US Navy Captain Sandy Coward IV had an ironic last name but had an illustrious career that spanned over three decades including flying A-7E Corsair Attack Jets off of the USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War. He also was one of the select test pilots for the YF-17 and prototype F-18 Hornets. He commanded pilot schools, carrier air wings and even worked on the development of the F-22 Raptor before finally being posted at the US Naval Academy where he headed up candidate guidance.
He retired in 1990 from the Navy and passed away from cancer at the age of 79. He was survived by his wife of 41 years, four children and nine grandchildren.
