A good strategy for police would be to get a couple plainclothes to wait a store, wait for the looters to break inside and crowd around and then surround the place with riot police jumping out of vans.
A strategy so simple even my civilian ass can think it up.
Guess the Minneapolis police are just a buncha glory hounds and Cabal enforcers with no real interest in protecting property and people.

Put a couple of officers hiding alone in a store and hope that specific one gets raided. Then, wait for the wave front of a riot to push past it so looting can start in the wake. Then magic invisible vans show up from nowhere and deploy a dozen or so riot troopers. Those troopers are then separated from the plain-clothes by the same rioters that the same troopers already have trouble quelling or dispersing with better organised positions and more men.
Overwhelming envelopment is a simple tactic, but in war "the simplest thing is difficult" and actually pulling it off is far from easy or maybe even possible. It certainly doesn't seem useful to me, unless your hope is for some kind of violent altercation with the plain-clothes to escalate things.

They got to keep their law license, and can still own guns, and in total paid $2750 in fines.
For someone with a lot of money, that's probably the right call. Just get it over with.
There is already a picture of him going out to buy another gun.

It's not going to help him win a seat in the Senate though.
He still backed down when people wanted him to keep fighting; which helps the regressive left set the precedent that people aren't allowed to defend themselves on their own property from a violent mob.
The prosecution was going hard after him. He found the best way to just get a misdemeanor

It's a culture war; wars aren't won without taking risks. Heck; part of the reason the regressive left has grown to be as powerful as it has become is because nobody wanted to risk the consequences of resisting them, meaning those consequences were allowed to become more and more dire as everyone capitulated out of fear. If he's not willing to fight, fine; but don't expect me to pretend he's still fighting.

It’s not about the short term smart play it’s about the political play. It doesn’t matter about how the system works it’s how the people feel and the people are tired of people playing it smart and safe they want warriors and champions. It doesn’t matter that he’ll buy a new gun he gave up his old one for the safe play that isn’t the path a hero would take. So I agree with Terthna

Make it so you can't run for senate until the case is over with, so someone who will do worse can run in stead

My guy. The dude made the smart play but if life was a story he wouldn’t be an interesting character anymore and that’s the way things are going facts and logic isn’t the natural human way of making sense of the world stories are. This dude was the embodiment of a character an avatar but by breaking away from the path of the character people will lose interest.
So while he will be able to run I don’t know if he’ll be able to win.
The whole situation is the conservative or rights problem in microcosm. The left has hero characters and are fighting a righteous war. The right is that boring kid who won’t play pretend and while the right may be getting some of that back it’s held back by “smart” plays and “rational” arguments.
Living in a society where everyone acts like rational adults with well reasoned arguments is a fantasy we need to embrace the chaos of reality a little more. More Pathos less Logos.
