No update this week.

I've had a bit of a brain fog all this week. I also had my rifle explode on me at the range on Saturday. I'm out about $1000 because of it, expect a return to form next week.

OOOF.

I hope you didn't get hurt and the rifle wasn't anything too difficult to replace.

Lakeshore ammunition. They do factory reloads. And I misread it as new ammo.
D'oh!

Last time I tried reloads was for my .40 Springfield XD and they were undercharged. Never enough ooomph to actually push the slide back enough to properly extract and load a new round.

In comparison...I think my experience was better than yours.

Let Us Unite: Chapter XVIV
Let Us Unite: Chapter XVIV

Date: January 25, 2863
Location: Altair, Draconis Combine

Franklin Kurita’s Awesome shifted underneath him as the 18th Dieron Regulars and a battalion of the 1st Sword of Light moved in formation around him towards the base that was the closest to the Hegemony’s dropships.

Franklin shifted his attention to the battlecomputer that he’d installed years before. The satellites weren’t reporting enemy movements anymore, but what they did manage to get had painted a grim picture for both sides.

It was evident that they’d managed to damage one of the Hegemony dropships on its way down, but it was impossible to tell if they were blocked from offloading the kit and personnel from the few images they’d received before the satellites went down.

But in the process, Altair had lost all but a handful of their aerospace fighters, leaving them with salvaged Riflemen and Partisans for their anti-aircraft defenses.

In normal circumstances, the 18th Dieron Regulars, 1st Sword of Light, and supporting units would have already pushed to challenge the landing zone and grounded dropships of the Terran Hegemony.

But Franklin and all of the personnel on Altair had orders directly from the Coordinator. They were to hold Altair. And dead soldiers and destroyed equipment could hold no ground. They would be playing the long game.

“Get our artillery in position,” Franklin directed the support elements. “And have our infantry begin defensive preparations, we will hold this position for as long as possible before falling back.”

“Who do we have on CAP?” McFadden asked, her Highlander’s battlecomputer highlighting the battlefield.

“This is Crimson Squadron, we’ve got you covered,” a flight of four Royal Stukas streaked overhead along with dogfighter and interceptor escorts. “We’ll make sure the Arty doesn’t get to take potshots at y’all.”

“Copy that, Crimson,” McFadden nodded, sending messages to Capell back on the Overlord. “Keep an eye out for fire support missions. We’re going to have a very busy next few days.”

“Acknowledged,” Crimson 1 replied. “You have us for the next four hours, then we rotate out with Maroon Sqaudron.”

“Understood, Good hunting, Crimson.”

“Colonel, LZ is secure, but I’ve got some bad news,” Major Bryn Capell’s voice came through on the private command channel.

“Are we secure?” Colleen asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” Capell replied.

“Then go ahead.”

“We managed to offload all of the equipment off of the Abyss. But she’s not going anywhere. The damage was more significant than predicted and engines one, three, and four are completely shot. Frankly, it’s a miracle that she made it down in one piece.”

“I assume the Abyss’s stores are still intact,” McFadden sighed. “If they are, then that’ll end up being our repair base and supplies storage until we manage to take over one of the Combine bases. Once we’ve moved on, we’ll begin moving personnel and supplies from the Abyss to cover our advance.”

“Understood, Colonel. I’ll handle everything else on the back end.”

“Wait one,” Colleen McFadden grinned as an idea popped into her head. “Capell, you remember that one training op where we got schooled by the General?”

“Aye, what of it?”

“Remember how we took the bait?”

“I’ll start pulling personnel and supplies out of the Abyss now,” Bryn replied. “Give me twelve hours to get everything prepared.”

“I need status reports, people!” Melissa Davion leaned over the table, a bunch of papers scattered in front of her.

“We’ve pulled back military personnel from former Hegemony worlds to reinforce the Combine and Capellan borders,” Orlando Hasek responded.

