To elaborate on your three points ...Firstly, some oppose real solutions to problems because then you have to find a new cause. Secondly, radiation scary! Who can trust those eggheads not to doom us all! Third, there are vested interests that would be harmed and they have a lot of money and the support of the previous two points.
Not that I agree that this is the way it should be, but because it is that way it's not just an uphill battle but a rampart to be scaled.
