BREAKING NEWS: VIDELA KILLED IN EXPLOSIVE GUNFIGHT AT ARMY HEADQUARTERS; GALTIERI, VIOLA, ETC., ARRESTED AND CHARGED FOR INSURRECTION, TREASON
*Thursday, June 17th, 1976: Major breaking news developments coming out of Buenos Aires. The Associated Press reported that government forces loyal to Argentine President Isabel Martinez de Peron, defeated the rebellion just three months after the botched coup attempt began which resulted into a full-scale bloodthirsty civil war.
Sources confirmed that Army Lieutenant General Jorge Videla, the Army Chief of Staff, who led the rebellion against the Peronist government, was killed during an explosive gunfight between rebel troops & government forces. Local television news stations reported that an airstrike fired by loyalists of the Peronist government, mainly the Argentine Air Force, resulted in blowing up the Army Headquarters where Videla & senior loyalists of the coup were staying.
Among those forced to surrender & arrested: Army Lieutenant General Leopoldo Galtieri & Army General Eduardo Viola.
We're told that Argentine President Isabel Martinez de Peron will deliver a nationwide address to the nation from Quinta de Olivos.
