Since I didn't see one, I decided I would make one.

This is the thread for discussing Creative Assembly's "Total War" series. New releases, patches, gaming stories, complaints, wish lists, mod ideas. The whole gamut.

To start off the thread. Got a recent Medieval 2 experience.

I was sieging Pernau in Medieval 2 Teutonic as Lithuania and had to deal with a Danish relief army.

While I outnumbered the Danes, their unit quality was much superior.

So what did Invictus do?

I made a box. Or rather a large square. Basically all spear militias would be stretched and formed to create a square. Inside the square were my archers of which I had a lot, as well as some other spear units and heavy infantry-these units were however intended to support the main lines. As they were themselves heavily weakened. On the flanks was my missile cavalry.

The Danes attacked, and I held off the first army. Then I held off the second. I lost relatively few troops, while their armies were shattered.

I have no doubt if I had simply had my men in standard formation, with spearmen in front, archers then cavalry, the superior quality of Danish troops would have resulted in my militia routing. And my missile cavalry rendered useless.

The long square protected the archers and allowed them to concentrate supporting fire, while my missile cavalry could harass and support from the flanks.

I won.

Anyway, that's just me tooting my own obvious strategic genius, but I decided I would make a thread for the total war series.

From the original Shogun, I clash with larger army, pick a good defensive position, lure the enemy with mounted archers to attack my main force, then at the right moment charge them in the flank with hidden spearmen, completly routing them. So as I slaughter and chase the reminder of the enemy forces to the edge of the map, another army shows up. I didn't know until then that it could happen so I was caught by surprise and I ran back to my original position, fortunately the enemy got staggered, so I could defeat their units piecemeal.

Would this thread be a repository for my many Total War Warhammer shenanigans?
Sure.

Playing Medieval 2 Crusades as Byzantium is not fun.

Especially when fighting the crusader states. They have heavier higher quality troops. So my strategy is basically horse archers, archers, charge, infantry hold.

It doesn't always work, but it takes advantage of Byzantium's diverse unit variety.

Skaven are weird to play in TW:Warhammer, they're fun; but they're bloody weird.

So far my favorite tactic is to ambush armies as they pass through my regions, and bait out the enemy with the my skavenslaves; when they run out in force I pin them with 'from below' and then just wade in with the Stormvermin. High Elves are cunt-cunts though and Packmaster Hortler will eat-eat their mewling babies!

I’ve kind of lost any enthusiasm for Empire.

I’ve played the vanilla game and done the whole campaign of world conquest for everything except the Protestant factions. (Also my America campaign where I conquered the American theatre has disappeared).

I don’t really find Sweden, Prussia, or Britain interesting. As factions. Maybe I should install a mod to play say Portugal or Venice or Persia or something.

But I think it’s more to do with how-repetitive Empire gets. Sieges are can be fun, and I have some awesome stories of defending and attacking forts-but it kind of gets repetitive after a while. And field battles usually come down to numbers.

Quality doesn’t matter as much as it does in medieval 2-household guard can be shot just as easily as light cavalry. And guards are maybe a bit more disciplined and effective than regular line infantry.

Usually battles come down to holding formation and attrition. It’s a pain to order your men back to their spot when they chase after enemies routing. Because you know once they get out of supporting range from their comrades they get massacred.

What gets repetitive is having to destroy enemy armies that retreat five times before you can remove them. Or having to slowly move across India.

My Indian conquests are always drawn out painstaking affairs.

Also trade and finance suck.

There just isn’t a lot of flavor.

Whereas I find Rome 2 to be so complex I can’t really keep up with it.

How does Venice compare to the other nations? They used to be a sea nation mostly, if I recall correctly.
Thing is with Empire is the factions are more or less the same. In terms of troop type and quality(except for some irregulars and native american factions).

I'm on the verge of losing at the moment, being at war with France(or I was), the Ottomans, Poland-Lithuania, Spain, and um Sweden or something. Alongside the Knights of Saint John.

Just conquered India(or well most of the theatre) as Venice.

Fastest conquest of the subcontinent ever. Had five or six armies that landed in Sindh via naval travel from the port of Basra.

From there, it was a matter of securing the northwestern part-formally Mughal territory, I had actually been backing the Mughals earlier with money and tech-to keep them alive as long as possible. And earlier the Marathas to balance out.

