I have some questions with this list... :p

As for the particulars it was apparently determined by a poll of players/gamers or something.

BAFTA said:
BAFTA has revealed the results of its landmark players' poll to establish the Most Iconic Video Games Character of All Time. Launched to celebrate the 20th BAFTA Games Awards on Thursday 11 April, the poll was engaged with by over 4,000 players from all over the world.

  1. Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
First introduced to the world in 1996 in Tomb Raider for the Sega Saturn, Lara Croft has appeared in over 15 games, three films, multiple novelisations and comic book adaptations, and an upcoming Netflix animated series.
  2. Mario, Super Mario
One of the most senior characters on this list, Mario was created in 1981 – not as the star of his own series, but as a player character in the first instalment in the Donkey Kong series. From humble beginnings, he has appeared in over 200 video games, two films, and numerous other multimedia adaptations.
  3. Agent 47, Hitman
A genetically-enhanced clone with a penchant for murder, Agent 47 made his video game debut in 2000's Hitman: Codename 47. Since then, he's killed his way across screens both big and small, appearing in over ten games, two novelisations, and two live-action film adaptations.
  4. Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic
Sonic the Hedgehog sprinted his way into the hearts and minds of fans worldwide in 1991 as the star of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. He has appeared in over 100 video games as both a main character and supporting cast, as well as starring in several TV shows and two films, with a third slated for release in late 2024.
  5. Sackboy, LittleBigPlanet
One of the most customisable characters on this list, Sackboy made his video game debut in 2008 as the star of Sony's LittleBigPlanet to instant critical acclaim. He's since starred in all six LittleBigPlanet mainline games, as well as making an appearance in numerous other game franchises as everything from a playable character to an adorable easter egg.
  6. Pac-Man, Pac-Man
This little yellow hockey puck has appeared in over 50 games and has made appearances in innumerable other trans-media properties.
  7. Link, The Legend of Zelda
The silent protagonist of the Legend of Zelda franchise, Link has appeared in 20 games in the series, as well as starring in his own animated series and multiple comic book and manga adaptations.
  8. Master Chief, HALO
Full name Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, this Spartan super-soldier appears in six games in the HALO franchise. He appears as the main character in three of the 19 HALO novels, as well as in the 2012 film Halo 4: Forward Until Dawn and the 2022 HALO television series.
  9. Kratos, God of War
From murder-hungry Spartan warrior to protective parent, Kratos has appeared in eight games in the God of War franchise. He's also made appearances in two comic series, three novels, and in several games outside the God of War franchise.
  10. Shadowheart, Baldur's Gate 3
One of the youngest characters on this list in terms of release date, Shadowheart charmed her way into the hearts of players worldwide with the release of 2023's Baldur's Gate 3.
  11. Arthur Morgan, Red Dead Redemption 2
The protagonist of 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan is one of the few characters on this list to only appear in a single game.
  12. Pikachu, Pokémon
The only Pokémon to appear on this list, Pikachu has appeared in over 100 properties across screens both big and small, as well as making appearances in multiple comic books and manga.
  13. Steve, Minecraft
The iconic player character from 2011's Minecraft (the best-selling video game of all time as of 2024), Steve has also made appearances in four other games including the Minecraft spinoff Minecraft Dungeons.
  14. Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid
Debuting in 1987's Metal Gear, Solid Snake (real name David) is a stealthy super-spy who's appeared in over ten games in the Metal Gear franchise, as well as in multiple novelisations of the game series.
  15. Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot
Introduced to the world in 1996's Crash Bandicoot, this genetically enhanced marsupial has appeared in 20+ video games throughout his lifespan.
  16. Cloud Strife, Final Fantasy VII
A mercenary and man of few words, Cloud Strife has made 30+ appearances in both video games and wider media properties since his video game debut as the protagonist of 1997's Final Fantasy VII.
  17. Astarion, Baldur's Gate 3
Much like his fellow party member Shadowheart, Astarion's rogueish charms have made him a fan favourite since his appearance in 2023's Baldur's Gate 3.
  18. Kazuma Kiryu, Yakuza
A gruff former Yakuza mobster, Kazuma Kiryu has appeared in ten games in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise, as well as starring in multiple film adaptations and a stage play of the franchise.
  19. Ellie Williams, The Last of Us
Best-known as the star of 2013's The Last of Us, Ellie Williams actually did not make her first appearance in the game. The world's first introduction to the bad-mouthed teenager was in The Last of Us: American Dreams, a four-issue comic book series that served as a prequel to the game. She's since starred in sequels and DLC for the The Last of Us franchise, as well as the 2023 TV adaptation of the game.
  20. Nathan Drake, Uncharted
The gentleman explorer with a penchant for violence, Nathan Drake stars in six games in the Uncharted franchise, as well as multiple comic book series and a live-action film adaptation.

