If I may play the devil's advocate here; that's how it's supposed to work. In general, liberals want to change how things are, while conservatives want to keep things as they are. Any compromise between the two groups is going to leave both unhappy.
In America at least, this is not true. Conservatism is named for 'conserving the founding values of the nation.' Those of us who take it seriously and are invested in politics, want to actively move back in that direction.
I would say that the 'just try to keep a holding action, but willing go compromise' do comprise far too much of the right wing as a whole. I think that they are, more or less, the right-wing version of what you are to the left-wing. People who have some affiliation, but don't understand the ideals, or the importance, of what actually drives the party.
