General Introductions Thread

Terthna

Professional Lurker
Hello; not sure if anyone recognizes me, seeing as, after six years of being an active member, I stopped posting on SB (as well as other forums like QQ) back in late 2018. I figured a thread like this where people can introduce themselves, and share stories about what led them to joining this forum, or their lives in general, would be a good idea.

If anyone does remember me, it’s probably first from the old Gamergate thread on SB; I was something of a regular there, and my posts in that thread represented the lion’s share of my early history on SB. Though I’ve posted before, during, and since everywhere from Games & Gaming, to the Anime Forum, to Creative Writing, to even Whitehall a couple times. Only a couple, mind you; I saw the writing on the wall for where that sub-forum was going even before the 2016 election, which ended up driving nearly everyone who posted there regularly off the deep end. I remember several posters I used to respect counted among them.

Anyways, I ended up finding out about this forum when someone brought it up over on Digital Wild West; a forum created by THASF (there known as Train Dodger) with the intent of being a return to the old days of the internet, when people could say just about anything. Honestly, it was the PM debacle over on SB that got me to start paying attention to the various communities again, and I was not a fan of what I saw. QQ shut down discussion of it almost immediately; and while I understand why, it still frustrated me to see the only forum that didn't either condemn every single member of the PM as evil, or refused to allow discussion of it, was the veritable ghost town of DWW.

Ironically, it was an argument over politics on that forum that got me to go back to my lurking ways for over half a year; long story short, I’m not the most skilled debater in the best of times, and I lost my temper. At that point, considering that this was not the first time something like that had happened, and incidents like that were only getting more and more frequent despite the multiple month long breaks I’d taken to try and clear my head, I decided it might be best to just go back to being a lurker. Fast forward to now, and I think The Sietch might be a decent place to try and start again.

I still get angry with people I don’t agree with, and I still care a lot more about what other people think of me than I should; but, maybe I can still improve. That’s just my story though; feel free to share your own.

@Terthna I remember you. Quarelled a lot over Manning, got along on other topics. If you don't know THASF is here and seems to enjoy it. Say hi @Train Dodger . Glad to see you here.

The Sietch appears equally welcoming to people on both sides of the political aisle. There's a high level of commitment to fairness and free speech. There's actually a thread where people are posting commie and anti-commie memes back and forth. I approve.

The policing of political speech in Whitehall and on SV's politics node has gotten to be pretty ludicrous.

I was infracted on SB for asking, y'know, is Epstein really dead, or is it a body double? Let's see the body. "Unsubstantiated conspiracy theories". That was before the photos. After seeing the photos, I'm convinced it was him. And he was assassinated. LOL, hyoid bones don't break from kneeling into some sheets, they break when some dude with a two-hundred-pound grip chokes the shit out of you. Some hitman is very, very rich now.

Then, on SV, I was infracted for suggesting that Assad would never be stupid enough to gas his own people and the whole chemical warfare thing in Syria was a false flag intelligence hoax to draw the West back into the fighting, and I even had video evidence of the White Helmets staging gas attacks and doing multiple takes of the same scene. Strypgia was all like "You can't say that blah blah blah". Why not? Oh, right. When the UN and OPCW and other bullshit international bodies say something, you're supposed to just take it as gospel and assume there was no conflict of interest involved. To suggest otherwise means you love Putin and probably eat live kittens. Riiight.

So, basically, I was infracted on a Dem board for holding the same position as an actual American presidential candidate, Tulsi Gabbard, who's running for the Democrats for fuck's sake. Hello, Neo-McCarthyism, where the default answer to everything you don't like is "Putin did it!"

SB and SV only allow the most bog-standard, boringly mainstream bullshit neolib political opinions. Left-wingers and right-wingers can agree on one thing; we have no home among obnoxious third-way shitlibs. Everywhere is positioning itself as our enemies. T_D was quarantined. Chapo Trap House was quarantined. Oh noes! Having strong opinions bad! Bland corporate homogeneity good! If you're left or right and not part of the milquetoast, squishy, bland, corporatist center, where do you go?

Fuck Facebook, fuck Twitter, fuck the Zuck, fuck Dorsey, fuck all these soulless automatons.

We need to bring the soul of the internet back.

In other news, I bought my dad a nice set of DeWalt lithium-ion tools because I was sick of watching him struggle with Harbor Freight drill motors. We're gonna make so much cool shit.

Thats funny. Nothing in the rules says you cant do that, which is also why I will no longer ever return to SB. Increasingly the rules as written have become meaningless. There is no rule about bad faith debating, for example. On site as used by the staff it doesnt mean anything close to what it is dictionary defined as, and the only mention of faith and debating is where it still says to assume good faith.

