Officials are in fact discussing a fleet of anywhere between 480 to 530 hulls, a 35% increase from the current 355 vessels. This hypothetical expansion will focus less on major surface combatants and aircraft carriers and more on smaller surface vessels, unmanned ships, submarines and an expanded logistical fleet by 2030, which is nice considering the US Navy is already lacking in actual sailors AFAIK.

The simple fact is, until the military starts paying a competitive wage and stops letting itself get used for social experiments on top of defense duties, it is going to remain undermanned.

We can build a bunch of unmanned boats for simple stuff like frontline ASW, and some logistics needs (optionally crewed oiler/logistics ship sounds like a good idea), but the major surface combatants require people onboard.

But if you cannot pay sailors enough to stick around beyond their required stint, no amount of hulls will fix our problems.

The navy has more of an officer cult over the enlisted these days,, so it dies not help.

if they plan to made a lot of small unmanned ships, it could even not cost much more.

Or be ninja about it like we Finns were. We ordered four multirole "corvettes" and then it turns out they're frigates in terms of size and armament.

It could be worst - you could end with submarine carriers. In anime it is possible,so....

Hmm, maybe sub-carriers would make sense now.

After all, the DF-21s aren't meant to hit submerged targets, and hypersonic a would probably not work against those either.

Time for the US to get our own Scinfaxi-class subs, or build a Tuatha De Donan type sub.

Well we now have a new frigate class officially named. Frigates are what we've needed since the OHP's were retired, and they will help make up the numbers.

It's a fine name. Mind you it's a massive downgrade in status from what the previous Constellation was. Still I wouldn't mind us bringing back the old carrier names that aren't in use even if only as frigates

How big unmanned ships could be ? i remember some Clancy book, where Japan used unmanned subs to cripple USA fleet./of course,USA win/.
Could it be buitld for real,or all what we could get would be relativelly small drones ?

Not very big. Basically, the maximum size for unmanned ships is the maximum size at which they can be carried by manned ships for logistics and maintenance reasons.
