Chonqing, HQ of the Kuomintang, October 8th, 05:00: Dai Li stood at the long table in the operations room to look on the map of Chongqing. Everything was going right so far. It was a situation, in which Chiang and his followers were completely surprised. Mrs Chiang and her brother Soong were...

Threadmarks: Chapter III, Part 15: A President's Gratitude

Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek hadn't slept at all. Around 23:00 it was reported that Mao was dead. Mao's body was to be transported to him. It had been a secret mission, with only a few, who knew about this. So here he was, waiting for the moment of his triumph over the Japanese. Suddenly he...

Berlin, Stadtschloß, 09.05.1912, 10:30: Max Weber and Hugo Preuß were, of course, on time, as the Kaiser wanted to meet them. Only a week ago they had got a first meeting with the Kaiser, in which he had made clear, he wanted to make a new constitution. He gave them the copies of the...

The Schlieffen plan had chances to succeed, IF Moltke the younger didn't sent three corps to East Prussia, where they arrived after Tannenberg. The plan might have worked. OTOH the Germans know now that: 1. It may not work properly. 2. It will give the British a too good excuse to enter the war...

01.05.1912, Eydtkuhnen, East Prussia, Postal Office, 09:09: Eydtkuhnen could have been a village in the deepest province. Indeed it was very near to the border to Lithuania, Russian Empire. One could expect, the most sensational news from this village would be farmer Huber chasing a "Lorbas"*...

The USA had sold arms and especially explosives to the Entente. So they contributed much to the war effort. But in 1917 the Entente was on the merge of collapsing. If Kerensky had made peace in early 1917, I guess several steps would take in another direction. In June I will have less time to post.

The Bismarck could, if barely, enter Wilhelmshaven even without using the so called Raeder lock (which was IIRC not complete in 1941). Also the Kiel Canal was not widened after 1914, so Bismarck could pass the Canal and the locks. @ShadowArxxy : Also the Bismarck was quite good at relative...

Well, the designation Großkampfschiff is describing any major warship, so also battlecruisers. The German term Großlinienschiff meant just great battleship in contrast to the predreadnoughts, which were battleships. These "ships of the line", as Germany still called their battleships, had to be...

29.04.1912, Wilhelmshaven, 09:00: The Kaiser had punctually started his speech to commission the ship. He stood at the quay, right in front of the battleship. The crew stood on the ship in their best new Imperial parade uniforms. "Ladies and Gentlemen, we celebrate today the official...

To the Anglo-German relations. Under Victoria Britain was no foe of Germany. That changed with her son Edward, because of several reasons. And family was only one point. About 1900 the British were in a difficult situation. They had troubles with France (Fashoda crisis 1898) AND Russia (Great...

28.04.1912, Wilhelmshaven, 22:04: The Bismarck finally lay in Wilhelmshaven. The lock personnel managed to get her through the locks without problems. But that had lasted[1] . The preparations for the official commissioning next day were nearly ready. Most seamen and officers were sleeping. But...
