Developing story...

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Democratic Party said Monday night that results from the state’s first-in-the-nation caucus were delayed due to “quality checks” and new reporting rules.

“The integrity of the results is paramount,” party spokesperson Mandy McClure said. “We have experienced a delay in the results due to quality checks and the fact that the IDP is reporting out three data sets for the first time.”

The statement came as Iowa voters packed caucus sites across the state as Democrats balanced a strong preference for fundamental change with an overwhelming desire to defeat President Donald Trump in the opening contest of the 2020 presidential primary season.

State party officials were counting votes amid reports of strong turnout in some precincts, with at least four leading candidates battling for the chance to take on Trump in November. Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses have been expected to provide some clarity for what has been a muddled nomination fight for much of the last year.

Monday night’s vote totals were slow to be counted, and the reason was unclear. Des Moines County Democratic Chair Tom Courtney blamed technology issues in his county, relaying precinct reports that the app created for caucus organizers to report results was “a mess.”

As a result, Courtney said precinct leaders were phoning in results to the state party headquarters, which was too busy to answer their calls in some cases.

From Elena Schneider via 538:

On those technical difficulties...

"We are on paper in many cases," not the app, as was planned, said one Iowa Democrat. "The whole system largely broke."

MORE: Polk County precinct chairs are being advised to take pictures of the results and text them over to the Polk County executive director, who is driving them to the HQ, according to a Democratic operative familiar with the situation

I'll just put on my tinfoil hat real quick.

Ahem...

OMG THIS IS THEM MESSING WITH THE RESULTS AND LITERALLY TRYING TO TAKE IT FROM BERNIE!!!

Takes off hat.

Probably not but depending on what the results end up at this could be hysterical. The conspiracy theories write themselves.

The way things have been going you could probably start a business selling those...

It gets better -- nobody knows who made the app or who owns it, and back in January the WSJ ran a piece on it describing how it had no security.

WHAT???????????????????????

Tyanna, please tell us you're pulling our collective legs....the DNC could not be this stupid. Oh wait...

Unless they intentionally did this to have a cover story, however moronic so that they really could rig it. BigKing321, please pass me one of those tinfoil hats would you...?

@Tiamat here is a link to the WSJ article.

Intro header:

Democrats will record the votes from the Iowa presidential caucuses in just over a week using a smartphone app, a procedure that has stirred questions about security.

Party leaders said that the mobile app would make it easier and faster to report results from some 1,700 caucus sites. But critics expressed concern about the reliability of the app amid warnings that cyber adversaries could seek to disrupt the 2020 elections.

Holy shit....get ready for the riots folks....

Tyanna, thanks...but all the same I have to blame you and will have to sue you (See? I'm half Asian and thus a victim!) for me slamming my head on my desk at the sheer utter stupidity being displayed by the Dems. Dear God...

For those who want to follow the chaos along, here's a livestream bulletin from Fox News:

Can it not be overemphasized just how comical this all is right on the heels of the Democrat's Wile E. Coyote-style impeachment attempt on Trump? Next thing they'll say the app was designed by the ACME corporation.

. . .

Given the polling leading into Iowa it seemed that Sanders actually had a good shot at winning it.

This fiasco, especially if Sanders ends up not winning, is going to royally piss off the Sanders supporters.

In a statement, the Iowa Democratic Party said it found "inconsistencies in the reporting of three sets of results" and would take more time to verify the results and conduct "quality checks." Precinct chairs are calling the party hotline to report their results.

"This is simply a reporting issue, the app did not go down and this is not a hack or an intrusion. The underlying data and paper trail is sound and will simply take time to further report the results," the statement read.”

The level of lies in their official statement is amazing. How do three numbers develop “inconsistencies” inside of a computer program?

Woopsie, you mean the same ones who said they were gonna burn down Des Moines if the "Bern" doesn't get elected...?

I can only wonder how the SB forums is reacting to all this...

EDIT: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand....the candidates campaign staffers are all falling over each other trying to position themselves as the winner of the caucus. It's almost like something right out of the movie The Death of Stalin....minus the body count (so far).

And I thought tossing that last big poll going into things was a cock-up (that inspired conspiracy theories). Now this? The conspiracies will be abounding, and 'quality control' is about the worst choice of words that could be used in that respect to describe 'everything's on fire, oh god, oh god'.

Tom Perez slash-whoever at the DNC is responsible for this is an incompetent and should be pilloried for this cluster of trucks colliding together. I understand the urge to 'go digital' and time-saving, but to not have a reliable backup or a secondary 'original' system for the first use of a novel system based on an APP? What manner of amateur-hour hackery is that?

I actually feel kind've sorry for the volunteers and candidate-junkies and organizers in Iowa who get this flop instead of a night of watching results followed by partying or morose drinking as appropriate for the performance of 'their guy'.

To crib my sister (and no doubt others), watery tarts distributing swords as a method of choosing leadership isn't looking so bad by comparison at the moment. :p

I’m almost sure if Sanders doesn’t win there will be a large outcry, his supporters will say the whole screw up was a ploy to deny him the victory with the confusion and failure of the app used as plausible cover.

And honestly? The DNC won’t be able to definitely prove otherwise. Unless Sanders wins that is.

They might as well let him win. It's not as if any of the others would have any better chance against Trump.

How on Earth you mess up something that has been going on for two centuries?