“We’re reactivating ancient ‘Mech factories,” Sandoval reported. “Older designs might have a worse reputation, but they can mostly be built in industrialmech factories. We’re sending the plans to every periphery world with infrastructure for at least repairing the Industrialmechs. It might not be the best ‘Mech, but it’s something that can at least keep some pirates at bay.”

“MIIO and DMI are reporting that the Hegemony launched strikes against Hegemony worlds held by the Combine and Capellans,” Colonel Isaac Green-Davion flipped calmly through his reports. “The Capellans immediately retreated from those worlds to reinforce their own holdings once given the opportunity. The Combine on the other hand, seem to be resisting as much as possible. They’re not going to give up Altair or similar wthout a fight.”

“Have our ambassador reach out to the Hegemony, see if they’re willing to sell any equipment to us. We have the personnel to use kit, but our production is where we’re lacking,” Melissa spoke. “Isaac, start purchasing surplus Taurian gear through proxies. We need everything we can get our hands on while we rebuild.”

Location: Taurus, Taurian Concordat

“Now is the time to strike!” the current head of the Taurian Ministry of Intelligence slammed his fist on the ground. “The Davions are weak, the rest of the Star League States are struggling, we must take our worlds back while we still can!”

“No,” Ignatius shook his head, his face the very picture of peace and calm. “We have only just finished driving out the corruption and rot in our own worlds. We are still remembering who we are as a people, and you want to begin a war?”

“No,” Ignatius continued. “We will remain firm and consolidate here. We will recover what we almost lost to the ‘Loyal Opposition’. At this point, those worlds have been a part of the Federated Suns for almost as long as they were a part of the Concordat. The Star League has fallen, the Hegemony has only just returned, and the Inner Sphere stands at a tipping point.”

The Protector sighed.

“But we are not the Inner Sphere. We are the Concordat, we resist tyranny, we strive to be better than the rest of the nations here. Are we not the nation of individual liberty? Of self-determination? We will have our revenge. But not in the way that many of you want. No, we will rise above the rest of the nations here by our superior conduct. We were once the haven for technology, for learning. And now that the eyes have turned away from us, we will do so again. But we will not forget what and who we are as a people. Our constitution is firm, the corruption has been swept away and we have an opportunity now that we have not had in decades, if not centuries. The opportunity to cement who we are in history by our deeds. Not those of war, but of righteousness.”

“How do you want us to proceed then, sir?” General Becket of the TDF asked.

“There are many worlds that have been devastated by the wars. We will send people to begin cleaning up the damage from chemical and nuclear weaponry. General, I want you to put together protective details for the cleanup crews. We’ll begin with the worlds of the Concordat and slowly work outwards. Our refining fire is now. What we say and do as a people in this moment is what people will remember of us for the rest of time.”

There are many worlds that have been devastated by the wars. We will send people to begin cleaning up the damage from chemical and nuclear weaponry.
With the FS so desperate for military equipment the TC might be able to bargain for some of the former TC worlds abandoned by the FS.

The TC would have to beggar themselves in equipment to make that palatable to the FS, and the TC would never give up the required material as it would make them weaker vs the FS.

Or offer them a 20 year non-aggression treaty combined with some economic opening of the TC's markets and a willingness to openly sell the FS every mech, tank, and ASF the Concordants factories can produce beyond domestic demand and Davion will jump at it. Davion gets a quiet border he can draw more troops from, gets to buy much more equipment to rebuild his forces, that happen to be the weakest they've been since the SW started, gets more money from open trade, and loses a planet he is not using and has no one living on.

Yes, losing a world might tweak his ego but those pieces of military equipment will let him hold and liberate more worlds from the DC and CC.

I think the better play is to go to an open markets exchange. Not quite free trade, but there's a bunch of stuff that the TC would love to get in exchange for selling surplus military gear. That would help the TC clean up those other planets as well as buffing up the FS military.

Chapter XX

Date: January 27, 2863
Location: Altair, Contested World

“C’mon, take the bait,” McFadden breathed as she watched the Combine forces surround the Abyss. The damaged dropship shut down and was left behind as her forces “Moved” onto the following areas.

