SS ATLANTIC EMPRESS SINKS IN CARIBBEAN SEA
*Thursday, August 2, 1979: The supertanker SS Atlantic Empress, which was insured for $85 million, sank in the Caribbean Sea along with its cargo of 275,000 tons of crude oil. The ship had been burning since July 19th when it collided with the Aegean Captain, 20 miles (32 km) east of the island of Tobago.

ABC NEWS: GRAND JURY VERDICT RUMORED TO BE REACHED IN CORRUPTION CASE AGAINST FINCH
*Tuesday, August 7, 1979: ABC News reported that there might be a verdict reached in the corruption trial against Mississippi Governor Cliff Finch (D) ,where the trial is taking place at the US Federal District Courthouse in Jackson.
Finch, who was indicted back in the Summer of 1978 on allegations of obstruction of justice, bribery, wiretapping, and graft schemes, has strongly denied the allegations against him or members of his administration.
GUEVARA SWORN IN AS BOLIVIA'S 54TH PRESIDENT
*Wednesday, August 8, 1979: Bolivian Senate President Walter Guevara was sworn into office as the South American country's 54th President after the Bolivian Congress was unable to come to an agreement on who won the 1979 Bolivian presidential election.
HOLTON SIGNS DEREGULATION BILL INTO LAW
*Thursday, August 9, 1979: President Linwood Holton signed the Economic Deregulation Act into law. The legislation has been a top priority of US Treasury Secretary David Rockefeller ,who testified before the Senate Banking Subcommittee in supporting the Economic Deregulation Act because he strongly believes it will result in an economic recovery nationwide.
ROLDOS INAUGURATED AS ECUADOR'S 33RD PRESIDENT
*Friday, August 10, 1979: Jaime Roldos Aguilera was inaugurated as the 33rd President of the Republic of Ecuador inside the Legislative Building in Quito. Among the foreign dignitaries in attendance: US Secretary of State Malcolm Wilson ; Mexican President General Oscar Robles; Brazilian President Joao Figueriedo. Roldos is the youngest person to serve as Ecuadorian President.
LIVERPOOL DEFEATS ARSENAL IN FA CHARITY SHIELD MATCH
*Saturday, August 11, 1979: The FA Charity Shield, an annual soccer football match in the United Kingdom between the most recent winners of the regular season championship of the Football League and the FA Cup winner, was held at Wimberly Stadium before a crowd if 92,800. Liverpool, the League champion, defeated Cup winner Arsenal by a score of 3-1.
