General Computer Advice

I'm getting tired of starting a new thread for every question I have about computers, so this is my new catch-all thread.

This particular time, I could use recommendations on LED monitors. I'm not looking for anything huge, or curved, just something basic that's 20" - 24". Something that uses HDMI or Digital Port.

I honestly don't know much of anything about that. All I know is that I've been pretty happy so far with the Dell E207WFPc LCD monitors that I've had since 2007 or so, but they're starting to break, and while I could just get the same kind of monitors again, I figure that if I'm spending the money I might as well get some new monitors instead of nearly 20 year old refurbished ones, and maybe even upgrade just a bit.

I was kind of thinking of this monitor or maybe this one

People could threadmark their questions to make it easier to find answers if this becomes another mega thread. ;)

I would avoid Asus. The tech is good, but if anything goes wrong, you're gunna have some trouble. Their RMA process and communication is notoriously bad. It's looking like you're in the price range of $100-$150? OR maybe $200 max?

This AOC monitor meets or exceeds those monitors:

I mean, my MB is ASUS. And, yeah, I'd rather have something in the $100-$200 range, especially since I want two of them. I'll look into your suggestion, though, since it's like $99 and might be just as good for all I know.

For the longest time, cheapo Dell monitors were some of the best you could get. I’m not sure if this is still true, but it’s worth looking into. You can also get 4K panels from them for $200.

So I'm using Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection, and it keeps identifying files as threats which are not threats. I have tried adding these files to the excluded list in the settings, but it keeps flagging these files anyway. Does anyone know of a way to get it to knock this shit off?

Does anyone know a good alternative to Adobe for creating and editing PDF files?

I actually have a legal copy I purchased years ago as a university student, but it seems to have stopped working properly, so I'm guessing the company snuck some kind of an "update" in to try to encourage me to purchase their latest subscription software. Basically I need something that can combine multiple PDFs into one single file, and allow me to edit existing files by getting rid of pages or switching the order of pages.

That sounds more like an Illustrator alternate. I was looking for something like Adobe Professional that lets me combine multiple PDF files into one, or edit an existing PDF file by removing pages and/or changing the order of pages. I also used to be able to make PDFs out of Word files or image files. So something like that.

I'm getting kind of frustrated with canned air dusters, and I'm contemplating getting a small (2 or 3 gallon) air compressor to clean my computers out with. Has anyone ever done that before, and what would you set the regulator to so as not to cause damage?

I haven't used anything that powerful before but I would recommend against it. It could loosen something fragile.

Try something smaller. This is one I purchased a long time ago from Amazon .not available now but I still use it at work.

It works so long as you don't go to high on the pressure (say, 20-30 psi). Just make sure to immobilize the fans when you dust, as them being driven by air can wear them out.

Microsoft defender seems to work good for me as a general catch all antivirus spyware program.
If you are looking for something you need to pay for but have free version... I've used Avast, AVG (been years).
I mainly rely on Microsoft defender.

Avoid Norton like the plague.

In my opinion, these days 27" is a better 'regular' monitor size. Current day monitors have much smaller bezels such that my modern 27" is pretty much the same physical size as my ten year old 24" monitors.
