Suggestions Problems with signing up

Not sure if this is "bug report" or "suggestions" or "important" - or even if in the correct section ... so, Powers That Be, re-tag or move as appropriate.

I tried to get onboard around 1st December and I finally joined on 10.XII, which took me over a week of repeated requests for confirmation, as well as signing up with three different e-mail addresses from two providers.
Is this normal?
I still haven't received confirmation for my first two sign-up attempts, BTW.
Might there be a backlog of similar, less crafty/lucky/perserverant potential members waiting for approval?
BTW - why have approval at all? Make sign-up automatic and boot the crazies later?

Sometimes there are glitches with the system, mostly related to webmail hosts which consider the confirmation email to be spam and deep six it. In general, if you have trouble signing up please use the contact us form, include the username and email address you are trying to use, and we'll get it taken care of.

The idea of using the "contact us" form never passed my mind.
Is it mentioned in the "await confirmation" e-mail?
I no longer remember, and I admit I'm not always the most attentive of readers. There may be other dimwits like me out there
