It's a catch 22 sadly, if you don't gatekeep those who replace you will or the fandom deludes and dissolves but if you do gatekeep you risk stagnating inbreeding and whithering away.

It is a catch 22, but these days the former is more worrying then the later. Plus I do think option 1 is somewhat overhyped.
