One of my favorite kinds of threads on SB was setting creation threads. A collaborative effort where the participants take turns adding elements to the setting, making sure not to contradict previous plot elements. Maybe we have enough posters here to do it here too. Let's find out.
So this will be an urban fantasy setting, one where the supernatural exists secretly and the majority of humans are unaware of these creatures. We've seen plenty of settings like this before, like World of Darkness.
Here is the twist. Every kind of creature of magic in this setting must be taken from some pre-established fictional setting that isn't urban fantasy. What do I mean by this? Here is one example: the Sith and the Jedi conduct a secret war over which side of the Force will come to dominate humanity, they use their mind control powers to keep their presence a secret and cover up the sword and Force battles against each other. Another example: among some of the most powerful men in society wear special magical rings which allow them to rise to the highest levels of society - but there is another ring that controls all the others and will allow the Dark Lord Sauron to command them when he rises to power.
So, obviously, we don't need to stick too closely to the canon of these settings - but the basic ideas should form our inspiration. Once some ideas have been introduced, we can work on how the various groups interact with each other and with the modern seemingly normal world.
