Honestly if the USAF wants axe the A-10 earlier than originally plannedgiving them to Ukraine might a valid idea. Along with F-16s. I'd say F-15s but you'll pry strike eagle from the USAF out of their cold dead hands and the C/Ds are super worn out and in dire need of either replacement or...
True but even so you can only fly a bird for so long and the A-10s haven’t been given the near ship of thesus level of care the B-52 has and it been out of production for a good long while to boot as previously mentioned
honestly I can see why the USAF wants to axe the A-10 given the fearsome losses seen in the SU-25 in the last couple wars said bird was involved in. that and the damm thing has been out of production for so long spares or any serious upgrades will be hard. also the fact that they very very much...
With at least 5 other prototypes in varying stages of construction. Albeit I suspect much like was the case with the B-2 one of those will be put through destructive tests on the ground to see what the frame can truly handle. BTW that's how the national museum of the airforce has a b-2 on...
hey could be worse the plant will be building something useful. actually just looked it up and they're going to be build rockets that i kid you not will be entirely made out of 3-D printed material, albeit the site still needs to be retooled first
alas the C-17 is out of production and has been since 7 years ago and boeing sold off the long beach plant where it made them 4 years ago albeit the C-17 tooling is in storage. On the positive side of things the site is in useful service in building and assembling rockets with a company called...
probably would be a 777. would be a 747 but yeah Boeing is all but done making those. also there's been a 767 AWACs variant as well. plus the tanker variant
alas more likely to see someone convert a airliner frame to be akin to the B-52 than a X equivalent because its going to be a lot more cost effective to do so
Probably will get something akin to a stealth F-111 or Strike Eagle equivalent the next thing on the USAFs wishlist to develop and probably a wild weasel variant for said design albeit the odds of that actually being ya know developed and fielded are low. As for non stealth strike birds...the EX...
To be blunt given what we've seen in Ukraine modern Air Defenses aren't exactly nice to non stealthy aircraft if well operated and thus more stealth aircraft vs non stealth aircraft especially for active frontline Squadrons and not national guard units is a good idea
And getting a carrier to handle significantly bigger than 50 tons basically means it needs to be at least a couple hundred feet longer and probably decently wider...which uhhh yeah that would be fun to have the USN get the drydocks for
to be fair in theory the carriers are designed to handle aircraft of up to 50 tons in their elevators, catapults, and arrestor system and crash barriers and have been since forrestal . of course they've never built something quite that big yet
The idea of a swing wing bird was a good one for its time but not really suited for the modern era given how maintenance heavy it is and how it prevents the addition of a lot of hardpoints
The Super Hornet or for that matter the Super Tomcat would have been fine....if so many compromises hadn't been required to make them look like their namesakes when they should be have been blank sheet designs. Even still the Super Hornet is a good bird
You'd need a lot more aircraft than what Congress would be willing to pay for to make that practical without massively effecting the power and size of each airwing
Honestly probably would have been a blank sheet design than a F-22 derivative navalizing stuff is way harder than the other way around and in the early 90s the USN still was weary of stealth aircraft due to the A-12 Fiasco
