The world is pretty weird in that it doesn't have naturally occuring wind or sea currents, at least not on the surface, so that black-ish hurricane with a the vortex in the middle is the sole source of storms and wind. Since it's got all sorts of magical properties the island it's hovering over - La Ival - is an orange-colored, magical-hurricane-blasted desert.
Do people actually live there? Is there anything valuable for them?

As far as my information goes, nobody lives there. The harbor noted there is just so that there's a representation on the map where the magical "current lines" can push vessels.

Makes sense. The desert is on the other side of the mountains from the vortex, so the weather is blowing in that direction.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that "The Black Boot" sounds like Mordor crossed with Italy.

Well, the way I udnerstood it from the description it's basically a giant outdoor prison where monsters etc. are deported to. Think "Escape from LA" meets fantasy meets "The Road Warrior".

Sooo, how do you handle clients that have been super responsive throughout the creation process of their piece of art, but apparently drop off the radar with a 95% finished (if watermarked) product? 'cause I haven't been burned the first time and I'm getting the suspicion that the radio silence will indefinitely continue past the current two and a half weeks on this one. On Friday it'll have been exactly three weeks since I've effectively been ghosted. I feel I'm at a crossroads here, with only one direction actually still viable to walk: I will contact the client one last time, with a clear warning; on Sunday I'll plaster their contact info and a warning on all groups and platforms I usually interact with...

It's sad, but if they refuse to cough up the money for the stuff they comissioned they should face the consequences. Either have the money ready, or don't comission.

Well my business involves custom though not maps, but our policy is to get paid in stages as the work gets done. Normally a quarter down to get started, another quarter when we've got a mock up or model of the finished piece, and then the remaining half on delivery. That way we're not out all the effort if the customer ghosts us at the last minute, at least we cover the cost of materials and usually we can sell the product to somebody else at a reduced price and make up the difference.

I usually do 50% up front, 50% upon delivery of the piece to the satisfaction of the client.

Well at least you're not out the whole sum then. See if you can repurpose it for another project later then?

Also to add, it's important in any business to assume a base level of loss from theft, error, etc. and price accordingly. Time lets you get a good handle on how much loss to bake in.

Gotta admit I'm scratching my head at rivers flowing from a marsh towards a mountain range instead of the other way around. Still the presence of a maelstrom on land and something that looks like a hole leading to the Underdark or some such indicates this world isn't playing by our physics.

So how does the lake between Kalak and Tyton get its water? It looks like has two rivers leading into it.
The western river flows into the lake, the eastern one leads out of the lake.

Not exactly sure where you're seeing that? The marshes feed two rivers; the western one leading into the lake between Tyton and Kalak, and the western one leading into the unnamed northern lake. I don't see where they flow towards a mountain range?
