Ryan Coogler is developing a reboot of ‘THE X-FILES’ with a "new diverse cast"

Ryan Coogler is developing a new take on "The X-Files."

Original series creator Chris Carter made the revelation during an interview with "On The Coast with Gloria Macarenko" to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "The X-Files." During the interview, Carter said, "I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount 'The X-Files' with a diverse cast. So he's got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory."

Reps for Coogler did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment. 20th Television, the studio behind the original series, declined to comment.

So they're going to make either Mulder or Scully black and/or gay. Maybe add some "non-binary" crap in there, too, since we obviously have to make the leading duo as non-representative of the general population as possible. They're definately going to make Skinner a woman, because, well, "Deputy Director of the FBI", that's got to be a woman nowadays, mark my words. Now Scully, he/she will most likely remain white, and they'll probably make him/her somewhat conservative, given he/she's supposed to be the uncool but competent skeptic playing off Mulder's free spirit, unconventional thinker persona. Let's face it, you all know in, your heart o' hearts, that's the kind of thinking the people creating this do.

But, on to an equally puzzling/annoying point: why? Why do a reboot in the first place. Granted, the obvious answer is "Because we are hacks with zero remaining creativity, and studios are more eager to shell out funding for properties that worked out in the past rather than try something new".

Yet the deeper question remains. Why? "X Files" fully is a product of the 1990ies. It's post cold war in a sense that it plays in a world where the nuclear apocalypse that kept everybody occupied is no longer imminent, no longer even at the back of people's mind. A world where the west has won, where no outer threats remain, and where that then lead to society, to audiences being more open to stories that look at government wrongdoings, at odd local legends, at alien conspiracies. It's a series very specifically set against the backdrop of emerging new subcultures -- hackers, the early internet, conspiracy theories pushed by small magazines and talk personalities, and a certain unease of parts of the populace at a state that suddenly seemed overbearing now that the threat of the Red Army was gone. It was also relatively new in so far that it managed to cover a lot of ground, thematically: cryptids, aliens, government conspiracies, the supernatural; it had it all.

Nowadays, none of that is particularly new or impressive. Cryptids and the supernatural stuff have been done five times over by shows like, well, Supernatural, Grimm and others, accumulating double digit seasons combined of that stuff. Hundreds of thousands of stories and narrations online bolster that field, so it's neither fresh nor niche anymore. Hacking is an everyday occurence. The internet is everywhere and has made people more transparent and traceable than even the wildest 90ies conspiary theories imagined. Shows like Black Mirror have worked in that field, among others.

Government conspiracies? Yeah, in the 90ies the stuff the X-Files handled appeared way out there with just enough of a whiff of possibility to keep the viewer thinking, doubting, processing fringe knowledge.

Twenty five years later, with the internet being in everybody's pocket 24/7, with decades of unprecedented government surveillance, obvious propaganda/falsehoods being peddled on screen, Wikileaks, drone attacks controlled by people sitting halfway around the globe, the controversies surrounding CoViD, GMOs, NWO etc.?

The kind of topics X-Files handled - subliminal influence and mind control, medical tests on unsuspected populaces, frame jobs, etc. - all feel like reality has caught up to them and overtaken them with the speed of a Nascar race car.

The idea of the conspiracy theory in X-Files was always to leave you with enough doubt to ask yourself: "could something like this really happen", while equally returning to the warm safety of your ordinary lives where, of course, something like that never truly happened. That was part of the charm.

Who is this supposed to be aimed at when probably half the population will immediately and emphatically answer "could something like this really happen" with "Yes, it could, and it does, and it's probably way worse than what that show even tries to portray!" ?

So, who is the target audience for this? X-Files was, in many ways, subversive. The fact that they put it front and center that it'll be a "diverse cast" reboot already tells you that this'll be as mainstream and bland as it gets.

So another attempt to cash in nostalgia and make some money. If they want to be diverse and decisive...make Scully a bi-leaning redhead. Fox Mulder can be ASEXUAL. He simply is not interested in sex. He has other things on his mind. The sexual tension can be between Scully and her superior. Lastly. Mulder has crazy conspiracy theories that ultimately prove to be right.

It's not about the money it's about the message. Especially given if certain groups are funding it....Hell could it be a money laundering scheme?
Would not surprise me. And it might be about the message, but the money still has to come from somewhere. And you’d think at some point they’d realize this isn’t effective or efficient and find another way.

What’s what quote from Voltaire? “I have only asked one thing, ‘Lord let my enemies be stupid’ and lo, it was granted”?

Sunk cost fallacy. Also the same reason people think the new socialism will work when the old one didn't.

Quick question which would be the better Mulder, Asexual or MGTOW ? With a healthy dose of not wanting to be alone with any woman save for family?

