Windows XP will still work, but over time if you try to install it on a newer machine you'll find it hard to get the right drivers. And you'll find that while today lots of software will run on XP, newer stuff will not - they will assume that "nobody" still uses it.

They will stop making new versions of it. No more upgrades, bugfixes, patches, etc. What you've got is what you've got. And over time that will work with less and less. New versions of browsers, new designs of webpages...
