Apparently Gearbox's current owner and Master, Embracer, is rumored to wanting to salvage its $2 billion deal after Volition was shut down by selling off Gearbox Entertainment as opposed to shutting it down as well.
Gearbox Entertainment was one of many game studios Embracer gobbled up back in 2021 and cost $1.3 billion to purchase at the time.
Having made a name for itself with the well received Half Life: Opposing Force Gearbox Entertainment is also the developer of the very rightly popular Borderlands series of games as well as (personally speaking) the really good arena shooter Battleborn which sadly didn't achieve commercial success and was shut down. Overwatch just totally eclipsed it having been released around the same time.
They also developed the World War Two tactical shooter sim Brothers in Arms (also a decent game IIRC) and own the Duke Nukem IP having released the famous once vaporware title Duke Nukem Forever after aboot a few decades of development hell to mixed reviews. Other franchises they owned or developed include Homeworld which I'm sure there are fans of here.
Gearbox rumored to be up for sale as Embracer continues to try to bounce back from a failed $2B deal
The report of a possible sale of the Borderlands studio comes less than two weeks after the closure of Saints Row developer Volition.
