Shortly before Pearl Harbour, a Japanese agent who was more impressed with himself than any of his superiors was sent to Pearl Harbour to recon the naval base shortly before the attack. This agent looked on the waiting American ships and exceeded his mandate by noting, in a signal to his superiors, that they were in the perfect position for an attack. He knew nothing about Yamamoto’s plan – the Combined Fleet was only a couple or so of days away and might not be recallable - he just looked at the ships and presumed to offer his superiors some advice. The US noted him as a prospective spy, but didn’t do anything until after the attack.
What if his telegram to his superiors had been noted and the US had taken the threat seriously?