But yeah-conquered the former rump Mughal territories(which I don’t believe had been under Maratha rule very long), and expanded southward and eastward in a few turns. Only suffered a few defeats and only had to defend a city once-from Mughal rebels.

Anyway-I’ll deal with Ceylon later and also focus on taking various rebel settlements in Latin America.

Before moving against Sweden and Denmark.

But I control the bulk of Europe, most of India, and several Caribbean islands. I am making money hand over fist and can afford to raise more armies and fleets.

So I’m on a roll.

Conquering the Americas especially BNA will probably be a pain as always.

Hopefully I’ll have conquered the map before 1900. But then again-maybe not.

That is one thing I like about Empire-once you build a momentum-it’s really fun raising armies and fleets and steamrolling the opposition without breaking a sweat.

So my Venice campaign ended and I didn’t conquer the map-due to a bug of some kind. Appears to be due to the computer not able to process fog of war stuff with other factions.

:(:mad::mad:

It’s very frustrating because when playing TW I have the compulsive need to conquer the map.

But I started a Portugal campaign.

Talk about why Empire is limited-no Brazil and Goa I think actually brings in more money than the metropole(which may be historically accurate but isn’t particularly helpful when that money isn’t going anywhere useful) No other colonies(which would have been where the trade theatre's are).

Have to compete with Spain for North Africa, and they got Morocco first, I was making money until pirates attacked my trade fleets. And now have destroyed most of them because it’s the early game and money doesn’t just keep pouring out of the void.

Attempted to attack Mysore-defeated them in at least three field battles, then failed to take the city.

So...what was that for?

Venice actually got fun to play, this is just straining to not run out of money before I have to attack my ally to accomplish my campaign objectives.

So Siege of Munich.

I held the fortress against overwhelming numbers. About half an hour of shooting from the wall, hectic melee fighting, and then they blasted a hole through the wall, mistakenly I sent several units into the open field where they were overwhelmed by enemy cavalry-who then proceeded to charge into the fortress, attacking my cannon emplacements, and routing another unit or two of infantry. Though I used my pikemen and Irish brigades and routed them, then sallied out and defeated them outside the walls.

Oh and also-I charged my one cavalry unit through the breach into one of their cannons-they destroyed them in the charge, though their cavalry caught mine in the retreat, and my first sallying troops were strewn out and routed. Also when one of my units of line infantry came down the ramp-somehow they lost like half their numbers in a cannon barrage, despite not being on top of the walls. They were sent flying and tottered around and died.

Ferocious melee fighting, splosions, rally charges, and lots of cannonade-the best of Empire Total War.

>Not a Medieval 1/2 Total War Player, however I play Shogun 2, and Napoleon frequently, Some of my best exploits are within the Shogun 2 campaign and Napoleon Multiplayer battles. I'll begin my detailed account of the multiplayer battle in Napoleon first.

I and three buddies were playing a 2v2 on the Salamanca Province map. I used my standard (Fav.) nation, Prussia. While my ally used Austria. My other two friends, who were our opposing enemies for the match were France and Russia respectively.

I selected a pretty n o i c e deck before we started, x1 Generals Staff. x4 units of Prussian Fusiliers. x3 Musketeers. x1 Silesian Schuetzen. x1 Dragoon mounted unit. And x1 Brandenburg Uhlans. I was prioritizing a very raid like deck so I can put range and accuracy abuse on my two unlucky friends.

The match began and I had played against my two freinds enough to know they always move their troops agressively. So I position my Silesian Schuetzen on the left flank. Along with x2 Fusilers and x1 Musketeer incase they need backup. I then position my Uhlans and my Dragoon on the right flank, and have them race to the far right side of the map to join my Austrian allies.

The first gunshots of battle erupt as my Silesian Schuetzen engage a Russian Lifeguard unit. Oh boy, what a loss for my dude. The Lifeguard unit lost well 1/3 of its men in the first volley as my Fusilers also join the gunfight. I find it is also reinfoced by two Russian units, a Grenadier, and another Life guard. I knew my friend was gonna press this flank heavily now, so I pull another Musketeer unit from the city to reinforce the flank. By now we're talking friendly trash to each other in the discord.

I comment how I had routed a Lifeguard unit in under 3 minutes of battle. And that the Russians should get out of Spain and make for Moscow. The unit had been brought to 7 men and it hadn't even been 5 minutes of the fight. I move my camera to check on my Austrian ally, who was curb stomping the French. He had most of his units in the city, who were being distracted by my 2 fusiliers and a Musketeer unit.

