If I may play the devil's advocate here; that's how it's supposed to work. In general, liberals want to change how things are, while conservatives want to keep things as they are. Any compromise between the two groups is going to leave both unhappy.

I'm further left than you are, and I agree that removing Confederate monuments and such is horrible; irredeemably so. There is nothing racist about wanting to preserve monuments to our history, regardless of what you think they represent.
