Good ideas, but since people hold horses in mines, dwarws should do the same. And,if they made rails, they could transport a lot using horses to pull them. Which,of course, would work only underground, rails would be targeted elsywhere. Weapons - since ancient greeks made kind of crossbow, dwarws would...

That is my problem with elves in war - they either must be one- elf - army/or ,at least,company/ or they would be wiped out in less then 1000 years, even if they win every battle. That is also problem with all settling except LOTR./there are logical reasons why elves there do not need fight much...

gave then sling, and they would be mobile ballista in all terrains.with good armour, ballista impossible to hurt but anything that other ballista.I remember some fiction in which Robb win using giants with bows and slings - Lannister ballista could not hit them, becouse giants were mobile,and...

Then ogres instead.Or something like Sothorys people from SoIaF.Gave them plate and dyscypline, and they would defeat anybody in any terrain.

Only giants without good armour.Gave them 1cm plate, and they could forget about pikes, arrows, bolts, swords and maces.

If we have enough trolls/giants,then any conventional elite infrantry would be obsolate - they would die just quickly like average dudes. Which probably mean, that elite infrantry would be made only from trolls/giants/ogres whatever, and thanks to heavy armour immune to any range attacks except...

I think about using magic for ranging and communication. Some mages who could control birds would find always both enemy and your troops, and you could always choose time and place of battle. And potions. If they are cheap enough, you could turn your soldiers into supermans for duration of battle.

Excellent ideas. Now,about logistic: 1.Since it is fantasy,we could build light rails for wagons pulled by horses, which could tow on them 10 times more then on road. 2.If we add magic,we could have magical powered trains, which mean even more. 3.If we add patatoes, then logistic would be much...

So,it would be 1% - unless i would lead nomad people, like mongols, where every adult was soldier,or german/gallic/slavic like tribe where all adults was warriors, too. Another possibility - rich city-state which could hire as many mercaneries as they need.

My mistake, themata. Indeed,in two battles where scythers fought/Racławice and Szczekociny/ they were shadowed by regular units which look for them to not escape. But - they fought well,in Racławice battle their charge break russians and captured 12 guns. During Szczekocin battle where we lost...

So,Tagmata system for semi-proffesionals,levies for rest. Some elite royal guard, and mercaneries - but only trusted. That would be most practical kind of army.Gentry levies - polish was good till at least 1514,and border one on tatar frontier remain good as long as tatar keep coming - but till...

If i remember correctly, water mills was used to really mass-produce plate after 1405.That is why during war polish with Teutonic order in 1410 maybe 10-15% of combatants have full plate, when in 1456 practically all./on both sides/

Dragons still need food.Which means, that only King and most powerfull lords could use them.Unless we have some tribe living on seashore which dragons hunt whales, then they could have many dragons.

soft armour made from cotton or other materials would work very well.I read once fragments of muslim chronicle, when author wrote about crusade infrantry with at least 10 arrows sticking from each - and they were still not hurt, only pissed.

    Building a Fantasy Army

Hmmm...you are right. So,border guard like you said and levies: 1.heavy calvary from nobles - checked by king instructors,if they do not have proper armour and horses they lost part of privilages. 2.medium calvary - the same, and nomads living in my country. 3.light calvary - nomads. Infrantry...

    Building a Fantasy Army

Well, levies for some time was efficient,so i would made my army from them,King Guards/proffesionals/,Border guards/also professinals/ and hire small number of mercaneries to help train levies.