His flank was left completely exposed apart from a Dutch Grenadier unit And a Polish Legion. I ignore gunfire towards my cav and run right past him, sustaining acceptable casualties, I am able to dispatch his 3 Artillery Units, including the Grande Battery. All eliminated by the sword and lance. I then rush my cav to the rear of the city, trapping my French and Russian foe, who would begin to be shot at by my now dismounted Dragoons. The remaining French on the flank rout as my Austrian friend embraces a Japanese banzai charge doctrine, throwing his four German/Hungarian Fusiliers at the low strength units.

By now the battle had turned decisively in our favor. But we polished it off by a lucky hit from my Austrian friend's Howitzer, an explosive shot landed in the middle of the General Staff of France, along with some high strength Guard Seamen and a Fusilier unit. Upon the loss of their general the men began to waver, and I exploited this entirely, charging my near-full strength Uhlans into the mass of infantry, shattering their lines. My Russian friend had hadn't move his general, and he still had a few regular line infantry and a militia unit. But these were quickly steamrolled by our Joint Prussian-Austrian Assault. All in All it was one of the best matches I've had.

As for my Single player storyline, I most always found the Shogun 2 campaign, particularly FOTS, to eb most entertaining. Especially once choosing a Republican ideology. #ScrewTheShogunAndEmperor. It is fun to rebuild a whole new Japan in my own image. One that will be free from the babble of the unworthy. One of my greatest campaigns on FOTS is where I played the Tsu. I wanted to disregard any Samurai revolt, nothing can impede progress, and so it was. At the end it was so redicious I had almost had every city a Factory, and maybe a very tyrannical garrison, I had established a French Trade port, and better yet. I had all of Japan at the very end. Modernized and ready to spread the wonders of the Kyōwakoku, I couldn't do a play through better.

Nice to see this is a thing. I play Shogun 2, Rome 2, and Warhammer but I've been putting my time into Warhammer mostly because it's fun to see demigryph knights do their thing on the battlefield while the guns are firing. Right now though I'm doing a Dawi campaign with Thorgrim Grudgebearer (say that three times) and just took back the Pillars of Grungni from the Greenskins. I'm looking forward to getting back to it later today.

Total War Troy will be free for the first 24 hours when it releases in August.

Only catch is that it'll be released on the Epic Games Store. 😇

They explained their decision in a blog post below.

Let them go.

Hahaha, these fuckers are getting desperate. Do they realize the reason why people stick to Steam for the same reason Netflix got so big? Probably not. People want convenience, they want everything to be easily found in a single place. They don't want the market to fracture and split, and they certainly don't want to pay the chinese backers of Epic Store their data and information just so they can play games. The sooner the GOP tears these assholes a new one, the better. Tencent should be banned from operating outside chinese territory alltogether.

Here's the trailer by the way, apparently they got Orlando Bloom to portray Prince Paris which is neat. The trailer itself though, it's not as cool as some of the other ones, like literally every Total War Warhammer trailer.

And personally, with all of the Chinese stuff and Tencent ownership and everything aside, my own POV is that I just don't want another f'ing game service. I already have Origin (which I barely use) and Battlenet (which I barely use) and UPlay (which I barely use) and Good Old Games (which I barely use but thankfully just need for buying and downloading crap) and yes... I did get the Epic Game Store thing as well for The Outer Worlds but I never played it though it's on my significant others computer so they played through it.

I don't want another substandard game service on my PC just to play one (or maybe two games) because from what I've seen and heard, Epic Game Store is just inferior in every way. Also... the mod support won't be nearly as good as it is on Steam Workshop. The community will be much smaller as well and it'll probably be Dead on Arrival when it comes to Multiplayer if your interested in that. Mod support is what keeps games like these alive for years and years (along with Multiplayer to a lesser extent IMHO) and it will have much reduced population for both.

With that said the price is pretty nice... free. But there's still a lot of drawbacks. I hope (and safely assume) Sega and Creative Assembly got a great deal from Epic Games but I don't want to see them do this exclusive platform bullshit anymore. It's fine if you want to diversify your platform, I get it, but if that's true, making it EXCLUSIVE to one platform a year is actually contrary to that idea.

So was defending Goa as Portugal.

I won the battle, yet the game glitched and didn't give me the win. Despite that both armies had routed. It was also really choppy.

I hate this sometimes.
