End of an era: MiG and Sukhoi to merge

MiG and Sukhoi Design Bureaus to merge.

As aircraft development gets ever more expensive, more and more players will drop out of the game. We've seen it on this side of the Atlantic with the merging of Northrop and Grumman and McDonnel and Douglas and Boeing and a bunch of other aircraft companies that I'm forgetting. Now it seems like the Russians are doing it too.

Sad to see this happen. It's like in the automobile industry, where dozens of car manufacturers consolidated into the Big Three, and then the Big Three slowly became bland and interchangeable megacorps. We're told that it's the inevitable result of market forces, but sometimes I wonder if those market forces can't push in the opposite direction.

I mean, the way it works in life.
The US has merged a lot of what they have, but still have major competitors

As far as I can tell, they are unifying the production side of the business, the Design Bureaus will stay separate.

Cost of planes is rising. There is joke, then in 2100 planes would be so expensive, that USA would have only one - Navy would use it one week,USAAF next. And poor Marines only on New Year.

This was attempted couple of times so far, I guess it's really happening this time. I don't think it will be good for Russians though, MiG leadership still has considerable political clout and will use it to get an upper hand over Sukhoi.

When was the last time MiG produced a new plane?

As far as I can remember, the more recent and advanced Russian designs have been Sukhoi products.

They just did upgrades of MiG-29 and 31, there were also considerable concerns with their quality control.
