All empirical evidence suggests the opposite. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki are prosperous cities, and the battleships won operation crossroads.

non metals tend to be more vulnerable to mechanical stress. Composites also are a pain in the ass to shape and almost impossible to repair to full strength- patches are a lasting weak point at best. You often are better off just replacing an entire part rather than trying to repair it. Steel...

THe US Navy used to have a fairly large brown water element. Many of our early destroyers had seakeeping issues because they were designed to use on coasts and rivers.

Cost cutting I'm sure. While geared turbines are effective, they are also extremely expensive especially with that rental agreement thing the US has going on. I think a return to turbo-electric might be worth the performance hit just for how it would improve the logistics of maintaining a large...

Because it is naturally springy, steel had a minimum amount of stress it needs to be put under before it begins to build up metal fatigue. Aluminum does not. In something like a warship, if you are using aluminum, it should be bolted onto a steel frame so that you can easily replace it.

Modern warships have stability issues because they have their sensors to be high up to get the best line of sight, but modern sensors are also very heavy, lots of copper in them. Do to the rules of leverage, this is even worse than having guns mounted high up.

Basically they wanted to fit some of bulkiest features of a frigate onto a corvette to perform the duty of a PT boat. It would have been more effective to just buy a hundred patrol boats and some merchant ships or America class LHAs as tenders.

It has I-400 style hangers for drones, a mast mounded gun, and deck mounted missile launchers by the look of things. The feature set just screams that it is attempting to turn a modern frigate into a submarine, so I woudl very much classify it as a submarine cruiser.

ooh, a submarine cruiser, I haven't heard of anyone trying to make one of those for a long while.

Does anyone know a good source on the radio transmitters on WWII era warships? Things like their wattage and effective range?

It is impressive just how catastrophic the damage a modern warship can sustain and still limp back home.

That is prubably the best possible outcome for that sort of malfunction. It exploded outside the ship's magazine after all. Still, the malfunction happening at all ought to leave your crew and munitions supplier humiliated.

It also could turn very well, that removed the need for turret equipment when the whole ship is a floating turret.

In civilian ships, but I haven't heard of it being used on warships since the 20s when matalurgy hadn't quite caught up to making mechanical gearboxes for turbines.

With energy weapons a bit closer than the horison, maybe we will see a return of turbo-electric drive trains. While not quite as efficient as gearboxes, they are much cheaper and easier to repair.

The issue is that modern electronics are more susceptible to getting rattle by the big guns, and there is no point in bringing her back without the big guns. Even with those modular systems, you'd have to redesign the electronics compartments to reduce the vibrations.
