Cowboy Bebop

Edward is a "genderfluid" boy

Cowboy Bebop fans are not going to take this well at all. Neither should they.

I've said it before but I'll say it again, I fear we'll have to wait until the 2050s for decent adaptions.

Edit: Also, what the actual shit, the bloke the got to play Spike Spiegal is some twenty years too bloody old for the role. Also, "Spike" is not the most Asian sounding of names, is it?

Actually, turns out I may be wrong; the person playing Edward identifies themselves as they/them nonbinary, and I'm finding conflicting information as to what gender they actually are, as well as whether or not it's being carried over to their portrayal of the character.

There are a million valid reasons to complain about Netflix Bebop. I'll take Cho looking old as one. But for Spike not being an asian name? As compared to what? Tony (Leung)? John (Cho)? If you don't want to count someone who had a fully asian birth name, how about Jamie (Jilynn Chung)? Constance (Wu)? Those all sound like such asian first names, I'm sure.

An additional note before anyone says anything. Spike's looks were based on Yusaku Matsuda and the creators chose the last name Spiegel because it sounded cool.

Considering the "woke" mentality, I have zero doubt that since the actor identifies themselves as "they/them" that Ed is also a "they/them."

They did actually claim this in an article I found.
Let's see if I can find it.
Oh yes, saying even the creator was unsure.

And one from pride written by a... yeahhhhhh

It's pretty obvious in the anime that she was a girl and saw herself as such. I will again find some dark humor in the fact that the creators of the live action show looked at this intelligent super-hacker, and apparently found this role to be unsuitable for a girl. 'Progressive' indeed.

Not only did Faye remark on it at the end of the first episode she joined the crew in, she constantly referred to herself in the feminine, such as calling herself a cowgirl. Even the article you linked to admits that before its author just bulldozed right on ahead with their assertion anyway.

If you were to say that my nephew Lilly isn't a guy a whole lot of angry relatives, including me, will say that Lilly is a guy.

Looks like true Cowboy Bebop fans have started a petition on behalf of the show and to keep its status on Netflix.

*Recalls Firefly petitions from two decades ago in series of PTSD/my-god-it-was-THAT-long-ago flashbacks*
So...If this is as effective as the Firefly ones were...Will the House of the Mouse be picking-up the franchise to remake/redo/exploit in twenty years?

The thing is, I've recently started watching the show, and... to be honest as an avid fan of the original (Steve's Spike is always going to be my first voice to our favorite space cowboy), I liked it so far.

So, yeah, crucify me for it but yeah, I liked it. It's far better than most live-action adaptations I've seen. Kept quite a bit of the humor while mixing it up a bit (although, to be honest, the run time feels like it's the problem, not the show itself, the eps are 40 minutes long while the OVA's was barely 30).

I just started it myself and so far it is decent. The look and feel of the original with decent acting. So far my biggest beef is that they rushed out the back story which took a lot of the mystery out of the character development.

So while not as great as the original I would give it 5 to 6 out 10 so far.

Well somebody has to, statistically speaking. No matter how wretched a story is, at least one person out there is going to think it's the greatest one ever told. Personally I never really cared whether the show was good or not; I'm against live action adaptations of animated works period. Doubly so those made by regressive leftist ideologs.

I would give it a 6 or 7, personally.

It may change I have only seen the frist 5 epsodies right now.

I do like how they expanded on Julia. Her actions make me actually care about the character instead her being a set piece mainly for Spikes actions. Which is fine since not every character needs a full back story especially in a show that has limited screen time. But I think that expaned role does add some interesting parts to Syndicate plotlines.

Spike and Faye interaction have been great so far. Along with Spike and Jet me the main three characters definitely feel like the original anime ones.

Also while not perfect I personally at least the producers tried to keep the main spirit of the anime in the live action version. The looks are done well with the fight scenes being the same dance stlye from the anime. The main character's actions and interactions feel like they did in the anime while all the villains and side character's are recognizable.

They may not have nailed everything but so far I am leaning that the hate it outsized for the actually show.
