    Tolkien's Ideal of Monarchy

Actually, the best is the Roman Republic: it was highly politically localized (colonia and municipia had more rights than "sovereign" states in the European Union), but had unified foreign policy, and thus combined the best of both worlds: freedom, adaptiveness and internal resillience of...

    Tolkien's Ideal of Monarchy

That is true. But it is also true that humans are not only evil but stupid as well. If you have one person - or even (or perhaps especially) a group of people holding near-absolute power, you will either have them killing millions through evil, or through stupidity. But the ultimate outcome is...

    Tolkien's Ideal of Monarchy

Yet treating it as anything else is nothing but willfull ignorance of the real causes. We may not be able to abolish power, but that does not mean we should ignore its dangers.

Unfortunately, yeah. And powerful institutions attract psychopaths which means that, as Metallica says, "the soothing light at the end of your tunnel / Is just a freight train coming your way".

    Tolkien's Ideal of Monarchy

That argument however applies almost exclusively to modernist states. In other words, a democracy and an absolute monarchy. A traditional or a federal monarchy, especially of a premodern setup, is far superior to either because government as such is much weaker.

    Tolkien's Ideal of Monarchy

That is actually why I became a monarchist. I will be writing more about it in some time, but essentially, by promoting the idea of the government as a legitimate representative of the people, democracy promotes centralization, large government and tyranny. I wrote in more about monarchy here...