Now... when creating a list as expansive as this, obviously it won't please anyone but at the very least, I would assume that the characters in question should at least be recognizable enough in gaming circles, if not culture in general, to be known by people who've never played the games in question. This is mostly directed towards Kazuma Kiryu of the Yakuza series. Like I've heard of the game and the praise it received and feel like I recognize the name but if you asked me who Kazuma Kiryu was I'd be like... Strider has a relative or something?

The mention of two Baldurs Gate 3 characters is just a temporal or time bias or whatever. And time bias are somewhat excusable, but to this extent its a bit much to take seriously.

Lara Croft definitely had some impact in video games, but there's no way she's number one. It almost seems obvious that Mario would be Number One and probably Sonic number two. And Link perhaps number three. Pac-Man obviously is a big deal but... he's not... much... of a character IMHO. So while he could go up there, perhaps I have my own bias keeping him down. Kratos, Master Chief, Pikachu, Cloud Strife, Solid Snake I could totally see up there somewhere.

Crash Bandicoot, Nathan Drake and either Joel or Ellie from The Last of Us perhaps. Agent 47 seems pretty iffy to be honest. He's iconic to me but I dunno for all of video gamedom. Certainly not #2 though. Sackboy and Steve, I mean I guess should be up there. Steve at the very least I suppose since I know Minecraft is yuge but I'm just not sure how much of a character he is, despite how obviously iconic he is... as a character from that game and the list does say... iconic... nothing about substance. :p

Another bias for me, but I think Gordon Freeman and perhaps even moreso the DoomGuy/Slayer/Marine would make it to the list since it apparently covers console and computer games. If it's being limited to one character per franchise... there's Ratchet from Ratchet & Clank, Ezio from Assassins Creed, Kirby, Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy maybe from the RE games, and a plethora of fighting game characters like Chun Li or Scorpion or something.

I'm sure that's more then twenty lol, I'll see if I can make a list later though.

As is, I liked that list by Newegg that came out a few years ago on the top sixteen computers games of all time that fomented some discussion (and only made me look mildly retarded in offering it moderate praise for the effort in said discussion).

This list is obviously a ridiculous failure, without that most iconic character....

But seriously, some things/placings on that list are pretty absurd. Characters that are truly iconic tend to be pretty timeless by definition. Before even opening this thread, my first thought upon seeing the title was "gotta be Mario-- who else?" Literally the only credible contender besides Mario would be Pac-Man...

I'm not a big gamer, and I have a number of friends who aren't, either. So since we were meeting up today, this provided a great opportunity to figure out which characters we all know, despite not being very much into video games at all. The list ended up looking a bit like this:

1. Mario

2. Pac-Man

3. Sonic

4. Donkey Kong

5. Pikachu

6. Link

7. Luigi, Yoshi, Kirby, Bowser, Princess Peach (a bunch of very near-universally known Nintendo characters)

8. Lara Croft

9. Master Chief

10. Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa, Aerith (the characters from FF7 that everybody knows, by name, regardless of whether they've ever even played it)

11. Geralt of Rivia

12. Ezio (everybody recognised the guy from those Assassin games, but not everybody knew his name)

13. "the Doom guy" (everybody knows what he's from, but he's kind of a cypher... does he even have a name or backstory?)

14. Samus

15. Solid Snake

16. Commander Shepard, Garrus, Miranda, Liara (the characters from Mass Effect that even people who never played it can recognise, and usually know by name)

17. Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield (none of us have played these games, and we still tend to know about these characters)

18. Crash Bandicoot

19. Kratos

20. Agent 47

21. Gordon Freeman (used to be way more well-known; is he still going to be iconic in 20 years if there's never a new game released...?)

22. Earthworm Jim (another iconic character that I think is fading into greater obscurity)

23. Commander Keen (same; already completely unknown to the younger generation)

24. Rayman (also getting forgotten, I think)

25. Kane (because you can't kill the Messiah... even if this game series is kind of dead now)

26. Nathan Drake

27. Max Payne (everybody knows the character, but would you be able to pick him out of a line-up...?)

28. Revan, Kreia (these are the two KotOR characters that get talked about most often, and those games remain widely known, even outside the SW fandom)

29. Ellie, Joel (super well-known now, sure, but what about 20 years from now?)

30. ...we had a bit of a debate about this, since none of us know anything about Ratchet and Clank, but these characters are probably well-known, but we mostly agreed that GLaDOS from the Portal games is iconic, even though that's probably a less well-known character overall.

This is obviously by no means a useful sample group, but I think that we end up with a list that's more credible than the BAFTA one. We obviously cheated by having some places occupied by groups of characters. There's also the issue of stuff we just don't know. What about those Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age games? Those are famous, and must surely have characters! But fucked if you ask me to name any... Same with that Baldur's Gate thing, or that recent Elden Ring craze. I know those games exist, but all of this blends together for me, and I know nothing about the characters. There's also huge things like Street Fighter (all I know comes from the narmy film!) and Mortal Kombat (of which I know nothing at all). So the limits of my own experience, and that of my friend group, makes the above list vulnerable to the risk of "unknown unknowns".

But we're pretty confident about our top 10, anyway.
