At least it's better than the "Buenos Aires was an inside job" theory, which starts to look plausible right until you realise that FTL travel clearly exists in this universe.

Yeah, it's pretty good as a brainless action movie. It's just that when it tries to be more than that it falls apart.

I still can't believe it. Verhoeven had a scene that was PERFECTLY cut out for his intentions - portraying the TF in a more negative light (having them do to an alien city what happened to Buenos Aires) and implying that the Bugs being mindlessly evil was just Govt. propaganda (if they can form...

Major violation of show, don't tell. Heh. It also adds another wrinkle into the Sky Marshal promotion track ...

And what's really hilarious is how Verhoeven says "it's only fucking good for killing bugs"! This society is meant to be dystopic? Ironically Heinlein is a bit more weird about this, with his 100% female space navy ...

I mean, if Verhoeven wanted to actually paint the TF in a darker light he could have replaced that inane detour with the flying bugs with the attack on the Skinnies, which has them attacking an alien city and casually lobbing nukes at factory districts in what's explicitly described as a "terror...

Apparently some of them also argue that the film is IU propaganda by the TF ... despite IU propaganda/news being clearly distinguished from "reality".

I mean, the only bone the "it's a genius satire" guys have to work with is the fan theory that the meteorite strike the bugs caused was actually done by the TF ... which is hinted at nowhere in the film.

I mean, the arachnids are the real fascists of the SST movie, as their hivemind seeks to destroy humanity because our individuality disgusts it. I mean, if he wanted to do that Verhoeven could have simply re-introduced the Skinnies from the novel as allies of the bugs. Instead, fans of the...

Which is especially implausible since the book starts in a time of relative peace. I think Heinlein was just too wedded to his idea that in the TF military everybody fights to really take into account the practicalities of the isssue.

TBF the SST movie does have good jabs at half-cocked military adventurism. But its "deeper political themes" are pure nonsense.

Verhoeven notably said in an interview that the TF is "only fucking good for killing bugs". So he seems to think that he presented the TF as worse than he presented it as. Which is telling given that in the DVD commentary he says that the spread of American culture worldwide is as bad as the...

The film doesn't have any fascist substance either. No regimentation of society as a whole, no secret police, no economic failure and deprivation, and the closest thing the TF has to a Glorious Leader resigns in public disgrace right after Klendathu. What the movie's TF really represents is...
