The gas guzzler rep especially when idling was in large part due it taking way way too long to give the M-1 a proper auxiliary power unit that wasn't removed for some reason or another. Mostly due to needing the space for other kit Also they don't take that much longer than a normal tank to...

I mean the MSHORAD can carry Hellfires(and presumably use them in the anti ground role)and sidewinders and either a 50 cal or a 30mm autocannon not just stingers like the avenger. But yeah the army is working on a proper Avenger/ADATS replacement with MSHORAD being a interim replacement that...

honestly if you want to add drones or missiles to a tank bolting their launchers to the side of the turret ala the TOW launcher of the bradley probably makes a lot more sense than using the gun for the task

The pilot was clearly so astonished by the destruction that the tank was doing that they crashed

good news the US Army's primary armor collection is now entirely indoors in a climate controlled environment. Bad news unlike many other national collections outside of select days its not open to the general public

Mostly due to most bridges not being designed to handle such weights and the fact that the heavier a tank is the more fuel and maintenance it needs and the more wear and tear it suffers which drives up the cost per mile moved under it's own power

Anyone getting out alive depends entirely on whether or not the ammo cooked off before anyone could bail out and run a decent distance away

The 76mm Oto Melera gun already had a proximity fuse for its shells indeed 3" shells having such fuses was a thing in 1945. The big thing about the 40mm Bofors proximity fuse shells was that for the time they where the absolutely smallest shells that had proximity fuses. Also in the meantime IRL...

Of course a sensor and fire control upgrade would be needed but that would pretty much guaranteed if the design was revived and brought into service. They'd also probably wack some light AA missile tubes on the side of the turret while they where at it

Nowadays it would be pretty handy against most drones and assume you gave it the right ammo it could in theory do anti missile work at

As related to SPAAGs as I recall the Italians exprmented with a 76mm SPAAG the <Otomatic - Wikipedia> which while promising still never got any sales albeit the Cold War ending played a large part in that

As I recall the army really does want to totally replace the M113. As for the Bradley the army also wants to replace it at least somewhat. Ironically their replacement will probably be a Bradley that's stripped the turret out in exchange for more armor

The French do it that way though so they can have their 4th crewmember be in close proximity to their tank. Mind you I suspect we'd need a new tracked APC to make it work. Still I suspect that until the Army decides that tank rounds are too big to quickly hand loaded or they want the advantages...

I suspect that once we move on from 120mm guns to something larger than we will either have to use an autoloader or two piece ammunition. Plus autoloaders are way more reliable than they used to be. Mind you I suspect we'd have to get help because outside of a few prototypes for the Abrams and...

True a bigger turret seems like the easiest solution to any upgrade in firepower that's needed. As for more armor I suspect that about half the potential weight savings will go into this with the rest being used to make a lighter tank that's easier to use tactically, strategically, and...

If nothing else I suspect that the next tank design be it an Abrams variant or a new design will get a new turret to accommodate a bigger gun if need be. At the bare minimum I suspect an upgrade to the 120mm L/55 will be done

Mind you with the advantage of an entirely new hull I expect advances in material science will make it significantly lighter(ie at least 5 tons) than the Abrams. After all at its core the Abrams was designed in the 70s and we've come a long way since then

Yep, to be fair pretty much everyone is working on new tank designs these days. Well everyone but the UK and the Israelis. To be fair the Merkava IV is probably the most modern western tank design currently in production what with it being pretty much a totally 21st century design. The US is...
