    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Just to say I won't be posting on this site again. Stating it here as its probably where I've been most active. A pity as a very interesting TL, even if dark days look to be coming.

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Well some foreboding hints for the future. China is in for interesting times although its possible that Ma Hui could overthrow the corrupt current regime and discredited dynasty quickly. However suspect there will be some issues with him being a 'barbarian' and the former success of the...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Either that or he might move more openly against them? However I suspect Leo would realise that would be highly dangerous with two powerful potential enemies in the east as well as the important role of the Stilichians in defending N Africa against Islam. Suspect you will be right and he will...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Its a serious problem for the Khazars. The empire is a very dangerous and hostile neighbour but its currently too big and powerful to even hope to defeat even in defence of their own territories. Coupled with it spreading onto the eastern steppe and now controlling a blocking position on the...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Well the Khazar's seem to be falling into the emperor's trap but has he poked the Africans too much that he could see civil war in the west? Also what will the forces of Islam do? Continue attacking neighbours in India and related areas or decide at some point that the Romans are embroiled...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

You would be lucky to know both those two with their different regions but the classical world generally respected differing religious beliefs and deities. The Romans incorporated local gods and frequently sought to equal them to their own pantheon but didn't totally suppress them and with many...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Ultimately Simon-Sartäc's bid will fail as I can't see Judaism as an Abrahmic faith ever accepting equality with other religions. Its taken until the late 20thC in the modern world and massive amounts of death and destruction to achieve such ideas from elements of Christianity and Judaism and...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Well the Empire of the Later Han are starting on their way to be the empire of the Late Han. It could take a while depending on which group of Turkic people end up emerging as the new great power of the eastern steppes and how rapid the decline is but the Turks that the Han earlier brutally...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Well been away for a while as I went down with Covid. :( Better now and trying to catch up with various TLs.

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

It is however a long way from actual Roman territory, which is pushed back to about the Antioch area and for political/religious reasons the primary target of any Roman offensive is likely to be Palestine - along with possibly Egypt for economic, strategic and again religious reasons. Also...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Now your just being stupid. I did include conquered i.e. surrendered in my list but here numbers are likely to be much lower because it involved giving up their faith and customs for bitterly hostile ones.

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Different people with possibly a common origin and definitely the same name but the bulk of the ones about in TTL have just been slaughtered/enslaved/conquered.

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Many other cases of course. We're just had the Saxon's in TTL. That's the problem with totalitarian belief systems. :(

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

I see your point but the fact was that they did accept alliances which at least in theory could be considered between equals. It was simply a case of balance of power and playing potential opponents against each other. Here the universal state seems to be very close to openly denying any...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

I agree but that's not really my point. Its because its a strong, unified state and church it is likely to be far more aggressive towards alternatives as there's no real basis for truces and temporary alliances with 'others' - or at least those others would be more aware its a dangerous game...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Interesting development. I do think that the empire faces the problem, as I suggested before that its position itself to be in continued conflict - even if broken by occasional truces - with all neighbours. A universal empire and faith can't really accept any alternative - hence the hostility...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

I agree that by this time the Saxons had a pretty much hopeless position, although the sheer amount of resistance that they showed to the conquest demonstrates that they were still a substantial force in their own lands. However its a war that the empire could have avoided if it had been less...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Well its a pity the Saxon's went down in such a brutal way, although virtually inevitable given the nature of their foes and the Danes are right to start bolstering their border. Its cost the empire however as the conquest of Saxony diverted forces that could have been used to stem the Khazars...

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Well one good thing is that Aloysius or possibly Leo isn't as brutal as Charlemagne was in his conquest of the Saxon's but I fear that such tolerance won't last long, especially since its technically illegal under the law of the empire. Their having more difficult with their real enemies in...

Thanks for clarifying. As I said to shangrila I've obviously misread something somewhere or mixed up characters seriously.
