Star Trek What If Star Trek: The Next Generation had been about the Enterprise B?

Just as the thread title says, how do you think the series (and the following ones) would have different if it was set fairly shortly after the movie era instead of the massive timeskip it was IRL? And I mean primarily from a real-world writing perspective, rather than an in-universe one. (For example, no citing The Undiscovered Country, because that was made several years after TNG premiered.)

I feel like it would be a huge disaster, since Gene didn't like how the movies were shaping up, and for a show set close enough for the movies to bump up against the show, the lack of coordination between teams would probably result in a lot of pointless contradictions and lack of continuity.

It would go badly. Because unlike Kirk, Picard, Spock, Data, Pike and even freaking Archer (I think I just threw up in my mouth on the last one). Harriman was a daddy's money idiot who was unworthy to even clean the fabric of an Enterprise's Captain Chair let alone sit in one. He was and remains the worst Captain of an Enterprise. And no the Novels don't freaking count.

Um Picard is not born yet at the B's Commissioning.
In the the show's original timeline, no, but I'm obviously not talking about that.
When is he gonna be Captain of the B?
When it's a fairly new ship.

You seem to be having trouble understanding what I'm getting at. Basically, think of the episode Encounter at Farpoint, complete with the crew of the Enterprise-D (Enterprise-B, here), being rewritten to take place about 80 years earlier.

You would do better to just use existing characters from that time period than to try and shoe horn TNG characters into there. Aspects about them would not sink up right. Like some races not even being Federation citizens yet because their worlds had not joined the federation yet. And let's face facts. Picard does not have a TOS mindset. He is a product of the post Klingon Cold War years. And Worf being on the the B was not gonna happen. Remember the Federation just made peace with the Klingons earlier that same year. Not trying to cause trouble but I think you would do better using other characters we know were in Starfleet at the Bs commission date. Just saying.
