The challenge is to have Cleveland lose the 1888 election and get renominated in 1892 like OTL, but for him to fail in his comeback attempt, this time losing both the electoral vote and the popular vote.
And instead of being at the hands of Benjamin Harrison, it is at the hands of GOP nominee who is a strict gold standard guy, opposed to free silver.
I want to set up a situation where the GOP takes the hit for the 1893 panic, but Bourbon hard money control of the Dems is also smashed, so that the 1896 election is Bryan, or another western populist free silverite’s, to lose.
