I don't mind the "grimy" effect that much because it makes it look more like camo. But the shine on what's supposed to be fabric... I have no idea how it happened or how to get rid of it. Oh it's just a thin layer of white-ish base color, prettying up the bases is fairly low on my priority...

Baby's first miniature. My Fire Warrior and my friend's Skitarii Ranger. Mine painted with contrast colors + horrendous attempt at layering (seriously guys, first time). My friend painted the Skitarii the regular way (base+shade+dry brushing) and a generous amount of Nuln Oil, but no layering.

I mean, there are other interesting factions, but the Tau are the only ones that make me want to look up different painting schemes, or pour over their lore on wiki etc. Space Marines are cool (I've considered getting Salamanders when I first started asking questions here), but they don't have...

@Battlegrinder Something I don't get... if models are glued together, then how are they customized for matches? Like, if I want to take plasma instead of bolters, I can't just swap the weapons on the models, I have to have marines with plasma rifles in my roster too? Or what the actual model is...

Good advice! Another question, how do I know which SM chapters have access to which units? I assume that chapter unique units simply show up in their codex or supplement, but how would I know which vanilla SM units are illegal for them?

Alrighty, cool answer. So if I were to collect a Space Marines army, just as a... thought experiment... Which chapter should I choose? I know Dark Angels are the strongest in the current meta, but that probably makes them a nerf magnet in the next update, right? Any good reasons to collect one...

So... with the maybe 2 WH40K players in my whole country, I'm not likely to pick up the hobby, despite reading some lore and generally liking the idea of this game... But just for fun, how would you rank all the armies by their newbie friendliness?

I wonder what army are you collecting, for the people who are actually playing the physical tabletop game (I'm not one of them). I bet various kinds of Space Marine or Chaos are going to be overrepresented...
