The Echoes of War series, aka "The Series that Steve is writing books in"

So, I've mentioned this to a few people over the past year, including my long-suffering readers of various fics, but to reiterate, I'm writing novels in an original setting. Said setting, the Echoes of War series, is written by an old confederate of mine that I met a degree removed from Spacebattles. To put it simply, back in 2001 an SBer I was friendly with who did CGI art did some for the EoW creator, who goes by the pen name of Daniel Gibbs. Knowing I was into writing stuff said SBer put us into contact.

What followed was over 15 years of on-again off-again contact. I wrote script drafts, universe data, novelizations of plans, and several other bits of material over those years.

The universe in question revolves around a war between two interstellar Human nations: the Terran Coalition, a federation of Human-colonized worlds in the Sagittarius Arm of the galaxy, and the League of Sol, the totalitarian government that dominates Earth and the Orion Spur (aka Orion Arm) and now seeks to expand their all-consuming ideology of Society to Sagittarius. The Coalition fights for the freedoms they cherish, including but not limited to religious freedom, with the faiths of the characters playing central roles (the lead protagonist of the main books is an Orthodox Jew, for instance) as they each respond to the needs of the war in their own way. Religious belief plays a central role in the series, in fact, as Gibbs wanted to explore faith and spirituality in the character side of the stories.

In recent years, he decided to take a stab at self-publishing, distributing via Amazon. And he approached me about writing novels set in the universe. Since he'd pretty much developed an arc for the main series of books, I proposed that I could write a novel covering stuff his books only lightly touched on, focusing on the neutral worlds in the conflict where both sides curry for favors, and the independent spacers just trying to make an honest (or not so honest) living out in the neutral systems. We even set up that the characters I'd follow would appear in the second novel of the main series as brief help for the protagonists.

Then toward the end of 2018, this went from one book to three, and I agreed to it. Ultimately the contract was signed for the three books and a novella.

Suffice to say it's now four books and a novella, with the third book still underway, but I'll get to that later. For the moment, I'm happy to say that the novella, which was ultimately assigned the title "A Simple Mission", is now publicly available for free for anyone who signs up on the mailing list for the series.

To do so, just follow this link. The sign-in is near the bottom, which nets you the free novellas: mine, which will introduce the characters in the Breach of Faith series and provide the backstory for the main character, and Stand Firm, which is about the opening days of the war and a father's readiness to give everything to protect his people and his family. The site also has links to the Amazon pages for the four published novels, in digital and paperback format.

I will post when my books start to come out, of course. Until then, I hope you give the Echoes of War series a shot, I think that many of you here will enjoy it.
