outside.

(More than pays for itself next turn)

Technically goes into debt, but the thing doing that ensures next turn will be less bad.

Apparently there's some confusion about the differences in this plan - the differences came when Sunhawk pointed out Culture had changed a bit. It now gives +1% tax rate next turn, so I thought I'd gamble on adding it in the diplomatic culture action slot. That's the only difference between the two.

As mentioned, I strongly believe we should reduce our military spending for the next few turns -- the DCMS won't be returning in the short term, and now that we have breathing room we need to develop our economy and infrastructure. We're not going to be using those ASFs -- better to spend the money on dropships so we can more easily move between continents & colonies & orbital stations. Maximize our Research and Interior spending now, and leave Military for later.

So with the development of a lot of star league techs coming up has the GM said what kind of stuff can be developed on our own? I know battletech is more of a "hard" scifi(disregarding magic mech muscles and kf stuff) but I guess moving out of 80's analog to more digital computing is a believable thing to do. Anti-gravity tech is a favorite of mine and imagining the racing league with true hovercraft is fun plus it adds a whole new dynamic to ship design.

Well, what we know is we'll eventually be getting clan tech, that's probably the next step up the tech tree (after we get through the everything that started with the bunker). After that... no idea, not sure if that's even been considered.

A View on the Ice Part 2

They walked through the Ice wrapped up against the cold as they made their way through the blocky building the ice crunching beneath their feet. They passed the others they were all a mixed batch but all had been dragged her by the damned Dragon.

"Michal?" Misha asked.

"Yes?" Michal said looking at her with the crude scarf around her face.

"What do you think the people of this system are like," Misha said, "according to the stories the Old Land was full of many different people who do you think they were."

"I have no idea," Michal said, "But if they give the Dracs pause then they must be strong."

"Yes," Misha said, "Though given what I heard of this treaty and the lack of a Jumpship they won't be able to do anything for Nowa Warszawa."

"For now," Michal said, "Though the future holds promise at the very least."

"Yes," Misha said they walked on in silence and then she asked, "what did you do before the Dracs came?"

He paused that took him by surprised they had worked together in the camp but she had never asked about his life before in the camp you worked together but you did not dig too deep because you could die at any time or be taken by the Drac officers at any time.

"I taught elementary school," he said after a pause, "I did my time in the Wojska Lądowe and then left and became a teacher though I was a reservist. When the Dracs came I watched it all burn and have no idea how I got away."

He paused remembering the dark days of the invasion seeing his brothers and sisters in arms slaughtered by the Drac mechs he shook his head he still had no idea how he survived.

"What about you?" Michal asked.

He eyes and face darkened, "I was a student studying history I joined a volunteer battalion but was taken early on by the Dracs one of their 'officers' took a liking to me. I refused he forced me repeatedly afterwards, he died a week later in an Armia Krajowa IED and I got sent here."

They walked in silence to the intersection he the reached out and hugged her, "You are not alone Misha."

She nodded and they split heading to their respective destinations.

The next day they recived word from Griffins Roost.

System Map, updated to represent the state of affairs as of Turn 28 of the quest.

Both Griffin IV and Griffin V are marked partially in red, as neither has been visited, explored and secured by royal forces yet, and Sarah is not omniscient.

Sarah is able to provide to you an itemized list of critically needed relief supplies, mostly medicine, food, and warm clothing. USS Defiant is assigned to escort USS Harris and the still unnamed Confederate-class dropship from the 332nd cache.

You idly think you should correct that…

[] Write-In name for Confederate, QM reserves right to veto any suggestion

Jake accompanies the expedition on-board the USS Harris, taking a small diplomatic staff from Isoroku, although your Foreign Minister pointed out quite sensibly that having an ethnic Japanese representative make contact might be… contraindicated.

Instead there is a recorded greeting from yourself, introducing Jake as your ambassador plenipotentiary for the purpose of coordinating assistance to the ‘former victims of Drac aggression’. Jake himself has been instructed to facilitate the future integration of the population into the kingdom.

Initial contact is surprisingly cordial, Jake speaks fluent Polish and seems to get along with the leadership of the refugees surprisingly well. This is most certainly a case of a round peg being put in a round hole, and thankfully Willis is willing to handle the patting you on the back so you don’t have to risk putting your arm out.

This sets the pattern for the next several months. Your dropships shuttle back and forth between Griffin’s Roost and Griffin V, carrying needed supplies and construction materials with them on the outbound legs. On the first such cycle a team from your Intelligence Agency accompanies the shipment, and on the trip back you have several dozen Kuritan agents to interrogate. Turns out that none of the ISF plants spoke Polish after all.

Arrogant bastards.

The counterintel teams are still at work, of course, just because the ‘hint’ had panned out didn’t preclude the possibility that more sneaky snakes weren’t still present.

Back at home the infrastructure work on Pollux has been completed, giving a badly needed shot in the arm to the economy. The continent is now well and truly open and projects like building new cities and such can easily commence, not to mention new factories.

On that note, the new factory for the Trooper battlemech has been completed. And completed incredibly well indeed. The assembly lines are laid out well and the contractors worked so quickly that the factory has been rated at level 2 immediately, able to build 8 mechs a year instead of merely 4.

The new ASFs are in service, beefing up your already formidable aerospace force and giving you somewhat more of a buffer against the Dracs. Depending on how well talks go with the people on Griffin V you might soon want to dispatch some of them there to provide cover against any Drac aggression.

USS Enterprise completes its survey mission of Phoenix. Multiple mineral deposits have been located in the mountains that ring the central desert. In addition the sheer massive extent of the germanium deposit at the center of that ultra-arid frozen wasteland has been mapped… based on that deposit alone you’ll probably never run out of the stuff.

The concert goes extremely well, with a heavy metal theme that features songs about historical Polish themes. A great deal of money is raised, pretty much covering all of the expenses for providing humanitarian relief to the left behind population.

On the other hand the copyright and classification issues related to the new toys are still not fully resolved, although there has been progress with the designers finally agreeing to remove certain details from the toys and the companies in question being willing to at least talk again. Maybe next year?

Coming from the research labs comes some extremely good news. The R&D teams have achieved a massive breakthrough on both the enhanced extended range PPC and the extra-light fusion core. The work on the XLFE core has gone so exceptionally well that the scientists have some ideas on how to make the shielding surrounding the core itself less bulky, although that is for further in the future.

The team working on Target Acquisition Gear has also reported a breakthrough, although they did lose the test sample in the process. With that breakthrough they have also developed a semi-guided LRM to take advantage of the TAG system.

In addition the Medical School research teams have come up with some effective therapies to extend lifespans and boost the quality of life in one's older years. These therapies have had some interesting knock-on effects for cancer research.

However there is one dark spot in the research lights.

A missing close paren.

That’s it.

A missing close paren.

And you very nearly had a disaster leading to a Kessler Cascade.

A single bloody missing close paren.

If it wasn’t for Sarah and some extremely alert monitoring teams that missing close paren would have resulted in all of the orbital survey satellites attempting to navigate to the exact same orbit at the same time, resulting in total chaos.

The programmers were able to fix it, and the issue is traced to a legacy bug that dated back to the Star League era which had somehow propagated into the navigation software for the survey satellites. This particular bug only showed up under an extreme edge case condition, which inadvertently occurred when the execute command had been given for the orbital survey.
