In my mind, their practice of slavery -- even a limited form thereof -- absolutely rules out the Optimate as a trusted ally. However, they may be useful as an ally of convenience in the short term, and their practice of slavery is mild enough that I don't feel it calls for *immediate* liberation.

To be fair if we're clever we can always go and play the you must free your slaves or we won't help you game when the Dracs inevitably go after them. Or support a bunch of politicians in favor of ending slavery.

If we had no other problems and jump-capable military ready to go, I'd be much more favorably inclined towards immediate liberation. I don't consider pre-emptive war to be morally wrong when it comes to a slave nation.

But we're in a position of forced pragmatism, and short-term ally of convenience is an acceptable compromise under the circumstances.

To be blunt once we deal with the local Dracs and the Amaris Remnants...welp the Opimate had better have gotten rid of slavery in both de jure and de facto or we'll be sending in quite the force to...persuade them to do so. Oh and due to the bother and expense of having to do so we'll be annexing the place.

In a couple decades though we can make them change if we're so inclined
Yes, but why should we? Because they internally practice something we don't like, but practically doesn't affect us? Are we going to intervene with every society we come across that does one or two things which just happen to annoy us? Because, if we take a look at RL, oh boy is that going to bog us down and make things worse, not better...

For most things we don't like, I'm perfectly willing to just say it's their world. Slavery, though, I regard as a fundamental evil which must be stamped out. Not at all costs, but as a priority second only to the well being of our own people.

Going to have to drop interior bureaucracy expansion for this, but I really don't want the events from not doing this.

Given there's now discussions about foreign trade, good idea to set up a system to manage it.

I am not sure how the numbers are going to look after this, but they are necesary, and we can go and be more frugal the next year or something.

As for the Optimates... ultimately if we go as friends we might be able to convince them to change, not of simple ideology, perish the thought, but out of a necessity argument, do outreach to young patricians, make them come here for their education and try to get some reformist ideals into their culture.
the military solution, where it an option atm, would be rather destrcuctive and from reports they aren't doing the chatel slavery thing, so we would be just destroying their infrastructure, create a lot of issues therein and might get a population that despises us because we made things worse

So, careful, slowly, and diplomatically seems to be the key words here.
Mind, the issue is going to be to sell this to the people