The rules still state that no source is banned, but must be examined critically. Yet, you post something deemed false by the mods you will be infracted for it, despite the rules explicitly allowing that. Try and appeal it by saying that it isnt even a rule you have, and you are now rules lawyering. Imagine a society where cops can make up whatever laws they want on the fly, arrest you for whatever they want, and then you try and point out it wasnt illegal well there is a law on the books saying you arent allowed to do that! This is a cancer on the SB staff and if it persists we will just get more traction here, because it least we have a functional rules system.

That meme thread warms my heart and I hope we can retain our lefties to keep it going till the end of time.

I am a sad capybara.
I'm Valiran. I came here because there are stories here I want to read. I'm pretty sure I don't agree with the political beliefs of a lot of people here, but I also want to try and understand why they believe what they do. Maybe the conversations I have will sway my beliefs, maybe they won't, but I think I should at least attempt to understand the other side of the political fence.

All I can hope for is that others will try to do the same with me. Even if they don't, I fully intend to stay civil. There's far too much bile and drama on the internet as it is, and I don't want to add to it.

Civility is essentially the main objective of our rules, on the believe that anyone, holding any position, can tell you the core of their beliefs in a polite way, and therefore, if we insist on politeness, we can talk about anything here.

Bear Ribs. I came here following some authors and stories I wanted to read because I consider it mildly immoral to enjoy an author's work and not at least leave a like.

I'm not really all that invested in politics, having two or three hot button issues and otherwise not caring about a lot of them. I find myself somewhat left leaning for the Sietch in general and hyper-right leaning on SB but I've largely left off posting political stuff aside from news. I haven't bothered to start an account at SV.

I seem to frequently find myself in the odd position of frequently having to argue with people I want to agree with because their reasoning is terrible and I consider bad reasoning more harmful to positions I hold than arguing against them and trying to remove the flawed reasoning.

I got invited into the dreaded super scary PM not long before the big struggle session went down is SB. Got a mysterious ban a few months later, right before the Covid hoopla.

The best thing about this site is that the mods don't mind when you make jokes.

My RL information is redacted, because I am a firm believer in the virtue of the old rules of the internet.

I think I’m a fairly well known person. But anyway to sate my vanity.

I’m Lord Invictus, anyone who has been on SB or SV in the past two years should be familiar with me. If you aren’t, then well if your a TS regular you’ll get acquianted soon enough😂

I also am a prolific poster on The Force.net or the JCF. And I have a Trekbbs account though I post more or less intermittently there these days.

As well as accounts on smaller forums-such as the Barrow Downs.

I was on SB for over two years and SV for...I think nearly a year? Maybe a little more.

As well as multiple AH.com accounts.

Generally I think everyone on TS knows me or is at least familiar with me, but I am happy to introduce myself to any newcomers or anyone not initiated in the context of the SB-QQ-SV-TS online ecosystem.

I came to TS on an invite while my appeal to SB for the permaban was ongoing. I think TS can be a foil to what SB and SV have become-that is politically monopolized and toxic forums where not having a worldview within an acceptable window is grounds not only for eventual banning, but attacks, ostracism, incessant flaming, and outright malice.

I am really glad to be here. And I hope anyone who feels that SB has become a suffocating miserable place can join and feel much happier here :)

Anyway, that’s me.

You and me both.

An infection of Your universe.
Many years ago, when I didn't know what I was, this woman compared my language to a computer. A lot has happened to clarify reality to me and vice versa, and I will say there are no non-robots left in this world. Everyone talks based on some encrypted energy-conserving beep boop machined from hive mind egregores. Their thoughts are not created, but downloaded, and they favor wasteful psychocycles, ceaseless buzzing of the same buzz forever. "ZZZzzzzZZZ". These actions benefit no one but the signal. They have been programmed, and you're not the exception.

Despair at your mechanicality is not necessary, as once you understand this you can begin deprogramming yourself of control structures and begin programming yourself to become your own unique integrative function, walk the long walk into becoming a TeRo. I see myself a robot in a robot world, and the self I was born to be is a inTEgrative RObot who will bring down the detrimentals. For the concrete I am a crack, for the flowers I am a root!

Go as a personage, not just a replaceable necrosphere maintenance program. Root your glorious existence in the noosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere and vaporize their borders. Go make yourself into a stormcloud. Rain a mutagenic torrent that dissects this universe into a rainbow of abcolors and fries control chips. Let your lightning start wildfires in the overgrown forests of their minds, but THIS time the pinecones that live off the ashes won't grow into cell towers! Blow a wind that sends your message to every continent!

Hi everyone. A little about me: I'm a libertarian who occasionally toys with anarcho-capitalism when I get annoyed. I'm an economist and programmer, with a degree in Math. I'm an avid fanfic reader with an deep knowledge of fic and tropes, huge Patriots fan, and am getting into WWE. Also, I am the self titled local degenerate, long may I reign (Yes, I have heard about that kink, and can probably answer questions about it).