The few Mechs who had hands among the Combine began to force open the doors to the Dropship, with salvage and recovery teams following in their flatbeds and torches.

The Combine was prepared for explosive charges or other traps that the Hegemony forces would likely have left behind when they left the Abyss on the field once they’d moved. They weren’t prepared for the Hegemony to have left intact forces in the dropship.

A full thirty-six battlemechs were still in the second bay, with half the complement of vehicles in the first bay. After the Salvage and recovery teams breached the doors, fusion and internal combustion engines roared. Their pilots rapidly acquired targets and shredded the engineers who had volunteered to salvage the wreckage.

At the same time, the Abyss’s reactors sparked to life, and the gunnery crews began to acquire targets, the weaponry adding to the confusion of the Combine forces.

“Let’s close the trap, people!” McFadden powered up her reactor and slammed her feet onto her pedals, her Highlander heating up as she pushed through the trees to join the forces surrounding the members of the various units that were acting as support for the 18th Dieron Regulars and 1st Sword of Light turned and began engaging the Black Watch forces.

Unfortunately, they were caught between the hammer and anvil, and the Combine forces were rapidly smashed to pieces.

“Load up the gunnery crews and get clear!” McFadden heard Capell’s voice on the radio. “Enemy artillery will probably hit at any moment, and we’ll only have a brief window to take advantage of this.”

“This is Crimson Squadron. All aerospace squadrons are on Close Air Patrol. We’ll take care of any artillery that shows up. You just handle the Triple A for us.”

Multiple squadrons of ASF streaked overhead, a handful of Air to ground missiles attached to the hardpoints streaking off ahead of them to impact with a handful of vehicles and ‘Mechs that were trying to retreat from the battlefield.

“Cut them off here,” McFadden ordered. “Everyone we kill here is another soldier we don’t have to fight later.”

The Black Watch circle began to close in, leaving nothing but the destruction of the Draconis Combine in their wake.

“The loss of the salvage and recovery teams will affect our ability to defend this position,” Franklin sighed, looking over the battlecomputer installed in his Awesome in exchange for the small laser many years ago.

“All units, fall back to nav point Gamma,” he ordered. “This base won’t be able to hold them off if they decide to hit us.”

“No,” Tai-Sa Sato Rokuro replied. “The Sword of Light will not dishonor itself against a foe such as this. We will hold this position and show these honorless gaijin what they face.”

“We have orders from the Coordinator himself that tell us to hold this world,” Franklin Kurita growled back. “You will follow instruction, or I will end you myself.”

“You may try,” Rokuro’s Atlas turned its guns on Franklin’s Awesome. “You will not succeed.”

The rest of the 1st Sword of Light also turned their weapons on the few 18th Dieron surrounding Franklin.

“If you desire to throw your life away, so be it,” Franklin replied. “I serve the will of the Dragon. My life is not mine to forfeit. It is blood to be spilt and sacrificed as the Coordinator needs. Tai-Sa, I do not believe you will find them an easy enemy to face. You will find no support from me. Nor will you find mercy should you fail. Your swords will not pass to your children. The dishonor you will leave them will break them.”

“But if I succeed, the glory shall belong to the 1st Sword of Light alone,” Rokuro turned his weapons away. “We are the pride of the Coordinator.”

“Follow my previous orders,” Franklin ordered the 18th Dieron. “We have our orders.”

But only half of the rebuilt regiment turned to follow him, the rest halting in their tracks.

“We will remain with the Sword of Light,” Sho-Sa Koizumi McTavish responded. “We will gain glory for the Coordinator.”

“You fools,” Franklin muttered to himself as his remaining forces moved with him. “Disaster is all that you will find here.”

He had the infantry and a handful of vehicle support battalions to go with his battalion of ‘mechs. But it would not be enough to stave off the Terran Hegemony. The pride of the Combine would be a part of this world’s downfall.

Author’s Note: Sorry this is a bit short, but I’m starting to get back into the swing of things on this story.
