As the Tin says:
Gate opens up near Fanelia and accidentally stops its sacking by hitting Dilandau's Guymelefs as they wake up from their bivouac.
In Fanelia, Van Fanel is coronated as King of Fanelia with the right to pilot Escaflowne. Since Fanelia's Army is vague along with its territories and population, I will state it to be Fanelia itself at 200,000 folks and situated right on a giant Iron Mine which is the basis of its wealth with its surrounding mountains being rife with iron mines. Its Army is 20,000 folks on paper divided into 3 Armies of 5,000 men each (Tusk, Horn, and Claw) with 5,000 support troops who don't leave the city and its valley. Its big advantage is the approach to its walls, and its 120 Guymelefs not counting Escaflowne. Outside the valley, Fanelia controls an area roughly the size of Rhodes on paper, but actual reality limits its authority to a valley the size of New York City with the City of Fanelia being the size of the Bronx. Outside the valley is steppe land that is largely indefensible and used by caravans and herders owing nominal tribute to Fanelia.
It is thanks to these caravans that King Van Fanel receives early warning of the Invasion and orders out the garrison to hold the pass as a first line of defense.
Guymelefs are tough mechas but can be damaged by the artillery the Empire brings and simply swarmed by their dragons. Big enough ogres can even directly tangle with them. By the time the Empire reaches the pass after reconnaissance flights spot it, Van has it well sealed with emplaced artillery in protective cover.
The Empire's Expeditionary Leader, Armandus Longinus, knows a difficult fight when he sees one, and his recon flights inform him that without this secure valley as a forward base, he can't sustain his campaign.
Thus King Van Fanel faces a choice, he can take the Empire's offer of vassaldom in return for Fanelia being safe or he can slug it out.