MGTOW would be better for writing some backstory for the character. Burned by divorce, repeatedly cheated on. etc. Someone who goes mostly monk to concentrate on his job.

Fox Mulder 35 years old. Doctorate with laurels in Law Enforcement. Has a 94% closure rate and wonders why he remains in the FBI. TPTB want him to remain but their hands are tied and it pisses them off.

5 years earlier Fox was accused of Sexual Harassment by a fellow agent. During the investigation some rather nasty truths were discovered. Fox had an alibi for every time she accused him. She was caught having an affair with Fox's wife. They cooked this up to cover up the plan to divorce Fox and move to Hawaii.

Needless to say shit went downhill fast. Fox's wife had an uncle who was in the US Senate. He wanted the two to stay together and as a way to punish Fox for his infidelity had him transferred to the X files. Upon learning the truth he still insisted Fox stay with his niece. Fox was having none of that and brought up the evidence discovered during his divorce. Thus he pays no alimony.

The FBI HR to cover this up and bury it someplace dark had the female agent transferred to Hawaii like she wanted. However what she doesn't know is she won't be promoted for a while. Fox's wife followed her out there. She came out of the closet and helped damage her uncle's chances of reelection in his conservative area.

Fox completed his doctorate and now wonders if he should give it all up and go work as a private consultant. TPTB decide sending in Dana Scully may salvage the situation. Everything about the SH case has been buried and memory holed. Hardly anyone remembers it to this day.

However it has left Fox with a healthy suspicion of women in general. Thus he has a small web cam in his office so that he has video evidence if a female agent comes by.

That sounds depressingly plausible and would make for a good backstory and character arc…

…which is why they’ll never do it. Probably not for another few years at least. Not unless something truly earthshaking happens with the culture of the West.

Very nice. Sounds plausible.

Mostly the money comes from ESG investment groups like BlackRock, who in turn ultimately get their money by conjuring it out of thin air. Most of the entertainment industry doesn't care about turning a profit anymore, because they don't need to turn a profit anymore; not when they're effectively getting paid infinite money to create propaganda.

This. But also due to have far the gap between rich and poor has grown, it's really not worth making things for the common folk anymore. They don't really have enough spending power to be worth the advertising, and they'll pay for your streaming service as a bundle regardless of how terrible any one individual show is so why cater to them instead of the ESG crowd?

No, they use a combination of regular Joe Schmoe retirement money and nepotistic governmnet money.

Black Rock is the biggest Index Fund provider on the planet.

Indexing is low cost and simple, but that does not give you street cred with the government parasites and leftoid parties, so they invented ESG to peddle more expensive, dumber funds, and to add insult to injury the fuckwit Fink who I would love to watch get skinned alive has to send garbage letters to CEOs telling them how to run their companies.

Fuckers like him should have as much say in running an enterprise as the average janitor or night watchman has in running a manufacturing plant.
And even them, the night watchman and the janitor actually have skin in the game and contact with the plant's daily workings of the plant, Fink and BloatRack don't have even that.
They are bureaucrat, crony capitalist leeches that not only suck on the teat of regular investors who do it via FUCKING INDEXING, but they also have the gall to complain about the way the host is conducting his business and of the viscosity of the blood.

Edit, NO IDEA WHO RYAN COOPER IS, BUT THE X-FILES WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TV SHOWS GROWING UP, FUCK HIM, HIS MUM AND HIS ENTIRE FAMILY TO THE 9th LEG, MAY ALL THEIR CHILDREN COME OUT RETARDED AND LIMBLESS, MAY THE BLACK EARTH OPEN UP AND SWALLOW THEM!

ALSO, as balkaner, this is normal to say, anyone who dislikes it is guilty of being an istaphobe. 😂 😂 😂 😂 :sneaky:

And yes, I am drinking, I have a special occasion of the type that comes maybe 1-2 times a year, but unlike b-days and regular holidays is an actuall acheivement.

Harking back to Mulder, I'm pretty sure that they would have to enlarge the core team since nobody in their right mind would place a young attractive woman together with a horndog like Mulder into a basement closet in the Me2-era...

I try. I mean you can imagine Fox having a private 'I have had enough of this shit' attitude. It mostly comes out as him seeming to be a bit emotionless. However many of the agents that work with him know that is far from the truth.

How did Mulder gain the 'Spooky' title? Easy, he investigates like Sherlock Holmes. He takes in a scene looks for the little clues that are there but overlooked then draws a picture. Currently, he has a 94% solving/conviction rate. That's why his fellows say he is 'spooky'. It is simply unnatural how he solves cases. Slow, methodic, logical.

It's why TPTB want him to remain in the FBI and why they were so pissed off at his fellow agent and his wife. If it was actual harassment, yes they would have come down on him. However, it wasn't and they had to punish him anyway.

In his off time, he likes to read. He also keeps his firearms skills up to date at a local range. Both pistols and long arms.
