Important Logo Contest

Thanks for the update - now I have a better idea of what exactly you want.

So, just to clarify: the header is basically what goes on the top of the forum (replacing the xenForo) and the logo should be incorporated into the banner and would be the symbol that hangs next to the tab, correct?

Well, it will supplement the xenForo, we would pay a lot of money to replace that. The logo should be in the banner, and would be the symbol that hangs next to the tab, yes. And in a few other places, I suppose.

Thank you.

I think I have something cooked up for the logo, but can I ask for an example of the banner the staff want? Like: a rough idea of how big it is, where you want it to go?

Thank you.

Well, we want something that has a width:height ratio on the order of 10:1, and for it to be at least 2000 pixels wide. Preferably any text would be readable when dynamically scaled down to an 800 pixel width. The higher the resolution source that is made, the less likely we are to need to redo it in the future when display resolutions climb even higher than they are now.

If we go with a simple text on transparent option, I'd really like to see anti-aliasing enabled.

Alright, submitting my proposal. I'm titling this: Krelln and Arvon.

First up, the symbol:

lsNwiCI.png

pictured on top is a stylized version of the symbol, where it is given a metallic "gleam" like effect. On the bottom, we have a simpler, single-tone version of the symbol. As to comply with Staff requests for higher-resolution images, this is 1000x1000 px across, is scalable down to 800x800 px, and may be scaled down further to 200x200 px whilst being recognizable.

I considered a few different things I could use. I had the image of a hooded Fremen warrior in my mind, a black silhouette against a bright star for the longest time. Unfortunately, I was not an artist, and modifying pre-existing images was a no-go as per the necessities of the contest. As a result, I decided to look for more abstract images.

Refreshing my memory of Dune and doing some research, I was inspired by the two moons of Arrakis, named Krelln and Arvon. The original concept ended up being the final one, funnily enough. I considered making the symbol more complex: bearing a hand on one and a rodent creature on the other was my first idea, that again, failed due to a lack of artistic talent. I then moved to stylize the first two initials of the website on the symbol instead, one on each moon. I even thought about a possible way to incorporate it into the banner, pre-guidance, where I would simply extend out the initials to form the full name of the website.

However, in the end, I felt that it looked too tacky - the detailing looked plain wrong, and I opted again for a simpler look: the two moons, overlapping one another.

I admit that on its own, the symbol has only a tenuous connection to the Fremen (which was an explicit requirement.) Moreover, the space-themed design may hearken back to SpaceBattles (when that may not be the desire nor intention of the Staff, particularly at this time.) However, I think the design has a simple, visual appeal that outweighs this. Moreover, while I do not object to the Dune theme, I was aiming for something that is evidently "inspired by," while remaining distinct from Dune. Were this a fansite devoted to Dune I would be more interested in a faithful recreation, but as it stands I think a subtle reference is all that is needed.

Now, the banner. The image itself is transparent (and hopefully anti-aliased to a degree the Staff find suitable.) However, I have tested it against white, blue, and gray backgrounds to see if it would work beforehand, and I am confident that they will perform admirably.

per request of the Staff, I used higher resolutions for the logo and banner. As I am hosting these through Imgur, I had to reduce the size from 10,000x1,000 px to 7,000x700 as to maintain image quality. px Upon request, I can provide the original 10,000x1,000 px image. As with the previous image, it may ultimately be scaled down to 2,000x200 px if need be.

As before, I aim for simplicity over complexity. Proudly displayed in the center is the name of the Forum itself, colored black to set itself apart from the gray background. As it was feeling a little empty, I tried to find a good Dune quote to fill the space below with. However, I was unable to find any that I felt accurately represented the site, or that could be misconstrued against it. In the end, I went a neutral route and simply listed the definition, which explains why the forum was created easily enough. (If the Staff believe there is a quote better suited, inform me and I can change it around.)

In the background is a stone wall, bright in the center and fading further outwards. Fitting with the idea of a Sietch, I had an idea of an underground cave, serving as a refuge from both man and nature. Inscribed upon the caverns within is the name, and why it exists. Finally, as the cave fades out, the banner ends with a mirrored image of the logo on either side.

Everything but the font is a product of my own work. The font I used, Orthodox Herbertarian (thank you @Lightershoulders for directing me to it,) is available for public use for my knowledge (see Kull Wahad!) Should that prove unsuitable,
please inform me and I can modify the font into something the Staff prefers. If there are any other adjustments the Staff wish me to make, please inform me and I will make them as soon as possible. I fully agree to license the above design to BAM.

Is there any chance the deadline will be extended? Not that I don’t like increasing my own chances, but it doesn’t feel genuine to have a contest where there’s only one contestant.
