In November of 2019 thieves forced their way into Dresdens Green Vault museum and stole three 18th century sets of jewelry in what was purportedly biggest art heist in modern history. The stolen valuables were worth an estimated 1.19 billion Euros.
In a recent sweep of a set of apartment blocks by over 1600 police personnel, three of these alleged thieves were arrested in relation to this heist.
The valuables (included a jewel encrusted sword) belonged to Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and survived World War Two (including the infamous bpmbing of Dresden) only to be taken by the Soviets after the war. They were returned to Germany in 1958 however.
